009 [Video]
[After a month or so of mostly sticking to text and voice, Lance is back to video for another network broadcast. He's still looking a little unwell, but definitely better than in his last post or any time he's spoken with someone in person since then.
He was also fortunate enough to be in his apartment when the dust storm started, so he doesn't have to camp out in some public place or with people he doesn't like. Hurray! And since pretty much everyone is stuck inside somewhere, this actually ends up being a good time to make a network post to address a few things.]
Hello, everyone. For those who just arrived or otherwise haven't met me yet, I'm Dr. Lance Sweets, and I'm a psychologist; if anyone ever needs or wants to speak to someone professionally, whether about being here or otherwise, you're welcome to send a message or call at any time.
[And that usual note out of the way--]
But I also wanted to discuss something somewhat unrelated, which is the subject of creating an organized directory of who has what skills that they're willing to teach, if asked. Many here want to learn new skills or hobbies, whether due to practicality or boredom or otherwise, but it can be difficult to figure out who to ask especially if you're new and may not want to either use the network for a general announcement, or approach someone you may not know individually.
So a list of who is willing to teach what skills, and who is alright with being asked to do so, would be beneficial a lot of people here. I can compile and maintain it as a file that can be shared.
[It's not like he's doing a whole lot at the moment, having pretty much quit working at the Clinic. He seems to briefly consider continuing with another topic but then ends the feed there; the other thing he wanted to discuss probably wouldn't go over as well as the first one, and he'd prefer everyone not get distracted.]

the deed is done. the challenge has been issued.
the streets of hadriel will run red upon this night.

wtf i thought k was teaching u magic? shes not fillin u in on the rich history of our ppl?
no subject
No, apparently I am not being properly informed of the cultural background of what I'm learning.
no subject
for real tho theres prob a lot of bs historical baggage w. magic but it doesnt matter. its like idk christmas. its just a thing we do now.
hey is k teachin u shit beyond cantrips? is she havin u make a focus?
no subject
[He's not huge on history but history of magic? Hell yeah.]
Just cantrips so far; I learned them just before the Null invasion.
[So the implication is probably clear there in that there just hasn't been opportunity to learn more than that.]
no subject
[He means it lovingly. This shit is probably way more interesting to someone who doesn't deal with magic every day, though. HH would be the same way if he met someone from, like, space. Tell him everything about space, please. The history of magic, though? Fuck that. That's run-of-the-mill boring where he comes from.]
nice. thats good timing. bet that shit was more useful than ur gun.
lol.
gl w. the focus if thats in ur future. ks a fuckin pro at illegally crafting focuses at this point but lmk if u need an extra set of hands.
u should be ok since ur a noob but the process can be a real bitch.
no subject
[He's obviously joking.]
Not necessarily more useful, considering I had to be very close to use it, but it definitely made a difference.
Why would being new at it make it easier? What goes into the process?
[He's suddenly a little concerned; that sounds ominous.]
no subject
the process of crammin ur noob magic into a focus will be tricky at first bc ur not used to controllin it but the aftermath wont be as hard on u.
like the ritual or w.e u want to call it of makin the focus might take a couple tries but ull be fine after.
u might feel like shit for a day or two but thats abt it.
if i had to remake my focus tho?
the channeling shit would be a piece of cake. that shits second nature anymore.
but the aftermath fucking sucks.
what u end up w. depends on the type of magic u do. kynas mostly evocation so when her focus got fucked she basically had the flu for a week or two. it was bad.
im mostly enchantment and illusion so i get fun mental shit.
its like a sustained psychotic break.
its rly fun.
no subject
That's good to know, at least. And even more reason not to let it get destroyed or something after I make it.
The flu definitely sounds better than weird mental stuff. But it wore off after awhile?
no subject
not that i mind. its just trippy.
u should know what ur gettin into tho.
yeah its not permanent.
the stronger ur magic is the longer ur likely to be fucked up. or the more intense the fuckup will be. or both.
a couple weeks is abt the standard for where k and i were when we lost our focuses.
itd be worse now but idk how much. not plannin to find out. lol.
should just be a day or two for u.
no subject
Okay, well at least it's not permanent, however bad it might or might not be. I can definitely handle a day or two though if it means being able to learn more magic.
[Not only is it really useful and really cool, but he enjoys it a lot. And actually, that reminds him--]
Kind of a weird, out of nowhere question, but I was teaching Kyna piano and mentioned that music and magic kind of feel similar to me. Piano and guitar are pretty different how they work, but is it at all the same sort of feeling for you?
no subject
ig if u have the choice its prob weird to have to imbue some object w. ur fuckin life essence or w.e.
heads up on that too btw. get ready to have ur focus feel like an extension of ur body except its not attached.
that feels rly weird at first but u get used to it.
just dont fuck up and lose it or let someone else touch it.
[He's just gonna have to write up a dos and don'ts guide for Lance or something. Or, well, Kyna probably has it covered. He's trying hard to resist the urge to micromanage. She handles this shit all the time at the guild. Lance will be fine.
BUT FIRST: !!!]
wait u play? awesome. where tf did u get a piano?
and lmfao ur teaching k. hows that goin?
hm tho thats a good q. idt ive ever thought abt it like that before.
but it is sort of similar now that u mention it. i can see how itd feel similar for u anyway.
ive been able to use magic for as long as i can remember. its genetic for me. picking up new spells and shit has always been second nature.
but i had to work at learnin guitar. its p much second nature at this pt too but if i dont play for a while ill get rusty. picking up new songs takes effort.
some spells are harder than others sure but it never feels like work in the same way. i can go months w.o touching a spell and ill have no prob casting it on the spot if i need it.
but some shit went down blah blah tldr my magic got reset for a while. had to start from whatever comes before scratch. actual zero.
which meant i had to learn shit the hard way for a few months and that fucking blew but it did feel more like music when i had to work at it.
no subject
[He will take the guides he can get!!!]
Yeah, I learned when I was a kid. Dr. Rosen has a piano so I used his. Kyna's doing really well for just starting out.
That's really interesting and definitely makes sense; I think it might be kind of be the opposite situations for us, since I picked up piano really fast like it was a natural thing, instead of having to work at learning it, and I can not play for a long time and then do so and it's like I never stopped.
[He's also one of those people that can play something back just from hearing it, but it already feels like bragging to say what he has said and so he doesn't add that.]
The whole resetting thing sounds terrible though.
no subject
if ur focus gets destroyed or u decide to deactivate it or if anything happens where u need to move that magic around ur gonna have side effects.
when ur focus gets destroyed ur magic doesnt have anywhere to go so it gets sucked back into u. ur body is gonna flip bc suddenly theres all this extra magic and it has to recalibrate to accommodate it.
same w. making the focus in the first place. ur bodys like whoa suddenly im missing a bunch of magic we have to adjust.
yeah getting ur focus destroyed fuckin kills but u dont actually lose the magic. it just fucks up the balance w. ur magic which in turn fucks u up.
[Man, he's gonna have to ask Kyna about the piano thing. How dare she not tell him!! Whatever, he'll come back to that later.]
o nice. that makes sense if u learned it as a kid. i didnt pick up guitar until my late teens so im good but not that good.
the reset was fucking awful. luckily that shit is insanely rare. like ive never heard of it happening to anyone else before. i still dont know how he did it to me in the first place.
but w.e it was was fuckin nasty magic and i highly doubt ull have to worry abt anything like that here.
no subject
That makes a lot of sense, thank you. I think I've got it now.
No matter when you learned it guitar is still a pretty cool skill.
Hopefully not, yeah. Did someone do it to you on purpose?
[Because that mention of 'he' makes Lance wonder if this was some sort of altercation, rather than an accident or something like what happened with Kyna's magic after Hope botching the resurrection. And, of course, Lance is nosy, and therefore has to ask.]
no subject
[Also: Whoops. Way to go on that slip, HH. Oh well. It's not like it's a state secret. That was a long time ago at this point. It's dealt with.]
yeah.
i had an ex that fucked up my magic as a power play. it was a bad situation.
dont date ur patients lance. lmao.
no subject
[And... Yeah, that whole explanation--brief as it is--sounds seriously messed up. He wishes he could be surprised, but those sorts of people seem to exist in every world and adding magic into the mix just makes for more ways for them to cause problems.]
I'm sorry you had to deal with that. And considering that I both have a girlfriend and that dating patients is incredibly unethical for several reasons, I definitely make it a rule not to do so.
[And he's seriously judging Harlan's ex; he would've even without that last part about dating patients, which goes for any sort of doctor and not just psychologists.]
no subject
its fine.
it sucked but it was a long time ago now.
[A couple years, anyway.]
it was pretty fucked up. i knew abt the ethics issue but its easy to get attached from the patient side.
maybe from the psych side too ig. idk. idt that was the case here.
whats that like tho? havin so many ppl sharin really personal shit w. u and trying to stay professional.
no subject
[But he agrees in that giving them more to do would definitely help with generating emotions, but that would also require the gods caring to do anything; considering they're barely managing food, it's probably too much to ask.
And yeah, that sounds seriously fucked up.]
It can be on both sides, yes, but usually more so for the patient as a natural response to putting their trust in their doctor; that only makes it more reprehensible when it's taken advantage of.
[Lance really, really dislikes any sort of doctor misusing their positions.]
It depends on who it is, what the subject is, and how well I know them. There are times when it's not as difficult as you might think, but others in which I have to be constantly aware of whether I'm becoming too personally involved or otherwise unable to be impartial.
[And since he can't refer patients to another psychologist here, as he would normally in those instances, it can end up being a bit of a mess.]
no subject
reprehensible is a good word for it.
[He knew that at the time, too. It was just easy to think it was worth it, or that their situation could be an exception. Turns out, very much not the case. Urgh.]
that makes sense. ig w. all the training and shit u need to be a psych u prob learn to be rly professional abt it.
it sounds impossible to me but i didnt go to med school and shit ykno.
sounds like ur really fuckin good at ur job too.
sorry u cant catch a break even in hadriel. lol.
u should think abt trainin other ppl to be like ur interns or somethin. delegate.
no subject
[Which was its own hell.]
But thank you, I appreciate it. Though you know, as great as interns would be, I think that would be a level of self-importance I would never be able to live down here.
[Even if it'd be great. Wow does he miss his secretary from back home.]
no subject
w.e sounds close enough to med school to me. idk the diff anyway.
lmao fair enough.
what abt addin urself to the list as a psych tho? offer to teach ppl shit if they want to learn it so u dont have to constantly corral everyone.
assuming thats what ur doin.
i actually dont have a clue how many ppl are up ur ass abt that shit.
no subject
[And considering the personality types of a lot of those here, he could see this going really badly really quickly.]
There are some general first-aid kind of things I might be able to teach, though, like how to help a friend who's going through a difficult time, or that sort of thing.
no subject
some ppl already seem to forget that shit around here.
first aid shit would be good tho. thats more like what i was thinking. u phrased it better.
write up a handbook on what shit not to pull. lol.
