So, is this normal? I mean, it's not normal, obviously, but should I be expecting more of this crap while I'm stuck here?

It's not even close to ideal. I've been here five minutes and I've already been attacked by trees and had people wandering around in my head while I'm asleep.

I can't say I understand it myself. I will say, however, that it is best simply not to compare this world to your own; it will only lead to frustration. Logic that may seem normal and rational to you does not apply here.
