I appreciate the vote of confidence, though I do understand that it was more for Sorrow than for myself. Nevertheless, we will be undertaking an investigation shortly. Our main goal is to uncover any allies the Null have in the city - this should be no surprise.

However, I will admit that we have not conducted an investigation such as this before. Our kind never had any need to. As such, we would appreciate any constructive input you would like to give, as well as any assistance you may wish to offer. We have discussed this and decided on a course of action already, but Sorrow and I have agreed that some of you may have more experience with this sort of thing. It would be foolish of us to ignore that. We are listening to your suggestions.

However, please note that I said constructive input.

[ There's a pause. Mostly because he's used to suggesting Zone of Truth and having someone go "how would that even help at all right now" or "HEAL HIM, MERLE". His enthusiasm doesn't wane. ]

Oh, great! So everything you gotta know is pretty much on the tin. It's, uh, creating a zone where everyone's gotta tell the truth. People can fight it off sometimes, but it's pretty obvious when they do that, so you're not losin' much on it. Except maybe a spell slot. Do gods use spell slots around here?

No. I have no idea what a spell slot is. Your 'zone of truth' sounds very useful, though.

I've always found it very useful! Most useful spell I know! And that's saying something, 'cause I'm a cleric. I'm supposed to use magic for healing.

[ He laughs a little. ]

I've got one other one I used to throw around for a little Q and A, but I, I pretty much just got my ass killed every time I used it. And people around here got a lotta bones to pick, so it's good to leave it off the table.

People here can be very angry about a very wide variety of things.

How does your zone of truth work? What powers it?

Ah, you know. Magic. Holy magic. I'm not in too good with that here lately, but it's your standard setup! And you get a good ten minutes of truth out of whoever's hangin' around.

Unless they get through it, I guess. Works like a dream for me, though.

I see. It's certainly an interesting idea. I have no doubt we have the ability to force you to tell the truth, if we wish.

I will look into this.

Yeah, that's the spirit! All aboard the truth train, where we belong! So I'm gonna guess as far as emotions go, you're probably not one of the debbie downer ones.

I am Hope. Usually, it's considered a positive thing. Some of you seem to disagree.

It's like they say, buddy: can't win 'em all. And I mean, you all put your names out there, position of godly power, all that, that lich ghosts thing and the reflection crap that went on--

Look, I've always been a hope kinda guy. And what I know is, sometimes you gotta think there's somethin' to beat so you can have hope in the first place. Otherwise you're just stuck in a situation that stinks and you don't know if it'll ever end. And no one can do much of anything like that.

I don't disagree. However, a better target for anger would be the Null. They are, after all, ultimately the reason you are all here.

[ Merle chuckles. ]

I mean, yeah, okay. Hate to break it to ya, but mistake number one is thinkin' I'm not dense as a bag of rocks!

That does not seem very complimentary towards yourself. However, I suppose you would know your own abilities better than I would.

Be upfront about what you got. That's the real key to success. Or as much success as you can get. Don't worry, though. Give it a few years, and if I'm still around, we'll be thick as thieves by then.

I would hope that this does not take a few years to resolve.

Hope's always a good first step! It's all about hangin' onto it. Guess you'd know that better than anyone, huh?
