It's a casteless lady -or sometimes a guy- who hooks up with a noble in hopes of bearing said noble a child. Caste goes through the same-sex parent, so a casteless woman bearing a noble's child will have that child be a noble, too. Not only that, but the woman who does so is raised up to that status. It's either that, the carta, or menial labor.
