Good morning, everyone. 

For those of you who are not familiar with who I am, my name is Dr. Lee Rosen and I am currently on staff at the clinic. 

[But he's not going to go into further detail on that subject at the moment] 

Now I realize this is not an ideal time for a general survey question but...

[Demons and murder should generally take precedence over personal research but then again demons and murder are not exactly out of the ordinary in this place so if he waits to ask who knows when an actual opportune moment will present itself. For all anyone knows tomorrow the gods will feel like turning this city into a bouncy castle and the week after that they might be fleeing from carnivorous flower pots on stilts. 

So there's no time like the present] 

...I have a simple question to ask all of you and I'd be grateful to anyone willing to answer: 

Do you come from a world that: 

A. Has magic/superhuman abilities as innate in all beings

B. Has a mixture of magic/superhuman and non magic/non superhuman beings

C. Has no magic, no superhuman abilities innate in any beings 

Let me reiterate as per my last post that none of my questions are obligatory for anyone to answer, this is purely on a volunteer basis.

You're seeking this information to help those back home?

That is correct. I have patients back home who might be able to benefit from what I learn here. And if I can help them, perhaps I can help even more people like them.

[After all it has yet to be fully established just how many Alphas are actually out there]

Would it be safe to assume that you are defensive about this subject based on experience?

That's a worthy cause.

[It does make Kelson wonder why he didn't just offer it up in the first place, though.]

My people have been the subject of trauma and persecutions as a result of their heritage. The subject of even my own Deryni blood has been a rather turbulent topic.

Is this an issue of magic versus non-magic?

Not everyone from Gwynedd as well. I am working on it, but ignorance and fear are hard to fight.

[They wouldn't dare throw Kelson in prison. Excommunicate him and try and usurp him with various civil wars? Absolutely.]

In a way, although I'm not sure it's that simple. It's wrapped up in the idea that those with magic and magic like abilities are evil. That is what the Church teaches.

Or taught up until a month ago.

What is the nature of magic where you are from? Is it something from birth or something that is learned?

[Yes they are. Kelson would understand, trying to undo laws created hundreds of years ago without causing more fear and panic. He takes a breath, for courage.]

Usually it's from birth. You have magic if one of your parents or perhaps one of your ancestors were Deryni. Mine is a little unique however.

[Kelson fiddles with the device, trying to figure out how to change the settings and finally succeeds, changing it to private. His family has spent too long convincing others that their powers are divine right. Just because he's a known Deryni doesn't mean his family should suffer. If there was ever a way for this to get back home. Old habits.]

I get my Deryni blood through my mother. However, my family possesses the ability to assume full Deryni powers as well. It's usually activated first at a young age and then fully assumed when the next Haldane is crowned king.

What exactly is 'Deryni'? Is this a race? A tribe? Another kind of being?

Another race. Deryni have magic and we react different to some substances because of that. Some have different abilities than others. Healing for example is a rare gift. But we're not so different that we can't have children with humans, I'm living proof of that.

Does the church also disapprove of Deryni? Or just the human deryni children?

The Church disapproves of anything Deryni. Anyone with known Deryni ancestry is not allowed to join the clergy or even actively participate in the Church. Originally the Statutes of Ramos stripped Deryni of all rights, lands and titles or civil offices, including conducting any legal action, matrimony or simple inheritance without their Lord's permission.

Last month I succeeded in persuading the Bishop's to strike down the Church portion of the Statutes.

[One thing at a time. Riots were not what he needed. There were enough who were uncomfortable that their King was Deryni, considering it was technically illegal. ]

The Church used to burn Deryni. They almost succeeded in doing such to two of my advisors. And myself. We were excommunicated for using our abilities.

[that had been a thrilling letter he had gotten, finding out 11 of his Bishop's voted to excommunicate him.]
