If only I knew! From what I have seen, it seems to stem from prejudice and misunderstanding, and sometimes outright cruelty. [He's thinking of the cur that burned his partner's garden out of a small-minded, misguided need for revenge for that last one in particular.] If you are not from his world then I hope you at least do not subject him to the former... but now I find myself wondering why I even give people the chance.

[Of course the rationale part of him knows: it's not so much giving people the chance to harm his partner as it is giving him the chance to foster new, potentially beneficial relationships. He cannot protect the clergyman from everything, and he certainly can't isolate him from the people around him; Carlisle did that to himself before coming here, and years of living as a recluse have clearly done him no favors. The friendships that he's forged here have been good for him in so many ways...

Rage's influence, however, continues to drown that out. Why should Carlisle need friends when he has him, his partner? He's all he needs; everyone else just has the potential to hurt him. He has to keep the clergyman safe. That is what he is here for.]
