Dictation - 5 [Video]

Hello

[Rosen's face appears weary and thin as he blinks into the camera, the bags beneath his eyes deep and he does not make his usual attempt to put on an awkward smile. He doesn't have the energy or the wherewithal to pretend so he just looks tired.] 

When he left, Sans asked me to--

[He draws his lower lip beneath his front teeth and eases back heavily into the park bench where he sits before choosing a different course to take]

--Nevermind.

[That's not important]

Does anyone know where I can get carving knives, wood... [His voice trails in thought] I also need paint, also small bits of scrap metal and screws...  I suppose what I'm getting at is essentially a tool kit and small craft materials. If anyone knows where I can get them, I'd appreciate it.

I got some carving knives I've been using, and a ton of scrap wood and screws I've picked up from around town. Can't help you with the paint and metal, though. You thinking of building something? It's not a duck, is it? That's already my thing. I have the market cornered on wood ducks.

Ah, no. Its not a duck, so you have no need to worry about that.

[He eases forward, resting his elbows on the tops of his thighs]

I'd appreciate anything you can spare.

Yeah? You gonna tell me what it is, or should I keep guessing? I've got the goods. I can hold them ransom.

[He holds up a carving knife and wiggles it enticingly.]

Name's Magnus Burnsides. You can borrow the knives, not keep, by the way. The rest that I give you is yours to do whatever.

Oh, sorry, its not a secret, I'm just not, um- [His voice trails] Not altogether at the moment. I wanted to make some toys to keep at the clinic. For any children who show up here.

[He chuckles tiredly]

I'm Lee Rosen, one of the doctors here. And I am grateful for your offer.

That's fair. It feels like everyone's had one fucked up month. Rinse, repeat for the next one, right?

[Medical doctor, right? Not like Alphys. 'Cause he's mentioning the clinic, it makes sense.

On the one hand, he's glad they have the clinic. On the other, he's stubborn enough not to go there until he's exhausted all other choices. Either way, he'll benefit from befriending more people who work there. He's pretty accident prone.]

Hell, I could help you with that. I work with wood all the time. Used to be my main gig. I was the Hammer of the Hammer and Tongs woodworks and blacksmith. I can't make you an iron fence, but I can deffo make you a mean wooden top. Or a kendama or something.

You should rest, L-- Dr. Rosen.

[She starts to say "Lee" because the memories from everyone's fake lives are still there, but stops herself because the reality is that she only knows of Rosen from seeing him on the network.]

No doubt whatever you want to work on can wait for a few hours, yes?

[Rosen smiles softly. He feels the same awkwardness, Ikaruga. He's not even openly addressed the fact that he spent a good portion of the month sappily married to a man he barely knows.]

It's alright to call me Lee. The formalities don't really serve a purpose here, do they?

[A sigh]

I don't know that it can. It's not the job that needs to be finished quickly, it's more that I am in desperate need of something to take myself out of my own head. And I've let myself get away with it for too long now.

I suppose not, but I do think it should be up to the individual person as to whether or not they are comfortable with being addressed informally. I don't care if people use my title or not.

[A couple of people do, most do not.]

Do you think it will help you sleep better if you do?

That's a fair point.

[He hums as he thinks over that question]

I don't think it could make it worse.

Would you be able to get some sleep first before beginning? I think you would benefit from some sleep.

[There are a lot of people here who are bad at self-care, she's noticed. Whether that be due to a sense of obligation to others, or if they're simply chasing off too many personal demons to give themselves a break.]

[ Scanning the responses to see what kind of help Rosen has so far. ]

Dr. Rosen, I can provide the scrap metal and the paint. I'll bring some samples up later today, if you like. I have tools you can borrow, as well, if you don't have all the ones you need.

[ He's a bit worried about the doctor, who looks weary and worn. But he knows that one of the best things anybody can do with grief is to offer a tribute of some kind to the departed. The mention of crafts materials suggests that is what Rosen is thinking of. ]

[Rosen looks down at his hands at Curufin's compliment, unsure what to make of it. He believes Curufin is sincere, but is uncertain how worthy of the sincerity he actually is]

Ah...toys, actually. I wanted to make some things to help any children who might arrive here. Perhaps keep then in a chest at the clinic.

Nah, it'll be totally fine. Don't even need to go near the caves or anything. I'm just good at finding shit. Always have been.

[ I think you and him have a thing or two in common, the letter had read. She wonders what those things could possibly be.]

Well, I would be very grateful. I'm currently staying with Lance Sweets, I'm not sure if you know him or his apartment. But I am planning to work on the project in my own apartment. The top of the third spire.

[The look upon Regis' face is wrecked with such worry. He can tell that Rosen has become a tad gaunt looking as of late. Regis can see it all over Rosen's face as he speaks. It's almost as if Rosen has become ill but Regis knows that isn't the case. Although, depression within itself is truly an illness of the mind. Regis been there. Hell, he only recently recovered from his melancholy and that is all thanks to the return of his son.]

...I do not believe I would be much help but, perhaps I could keep you company as you work?

[Regis' presence is one that brings up conflicting emotions in Rosen after the last event came to its end. It's not awkwardness, Rosen is not ashamed or embarrassed for having been tricked into believing he was partner to Regis, but there is a whole lot of confusion that was born of that scenario. Perhaps it would have been easier to have just been flustered and embarrassed. But instead Rosen is left wondering 'why'. Why could he be happy, and why could he be a decent and well-meaning partner to someone only in an illusion? What is it about himself that makes all closeness of that kind an inevitable train wreck?

And because neither of them has broached the subject, he has no idea how Regis feels in the aftermath of all of that madness.

But still he is glad of Regis' message, even if he feels like there's an elephant in the room laughing at them. He manages a faint smile for him when he answers]
