Well, that's just- [Fear heaves out a giant sigh, pursing his lips at the end of it and glancing over his phone again, skimming through Hope's post.] -that's just cheating.

[But pouting never solved anything, so Fear makes a snap decision and quickly comes up with an alternative.]

Here, I'll tell you what: you come get things for me instead of that idiot. Find things that make you afraid, scare your friends with them, I don't care. Then, you put them on my altar, and I'll give someone my blessing.

It's much better than Hope's. Just so you know.

[He offers her a thin smile.]

Failure. I made you see your failure. Everyone around you, disappointed. Your enemy, victorious. Your arm... well.

[There's a pause. His own gaze flickers down toward her hand, as if remembering the pain it had caused her. After a moment, Fear turns his gaze back up toward the Inquisitor, but his expression is humorless: older, somehow, the earlier traces of his lightheartedness gone.]

I scared you, Cecily. And I can do it again.

Everyone is afraid of something. [ Cecily scoffs, because it's easier to be scathing than honest, particularly when she's feeling more vulnerable by the minute. ] I may be worried about those things in concept, but none are true. They aren't real. You may be here and very, very real, but you are no god.

[ Corypheus had been said to be a god, but he was only playing at one. Fear and Hope are just the same.

So she tells herself. She has to believe it. ]

Your cheap tricks are only the stuff of make believe.

If you really believed that, then you wouldn't be afraid at all.

[Fear offers, amicably.]

And I felt it, back then. Your fear. My cheap tricks are still real enough to provoke a reaction, apparently.

You're over-simplifying it. [ Her brow twitches. ] Maybe you don't understand human fear as well as you claim.

[ Human, or otherwise. There are bound to be other types of prisoners taken in, she knows, though she can't claim to have met any off the top of her head. ]

A child leaping from behind a tree might cause a reaction, but it isn't any true fear. You're just the same.

Fear is fear.

[Simply.]

Cheap tricks do the job just as well as a nightmare. I gain power either way, and I care about that far more than any integrity you think that I should be upholding.

[ Well. That he can gather power from just about anything that scares, startles, or terrifies them... is concerning.

... So, then, what is the blessing you're offering?

Fear. Or rather- the ability to make someone else feel it.
