Others are just as responsible for their actions as you are for your own. If you believed that shit could've been different, he'd have to have made the effort not to be an asshole as well, and it sounds like he had ample time to work on that. But he didn't. He blew it. That's not on you.

[Carlisle was bending over backwards trying to excuse his own mistreatment the first time they talked about this. There's no way he can be allowed to claim all the fault there, even if some of that blame is on him.]
