There's a creature here who killed my friend, and injured my brother. I don't know what it calls itself, but my friend describes a woman with eyes as black as pitch.

[ His eyes are far too bright to be human, a feral fire lit behind them ]

Have a care for yourselves, for it has, apparently, killed at least once and tried to do so more than that.

[ And then almost absently ]

Probably because of who they are. They can't relate to people because they aren't--and never were--people.

You'd think they would, after all this time? I mean, I've only been here six months but I know people who have been around a lot longer than that.

You would hope so, but as you say, they clearly have not - from sheer incomprehension, or bloody minded stubborness remains to be seen.

I think it's a little of column A and a little of column B. Even after Delight screwed us over, they seem to think they can't fail or make a bad choice.

Aye, you capture their thought well in that. They are, in some ways, too dissimilar to us.

You know, what's truly tragic is that I think if they had come and simply asked there may well have been folk who would have come willing, out of the kindness of their hearts. But instead they take and keep, and so engender more resentment than anything else.

Yeah. Hell, I probably would've taken them up on it, if asked. Better to be alive here than dead back home. But they didn't ask and so... [she shrugs]

I might have, as well, especially considering the family I have found here - and there is little left for me in my own world.

But as you say... [ He echoes her shrug back at her wryly ]

Hopefully we will work out how to get home soon.

But what about people who are dead in their worlds? We can't go home again.

You would be welcome in mine. [ He offers quietly ]

I am sure that others would welcome those who had no place to go also.

[she is seriously knocked for a loop and just. gapes for a moment]

Yeah, I'd hope so. For their friends.

I would not offer if I did not mean it. [ He assures her ]

I have little enough of my own, but I know of places that you could go to, to find a new life.

There are a couple of people I could ask. I'd have to get used to things like no running water and no electricity, but I could do it.

They are rather convenient - I have grown rather spoilt, I think! Although running water we had worked out - it isn't hard - but electricity I think I will miss.

I've always had both, except for the time after the Null attack. It was a pain, but I could do it. And I'd eventually get used to it.

I have known times with and without - I much prefer with! But without works just as well, although I do rather miss hot water, when I don't have it. [ He nods ]

What is your world like?

My world? It's Earth. So it has running water and electricity and some technology. Not as much as most Earths since it's from further in the past than most people's Earths.

[there. that's nice and vague]

A lot of people seem to come from Earth. [ he muses ]

I wonder if the similarity in names means that the world I know will be known as Earth one day, or if they are entirely separate. I would like to see what Men become, I think.

I think most people mean well?

I like to hope so! Whether that 'meaning' translates into fact is another thing, of course.

Yeah, that sure is. Some people do better with the fact than others.
