[ The video comes to life but there's no face on the other end, just a handwritten note along with a sloppy signature. Some may recognize the last name, others may not, but she honestly doesn't care. She has questions. She wants answers (despite the fact they likely don't have them all). And she desperately wants to find her friends.

The handwritten note is just precaution. She remembers the Null, even if her memory is fuzzy. Just as she doesn't sign it with her full name or tag it with her name. ]

Run down, please. We were underground and not cooking in the sun last I remember.

I could also use some help acquiring some sunscreen SPF... I don't know, whatever the fuck will keep me from turning into a tomato, and a pair of sunglasses.

Here. ( The glass is held out for a wordless toast. Kate hardly needs to get hammered, but she's not about to say no to the promise of booze or tell Sharon she can't. Sometimes it's the only thing that works.

Yes, I'm sure I could. I'll make the circuit of all those weird shops and see if I can find the materials I would need. With luck, I'll find something that can be easily modified. Worst case scenario is that I have to synthesize some glass of the right type and tint it myself. But I can do that. No problem.

By all means, I sure as hell wouldn't stand between you and cultist burning. My experiences with them haven't been very nice, either.

It's just an easy way of telling you that you'll do what you think is best, or right, or whatever. You'll do what you know, what you're accustomed to.

When we die, that's it. Death is an end to pain, to suffering, to joy, and to life. It's an important part of the cycle of life. [ She frowns, pulling her lower lip between her teeth as her brows pull down. It wasn't an easy thing to explain and, truthfully, some may handle it easier than others, but to Sharon, to relive after death is the most painful thing someone can do to another being.

[Girl starts to make a disagreeing noise, but cuts herself off to let Sharon finish in peace. Death hadn't been an end to anything for the Girl, just a continuation of misery until her spirit had been allowed back into the mortal plane. But she knows she had been a special case in her world. Maybe the people here were used to death equating to peace.

But what Sharon is telling her is familiar. The kind of familiar that she tries to keep shoved in a box in the back of her mind.]

I know it does. I just thought- well, I thought you meant it gave you something worse than the memories. Like that the gods would do something else, a punishment or something. The memories...I always thought that was just the price of coming back, no matter where you were from.

[She takes a breath and her voice becomes muffled as she sits back away from the device.]

No, not that I'm aware of. It's possible, I guess, but nothing I've seen or heard of. People have survived what should have been death but that comes at a similar price.

Sometimes livin' can be the worse thing that happens. Dyin' is always the easy part.

But I'm guessin' your world must have been pretty bad if you talk about near death like it's so common.

[ He knows she has a hard time asking for what she needs, and so he'll let her do some scouting for materials in order not to feel she's putting him out. Besides, he already knows she's very competent at finding things in the Hadriel environment. But her request doesn't seem inane to Curufin. If her eyes are sensitive to all this light, then she must protect them. ]

All right. First, see if there are already any sunglasses. If they were made for the gods' former hosts, I wouldn't be surprised if there were eight lenses! [ He doesn't know for sure what those beings looked like, even though many months ago somebody dredged up a body from the lake. Curufin never asked. But he's fairly sure it wasn't very human-like. ] If you find such a thing, I can modify it for human use.

But next best is tinted glass or plastics. And if not tinted, then clear. I can tint them myself. Big chunks of glass are good -- I can grind lenses, I have the tools for that.

Hmm, let me see. I still have some metal wire to make wireframes. But if you find any brass, copper, or steel wire, bring it. It would be nice to have a few choices.
