[As much as Newt hates the idea of putting his face out there, he knows it's the fastest way to find his friends. He isn't holding his breath that anyone else is here, not after that Hope guy's announcement. Originally he'd assumed it was WICKED, yet another trial, but... now he isn't so sure.

No matter what this place is, it's clear that it hasn't been kind to Newt. He'd been pretty banged up when he'd arrived, but fighting bears hadn't helped his haggard appearance. He's also rationing what food he has because he's familiar with starvation and it's not something he wants to experience again.]

M'name's Newt. [His normally rather proper accent is slurring into something more gruff, and it might be clear from the circles that he hasn't been sleeping much—if at all.] I'm looking for friends. Mainly a coupla shanks named Thomas and Minho.

[His jaw tightens after the second name, but he pushes on.] I've been somewhere like this before. More times than I'd like to say, actually. Be careful with what you manage to scrape together.

[Well, that cleared that up, but it also let him know this young man was from somewhere he wasn't himself familiar with. A half smile at that and a shake of his head.]

Being greedy won't help any of us, and like it or not, we're stuck here together. I've got enough for myself, but I've got more as well, and it's better we're all in the best shape we can be in case something else comes along. The offer's there, if you want it.

[He'd be surprised where Newt was from; Newt had been, too, when he found out in the end. There was still a lot he didn't know or understand.

Something about the way the man spoke had so much authority to it that he had to hum. He'd offered to show someone how to cure meat to help it last, and he could have used some himself. Plus, he knew that working as a group could make or break a situation like this. He had first-hand experience.] Alright then, Steve. I'm starting a movement to get as much meat cured as we can before it starts going off.

If you know how, that's a pretty good idea. I've got a lot so far, but I'll admit that storage techniques beyond cooking aren't my forte. Stockpiling seems like the best plan for now until we know what we can expect.

[The kid made his decisions quickly, and seemed to have a mind that worked behind that incredibly youthful face. Steve wasn't one to judge a book by its cover, though, so if he said he knew what he was doing, well... why the hell not?]

Good that. We can't keep relying on handouts. [Not only because they could stop at any time, but they couldn't exactly trust whoever was giving out food in the first place. Newt didn't mind working with other people in the same boat as him, but his trust wasn't limitless.] We'll need to find salt.

[Smart kid. It helped him to know that if he was going to be stuck here for god knows how long, there were people here that had skill sets that could be useful as a whole. Civilians with training. Not a bad thing to have, considering their situation.]

Salt? I'll keep an eye out for any during rounds. How much are we talking, here?

[Newt might technically be a civilian, but he was really far from it. He'd been trained to survive and fight without even knowing it, and he'd been to places like this before, too. But he doesn't mention it, not until someone else brings it up first.]

To cute the meat. Usually need 'nough to cover all sides of the cut meat.
