009 [Video]
[After a month or so of mostly sticking to text and voice, Lance is back to video for another network broadcast. He's still looking a little unwell, but definitely better than in his last post or any time he's spoken with someone in person since then.
He was also fortunate enough to be in his apartment when the dust storm started, so he doesn't have to camp out in some public place or with people he doesn't like. Hurray! And since pretty much everyone is stuck inside somewhere, this actually ends up being a good time to make a network post to address a few things.]
Hello, everyone. For those who just arrived or otherwise haven't met me yet, I'm Dr. Lance Sweets, and I'm a psychologist; if anyone ever needs or wants to speak to someone professionally, whether about being here or otherwise, you're welcome to send a message or call at any time.
[And that usual note out of the way--]
But I also wanted to discuss something somewhat unrelated, which is the subject of creating an organized directory of who has what skills that they're willing to teach, if asked. Many here want to learn new skills or hobbies, whether due to practicality or boredom or otherwise, but it can be difficult to figure out who to ask especially if you're new and may not want to either use the network for a general announcement, or approach someone you may not know individually.
So a list of who is willing to teach what skills, and who is alright with being asked to do so, would be beneficial a lot of people here. I can compile and maintain it as a file that can be shared.
[It's not like he's doing a whole lot at the moment, having pretty much quit working at the Clinic. He seems to briefly consider continuing with another topic but then ends the feed there; the other thing he wanted to discuss probably wouldn't go over as well as the first one, and he'd prefer everyone not get distracted.]

video.
[Because he doubts that's the only skill Atem has that's worth teaching.]
video.
「Such good friend, Lance, but that's how he sees things right now.」
video.
[He will totally call him out on this!!!]
video.
Thanks for the vote of confidence but what you see is what you get.
video.
You have no other skills, talents, or hobbies besides card games?
[Asked in a tone that indicates he would find that very unlikely.]
video.
I've been told I'm spectacular at big talk. Pretty sure that's one amazing talent.
「It might be, but now he's being a little sarcastic, he does keep one confident smirk at least, it's hard to see if there is anything wrong going on.」
It's not big deal, I'll be using that list myself when it's out there.
「Meaning, no, he won't talk.」
video.
[Lance will just be as patient as possible at the moment, trying to find the right balance of not giving up but not pushing either.]
video.
「Just saying.」
What else are you good at? Besides listening and shooting.
video.
[Lance has gotten out a few confrontations by using it, so he definitely considers it an important skill. He offers a small shrug at the question, though he's faintly pleased at the things that Atem listed.]
I play piano, and I'm a good writer.
[And other things, but sticking with some safe options that would also be teachable skills.]
video.
What do you write?
「He asks out of curiosity really.」
video.
[It's a really strange love story, but the people he based it on were really strange so it all works out.]
video.
video.
But he tries to move on to quickly, hoping it wasn't apparent.]
It really would make an awesome story, even if it might be considered so outlandish it would be difficult to suspend disbelief.
video.
He could ask, but knowing Lance...」
Then you would have your first science-fantasy story.
video.
I would. Maybe my first movie, too; this would make a great movie.
[And Dr. Brennan had a movie made out of one of her books; he wants one too!]
video.
「No, he wouldn't, not that he wouldn't love to! Isn't it fun? To talk about hypothetical futures that none of them can have? It's distracting at least. Eh, he's trying not to put too much thought into it, it'd be depressing.」
Hey, say, is there something you always wanted to learn that you never had the time for?
「Look, he'd be sorry, but the topic is out there.」
video.
That's a good question. I pursued most of my interests, at least to some extent, but looking back I think I'd say that I would've liked to learn more languages. I only speak two, and I'm not even that great at the second one.
[It's practical to speak other languages, but it's also just something really neat. Psychological studies also indicate that there are lots of mental benefits to learning more languages, which is something he's both interested in and would probably be good for him.]
What about you?
video.
「Hmm, he needs to think about that too, but briefly since he asked the question. He did learn a lot of things back home come to think of it, he had a good life and never truly envied anyone's life, but in this modern world, everything is so shiny and his time in it was too short.」
Maybe how to drive a bike. A real one, not like the mopeds here. Maybe also... 「He gives a little playful shrug.」 Learn how to play an electric guitar. Surfing sounds cool too. And hmm... Dunno, technology is pretty new to me, maybe learn a little more about it in general wouldn't be so bad. It can do some amazing stuff I never imagined could be done.
「Oh well, he has some dreams.」
video.
[He can't help but smile a little as Atem talks, listing more and more things, and although he can't help on all of them--]
A few people are offering to teach guitar, although I'm not sure on the electric part. I believe there may be a computer in the lab here, also; if you're interested in technology, maybe you could learn. And, if we can ever find or get a bike, there are several people who could teach you.
I can't help on the surfing, though. But it does sound cool.
[It was always one of those things he never thought about doing himself, but still admired.]
video.
「Aw, man, Atem smiles a bit at all that, he can indeed learn a lot of stuff here too, not sure what the point would be but beats doing nothing at all.」
I guess I just have to ask, right?
「Then his face brightens a little more when he remembers something.」
Did you know there is sand boarding? Dunno if the dunes here would be good for that.
「He heard that existed during his last visit to Egypt. Well, not his Egypt. Didn't paid that much attention, he was more preoccupied with other stuff to care about the tour guides trying to catch their attention. To which he looks a little more than thoughtful for a second. But he moves on quickly. There isn't a day that passes without him thinking on what happened that day, today it's no different.」
video.
[And an unusual combination, but you know, in this place there's only so much that sort of thing is really weird.
He smiles at the sudden excitement from Atem, finding it difficult not to be affected by it, and nods.]
Yeah, I've heard of it; it's also called dune surfing, and I think there's a huge park for it in Oregon, in the US. I had a roommate once who was really into extreme spots.
video.
「No wait, hold on.」
Is it any close to California?
「What does it even matter! IT'S NOT LIKE HE'S GOING BACK THERE!」
video.
[Because it's nice to dream, okay.]
video.
「Why so big, America?」
