hadriel | Video One: The Play's the Thing (backdated to August 12th)

[the video opens on a young woman sitting sideways on a large, overstuffed armchair. legs crossed and slung over one arm, head resting on the other. she's got an anticipatory smile on her face, like someone who has a secret]

First thing is, I don't know most of you and most of you don't know me, so Alice? This is Hadriel. Hadriel? This is Alice. Moving on.

Okay, I think we're all in agreement that the entertainment options around here? Suck. [she waves a hand] With the exception of the Speakeasy because who doesn't love booze? But anyway, entertainment!

We have no TVs. No movies. No internet. Not even books. [she rolls her eyes to show what she thinks about that option] But there's one thing we do have and that's people.

And what can you do with people, I can hear you all asking. And the answer to that is plays. Acting! And I even have an idea for the play: the history of Hadriel. 'Cause not all of us have been here five million years.

First act can be a drama, the story of when it was just you guys, Fear and Hope. Second act is a comedy, the weird shit that happened when the rest of the gods came back. Third act? The Null attack. Which will be a musical. And you can't talk me out of that one, so don't even bother trying.

So I'm looking for volunteers! Actors, stagehands, costumers, set painters, shit like that. So fucking volunteer. And those of you going out to sea, don't worry. It's gonna take some time to get things organized, so you can get in on this, too.

I might be able to help with painting or music. But how deep are you going to get into the bad history? I don't want to trigger bad memories for people.

[Jo looks doubtful when she starts her response.]

You want the battle where people died to be a musical?

History of Hadriel? Now that'd be interesting but I wonder if we have reliable source for that.

[she shrugs]

You ever see Rent? or Les Mis? People die in musicals all the time.

Mn. [This is... an interesting idea.] Have been around since nearly the beginning. If you need any fact-checking about the bullshit we've been through to dramatize it, have plenty of firsthand perspective.

[It's ridiculous, but hey. She's been saying how they need more things to do around here that isn't drinking and bitching and waiting for crap to happen.]

I think there are people here who've been here from the start. Or close enough to it.

I'm gonna take you up on that. Starting now. Were Hope and Fear fighting or were they working together?

[exactly! Jane's been going stir crazy around here with so little to do]

Of course. So are they going to be the scripts writers? Or is that what you're going to do

Pretty sure they never actually fought each other, beyond some verbal disagreements on how to do things and getting strength from us. Think the clashing would be expected since one half of their "family" are polar opposites of the other half.

It'll be a collaborative process.

Even that's useful. I mean, who says people can't play the gods?

So, what were some of the early things done to get emotions?

Maybe you should ask from Gods. I'm sure they have juicy details.

This is people's lives, who are still here. It's different.

Been here for a couple years, can probably give you some details on stuff that's gone down.

I can provide the musical score if you'd like. I got a guitar.

I don't know shit about acting or plays, but I was a carpenter back in the day. If you need anything built, I can probably do it for ya.

[Magnus certainly isn't good at acting or anything along those lines, but he does enjoy singing and dancing and all that jazz. Plus, it would give him something to do once he's back from being a pirate boy and he never minds taking on a project that lets him work with his hands.]

That's good, 'cause we're gonna need stuff built. Probably starting with the stage itself. I need to scope out empty buildings, see which one would be best.

[Delmar is practically beside himself in his nervous excitement, and it's obvious in the way he wrings his fingers together. He had only ever gotten up the courage to confess it to James before he died, but had Delmar had a chance to do his life over, he would have wanted to act. It was his dream.]

I can try to teach you again if you'd like. It'd give me something to do around here.

But yeah, no problem. I'll start working on a piece and give it to you for opinions.

It happened and it could happen again. You can't just make it happy.

[she notices his nervousness and tries for a friendly smile]

Absolutely! I want as many people as possible involved.

Seriously? That's really cool of you. I might have to take you up on that.
