[Hannibal looks tired. Will has been missing for a couple days now, and he had been hoping that he was merely elsewhere, dealing with the death of Abigail's doppelganger at Hannibal's hands. But Will has not returned, and now Hannibal must contemplate the possibility, once again, that he might never see his friend again.]

My apologies for the intrusion, but has anyone seen Will Graham in the past few days?

[ Hannibal isn't the only one looking for Will. Pell appears onscreen fussing the end of his braid, looking very much like the bearer of bad news. ]

...I tried to call him last night and he isn't on the contacts list anymore. I think he went home.

[Hannibal had noticed that, but was hoping there was some way that Will had merely blocked him. Apparently not.]

Thank you for letting me know.

[ There's no reason for Will to have blocked Pell specifically -- it's possible he could have blocked everyone and wandered off, but unlikely. ]

You're his roommate, right? Do you mind if I come by?

Not at all. You're quite welcome.

Thank you. I'll be right there.

[ He closes the feed and heads over right away, knocking politely. The first thing he notices is that there's no bark in response... no dog. ]

[Hannibal is, as always, impeccably dressed when he answers the door, but his courteous smile shows his tiredness and sorrow.]

Hello. Please, do come in.

[He steps to the side and holds the door open for the man.]

[ So polite, as always. Most of Pell's experience with Hannibal has been at the clinic, and that one dinner party, but he's wishing now that they knew each other better. So he could offer some sort of comfort in Will's absence. He steps inside and tries to stop fidgeting. ]

I'm sorry this is the reason I'm visiting.

Are you holding up alright?

[There are so few people that Hannibal knows well in this place, since Hannibal's relationships are carefully forged, and so much of his attention has been on Will.]

I am doing as well as to be expected, I suppose.

[He gestures toward the couch.]

Please. Sit. May I offer you some wine?

Oh... sure.

[ He takes a seat and watches Hannibal move around the apartment, trying to ignore the feeling that Will could come around the corner and join them any moment. Will's gone. ]

I never even asked how you two knew each other.

[Hannibal had already set out a bottle and two glasses on the counter in the kitchen. He picked up a corkscrew and was easing the cork out of the bottle when Pell made his comment.]

We've known each other for some time. Long before coming here. We were...colleagues, predominantly.

[The cork popped out, and Hannibal poured two glasses.]

Colleagues, really? Are you a doctor specifically for law enforcement..?

[ He's not sure how those two things fit together -- there's not much by way of law enforcement in his world to start with. ]

We both worked as profilers for the FBI, I as a psychiatrist.

[Hannibal returns to the living room and hands Pell a glass before sitting in an armchair.]

Thank you. [ He takes the glass with a little smile, settling back against the couch cushions. This is where he first met Will, on this couch. ] I didn't know that you were a profiler, too.

Did you work on the same cases?

Many of them, yes.

How did you two meet?

Will was hurt and called for help... and it turned out he was in a worse way than just injuries. I worked with him for awhile, doing healing sessions, and we became friends.

[ He takes a sip of wine, then shakes his head ever so slightly. ]

Of course, being friends here means going through terrible things together. But there were not so terrible times, too.

[Ah, yes. Hannibal leaned forward slightly.]

When I arrived, he mentioned that there was someone who had been attempting to heal him. He had bacterial encephalitis, and was quite ill. I'm glad he had you to help him.

Is that what it's called? I've never been to school for medicine, I don't know the proper names for much. I could just feel that it was an infection.

I am, sadly, quite familiar with the disease, primarily because Will had been afflicted with it before, around when we first made our acquaintance. It causes seizures, hallucinations, blackouts, personality changes...it can also be difficult to treat, even in the best of circumstances.

I'm glad I managed, then. You know what the resources are like here.

[ Another sip of wine, after which he holds the glass with both hands, looking thoughtful. ]

Have you ever taught before, Dr Lecter?

Indeed I do. I've done some work at the clinic. Resources are rather lacking.

[He tilts his head at the question.]

I have had students in the past, yes.

[ Pell fusses his wine glass a little more before asking: ]

Would you be willing to take one here?

I was getting lessons on human medicine from Dr Banner, but he left some time ago.

I would be honored. Can you tell me specifically what your former instructor was imparting?

Oh, I have notes if you'd like to look through them. We'd just covered all the systems and were discussing the most common illnesses that afflict them. In case someone here was sick with something that wasn't acute, but that I could still find a way to heal. We were on different kinds of heart and lung damage.

It's difficult without patients but I think I was still learning a lot.

I would like to look at the notes to avoid undue repetition. And I'm sure, given a long enough period of time, we shall have patients to cover the basics at least.

[He takes another sip of his wine, before setting it aside.]

You said "human medicine." I assume that means that you are not human.

Of course. I can bring them over anytime.

[ Pell tilts his head, trying to gauge how Hannibal will take this news. Not everyone trusts non-humans, though there are plenty in Hadriel. ]

I was born human, turned hara -- Wraeththu. It's an evolution, and we have certain special abilities. It's how I can heal.

[ More and more, Elena is feeling guilty for keeping her distance from everyone. If she's around, then maybe she can witness or even stop these disappearances.

Her brow furrows as she addresses the man she hasn't met yet.

Will is one of her friends here, a real friend she trusts, so this is concerning. It's one thing for Emily, a relatively new person to meet to have gone home. ]

No, I haven't seen him in a few weeks. Is he missing?

I've not seen him in a few days. I thought that perhaps he needed some time to himself. But it appears as if he might not be present in Hadriel any longer.

He's not answering any messages? [ She minimizes the screen showcasing this man's face and scrolls through hers, seeing if she's missed any. The last time she'd seen him in person, she hadn't been in her right mind. ] He still could be. I've been taking my own time to myself. He could be, too. Is there a reason you think he would? Do you know where he'd go if he were?

He was rather upset after what happened with his phantom. I'm afraid I had to destroy the creature in order to save Will's life, and he did not take it well. I would expect him to go to the river, or spend time with his animals, but I've searched both those places.

[ Her feelings towards Will have always been ambivalent thanks to his doppelganger and then the subsequent meeting of the real him; one was a wolf and the other was a fawn in her eyes. ]

Have you checked the contact list? If his name is gone, he's gone. [ Idly, she adds: ] I should ask Mello to add that bit of information to the guide.

[Hannibal's opinion of Sharon has been favorable only in the sense that she looked as if she could make a rather palatable ingredient.]

I had hoped that Will was somehow preventing me from contacting him in order to protect his solitude. Unfortunately, I have been informed of the truth of that.

Condolences, I guess. Or someone should toast to him for getting the hell out of here, right? [ It's... It's supposed to be a lighthearted joke in the face of something that is generally heartbreaking for a good chunk of people but it comes out flat.

She seems to realize that, though, and then: ] Sorry.

[Perhaps he should reconsider her place in his rolodex.]

No need to apologize. If Will is happier wherever he is right now, then indeed, it is something to be celebrated.

[Of course, Hannibal knows where Will is, and what he is likely to be facing, and it is not preferable.]

[ Sharon's rudeness and hot-temper often put her on the shit list for most people quickly. It's defense. It's a 'hurt-you-before-you-hurt-me' mentality and it's been a difficult thing to shed. One she hasn't yet. One she might never. ]

If? It sounds like you might have your doubts.

[He pauses. Hannibal very rarely lies outright, so whatever he says will be the truth, and he needs to frame it carefully.]

He and I are from the same world. As difficult as this place can be, it is on the whole happier than the one he would presumably return to.

Ah, got it. Don't worry, for most people, going home either means dying or torture or murder or... [ She doesn't actually mean 'don't worry' but Sharon is ever the one to pretend that she's got the hard shell of a turtle when the reality of it is, she's as soft as her insides. The ease of her first statement dies quickly. ] It never seems like anyone gets to go home to anything good.

Guess that says something about the people brought in.

You'd think that this sad, tired story would be one we'd all get used to after awhile.

I suppose I have not been here long enough to be so jaded.

Maybe you will be. Or maybe your time here will be truncated, which is frequently the story.
