I appreciate the vote of confidence, though I do understand that it was more for Sorrow than for myself. Nevertheless, we will be undertaking an investigation shortly. Our main goal is to uncover any allies the Null have in the city - this should be no surprise.

However, I will admit that we have not conducted an investigation such as this before. Our kind never had any need to. As such, we would appreciate any constructive input you would like to give, as well as any assistance you may wish to offer. We have discussed this and decided on a course of action already, but Sorrow and I have agreed that some of you may have more experience with this sort of thing. It would be foolish of us to ignore that. We are listening to your suggestions.

However, please note that I said constructive input.

Are... both of you going to be investigating everyone together?

[ Not that she minds, since. She has no reason to not trust Hope so far, but is undeniably more trusting and comfortable with the other half of the investigation team. ]

And I hope that you wouldn't, but. [ A pause. This is a little difficult to speak of, more than even she anticipated. ] Yao used to, uh. Manipulate people, sometimes, if they didn't just outright torture them. Promise them things they couldn't or tell people what they wanted to hear to convince them to join their side or spill the truth about stuff.

So maybe try to avoid anything like that. Not that I think you would since that's technically 'false hope' and I know you're the genuine deal, dude.

We will likely do it separately, in order to get more done. However, we'll be conferring together about each move we make.

[Which will probably turn out to be Sorrow making smart but harsh decisions and Hope arguing for the choices that are nicer to people.]

I don't think that I would be very good at that even if I wished to do it. For deception like that, Confusion or even Tranquility would have been a better choice. I believe we'll be more straightforward.

And yes, that is the case. It's more a case of personalities rather than anything else - we work better together if we get along. If Fear and I were to take on this investigation together, it would not go well. Sorrow is intelligent and level-headed. I trust his counsel and his decisions, because I know they are fully thought out even if I don't necessarily agree with them.

Looks like you guys could use it, honestly. I know I'm in the minority, probably, but... I'm on your side.

She also quells any irrational jealousy at how well Sorrow and Hope seems to work together. How well they fit. How she'll never be that, even if she tried. ]

As for Fear - a full explanation would take some time. In short, he is reckless and foolish, he does not listen to me, and he persists in acting like a child. I don't see how anyone could stand it.

So, he's... a bit of a brat. Is he the youngest? Or, wait. Maybe he's in the middle. That could cause that too when they don't feel like they're paid enough attention to because they're not oldest but not the baby either.

He and I are around the same age. We generally don't judge things in such a way - though Sorrow is older by some years, and we respect that.

Fear would be a brat regardless of his age.

Sorrow definitely seems like the older brother type though. How does that work, by the way like... How do you guys come into being or whatever?

Others of our species, older than us, made us. They split off a piece of themselves, sometimes with help, often alone.

My people, uhm. The story goes that when the god Izanagi returned from the Land of Yomi, he purified himself in a bath. As he dried his body, each falling drop of water soaked into the soil and imbued the land with supernatural potential. Thus, the yokai were born. So my kind were born from the leftover power of a god.

We do not have an origin myth. Religion has never been a part of our own culture. Likely we evolved in some way - it isn't something we dwell on.

Huh, that's... cool. Must be nice, not to wonder or worry about things like that. A greater purpose, higher power.

What about the Null? Do they believe in anything? Besides destroying you guys, I guess.

I don't believe so. They are an entirely logical species that wishes to eradicate emotions. Belief systems have little place in that.
