Well, there are shinigami, but they don't seem to take the kind of actively malicious interest in human well-being you're implying. But I haven't seen any evidence of any shinigami here.

They're also known as death gods. And they're fairly useless, in my experience - I had one working for me once, and it couldn't even keep watch properly.

Even if you had researched them, it probably wouldn't have been accurate. The folklore that exists about shinigami isn't entirely on the mark to what I observed.

Yeah, well lore only works so well half the time. Half the crap's either lost in translation or you end up with something that's been screwed with and come out different over time.

No, mostly it had information that I wanted. Once I had that, I thought it might be useful to keep around. Shinigami can't be seen by humans unless certain conditions are met.

[Hence why he'd assigned Sidoh as lookout - Mello and his crew could see and speak with him, but anyone who hadn't touched the notebook couldn't. Sidoh was effectively invisible to anyone but them.]

Considering the fact that a shinigami is directly responsible for enabling - quite literally - one of the single worst mass murderers in recorded history? I'd hardly consider questioning one for information on the same par as tinkering with black magic.

I would imagine so, but I only dealt with the one. It would be unwise to try to extrapolate what all shinigami are like based on that limited interaction.
