( God, but actually writing these words feels strange, no matter how necessary she knows them to be. With the work on The Door and its Fragments, with Carlisle's health, all these things which are shifting her attention, there's really only one thing she can do now. )
I'm leaving the clinic.
( There. They're out. )
Will help if needed in future.
( After all, who knows what the future in Hadriel will hold? )

[ This leaving thing sounds a little too permanent. He knows she's really busy right now with some really pressing concerns, but except for that relatively brief space of time when she was gone from Hadriel, Kate has always been the Clinic's guiding light. ]
Can't you just take an official leave of absence, instead of departing?
[ And the word in his mind, departing, causes a chill to run up his back. ]
text
( And she is. This is just something she's been mulling over for a while, pushed to the front by recent events, as well as requests from the gods which have her considering things beyond the fragments. )
Plan on focusing on the Door for now.
( And, like she said, she will help if needed. But the Clinic will be fine without her. )
text
I wish you the best of luck in examining those Door fragments. We all know how important that is!
text
(There's always too much to be done, when you're Kate. She has to find something.) )
Should be interesting.
( Who knows what they'll find out, now they're helping the gods. )
text
I'm sure it will be. In fact, I'm sure it will be fascinating. But Kate. . . you be careful, all right? When a person touches those Door fragments, that person is slammed by very powerful emotions, and it doesn't feel simply emotional, it feels like being physically smacked against a wall. You take care with those things. And ask for help if you get slammed.
{{OOC: I'm assuming this thread happens before Kate's thread in the Shard Edition Lab Mingle? But if at this point, she's already learned about the shards the hard way, feel free to have her say so! And sorry about all the edits. }}
text
Noticed that.
Sure there's worse to come.
text
As I said, you take care, Kate! Even if you're not the Clinic head anymore, you're still invaluable -- to the community, and to your friends.
[text]
all right then
who's in charge?
[text]
Whoever wants to be.
( Look, she's not appointing someone out of the blue. Y'all are gonna have to come forward. )
[text]
I don't but if Lance doesn't want it.
well. I'll talk to him. have fun with the research.
[text] dw ana is looking to let pell take over but kate doesn't know yet
Let you know if someone says something.
[text] good cuz no one wants this jerk in charge
[text] at least he knows what he's doing (':

text
( Now that things are falling into place.
And other reasons, ones which aren't hers to say, or are too personal to say. )
text
[after all, George does eight hours at the Clinic, then at least a couple at the Lab]
text
well. A desire to actually rest once in a while, to find some downtime. )
Not right now.
( And the clinic will find its way through, of that she's sure. )
text
But don't whine if I take over the place.
[which she might attempt, should no one else step forward]
text | ana said pell would step up just fyi!
That supposed to be a threat?
( Kate your jokes are barely funny when there's actual tone to them, never mind over text. )
text | okay!
A promise.
[George's jokes don't translate well, either]
text
Don't burn down the place.
text
I'll keep the "running through the halls with a lighter" to a minimum.
text
Good. Can always come back if you guys fuck it up.
( But... she actually has faith in everyone left in the clinic. )
text
If they do, we're gonna need everyone with even a little bit of experience to pitch in.
[the Null are an ever-present threat in the back of her head]
text
( She's certain it'll happen again. )
text
When.
Those fuckers.
[she, too, is certain, but she was trying to be optimistic with the "if"]
text
( May as well snark about it. )
text
All I did was make fun of them.
What were you in for?
[snarking is better than being terrified]
text
( And that's the truth. They had her straight on the list when it came out. She would have never known if not for Ignis telling her. )
Think I was a god sympathiser.
text
[she found out when Matt Murdock made his network post about it and spent twenty minutes laughing her ass off over it]
Why, cause you don't talk about them sucking 24/7?
text
( Well. It's a bit more than that, really. She will defend the gods as long as she needs to. They remain the best option right now.
And, more than that, she promised Faith she would. )
text
They really are touchy bastards.
The Null, not the gods.
[for the most part, George doesn't give a fuck about the gods either way]
text
( But at least they're more sympathetic. )
text
Never had much reason to.
text
Suppose there's not as much need, now.
( The place has far more things than it used to, after all. )
text
Nope.
I figure all the questions have been answered.
[George is relatively comfortable, at least]
text
Or dismissed.
( There's also that option. )
text
Should've included that one.
[stupid gods]
[text]
[He can't say he expected this, but it doesn't really surprise him, either. Kate has her hands in a few pots these days.]
You going to be all right?
[text]
Gonna be weird. But feels like it's time.
text
The words on his screen are tense and a little concerning, so he tries to be gentle in response. ]
I guess you're going to focus on whatever it is you've been busy with lately? Please be safe at it.
Have you chosen someone to take over?
text
But she supposes she owes this much. )
Not personally. George threatened to.
( It's a joke, and a bad one, really. George wouldn't be the worst person to take over, maybe, but Kate hasn't really said you are my successor in as many words. )
You want to?
Re: text
[ Maybe that would be fine? She's done paperwork before, and can handle more responsibility than even she thinks. Not the best choice interpersonally, maybe, she can be abrasive and argumentative and angry... hmm... they don't need a Leader the same way the Guard does, so he's debating talking to her about it before giving his unconditional support when the second message comes in.
He blinks at it dumbly for a moment before replying. ]
Me? I guess I've been around a long time... I could keep it running, at least. Handle the workers and supplies. The rest, though, what's the word you used? Administration?
text
Yes. Keep the guard supplied and informed. Stay on top of staff locations, respond to events when necessary. Organise first aid courses. Things like that.
Re: text
It's the organization of multiple sites -- do they currently schedule people on all islands? he'd want to if they're all being indicated as places to go for help, but they're definitely too shorthanded to do so right now -- and potentially having to wrangle existing staff that worries him, as he's not a particularly authoritative figure, but.
When his response finally comes, he's fairly confident in it. ]
I can do it. I want to, although I may have to delegate a bit. And should probably ask if anyone has an objection or thinks they're better suited.
text
Well, it was enough rebuilding the clinic and the guard headquarters after the invasion. Not surprising she never did get around to that particular plan. )
Good. If you need anything, I'm here.
Re: text
Pell thinks about that, if there's anything specific about the job he doesn't already know, at least in the abstract. He knows where their records are. Where the staff schedule is posted, their on call list for emergencies, is familiar with the helpers for supplies and security. After two and a half years, he should know what's done to run the place, but... ]
I'm sure questions will come up along the way. For now I'll just jump in, I think, call a meeting... thank you, Kate. For all your work.
text
( He's got the right idea. And she doesn't think he'll need luck, because the staff have always been good, but she wishes it anyway.
It's going to be strange, not being there any more. But it's for the best. )
