I've set up a pawn shop next to the clinic.

Like everything else, it's on the barter system. Inventory will probably change depending on what I find and what sells. What I have should be easy to find, the shop will stay clean and organized. Rare stuff stays behind the counter with me.

If there's something you want that I don't have, ask. I might be able to get it. Just don't get too picky, this is still Hadriel.

( okay, it's not untrue. they're not pleasant. it's just not the whole truth either. )

[But that doesn't mean he and Seth haven't been each other's unruly patients from time to time.]

Most I know about playing doctor is patching up my brother while he screams in my face. [A small hint of wry humor tinges Richie's face.] You get screamers?

( Eh. Pissy pawn shop customers are probably little different. Although there's probably less chance of malpractice lawsuits. )

Can't think of any here. ( Back home, though? Well. )

You've got a brother?

Yeah, he's great. Been a team since we were kids, always had each other's backs.

[There's pride in his voice slightly weighed down by the heft of memory.]

You got family?

( The twitch of a smile that tugs at the side of her mouth should be an answer before the question even leaves his mouth. It's a strange kind of pain to be this many years removed from the last of her family dying, where she can feel the happiness and the ache that comes from the gaps left in her life. )

Died a while ago.

( It's not something she exactly talks about, but then, it's not something often asked either. There's no point in lying about it if someone's gonna be direct. )

Shit. I'm sorry.

[And he means it. Richie's never been great with people, but he understands family. Well, the family that means something. The ones that you are supposed to trust who end up being untrustworthy can die in a fire.]

Were you close?

( That's... probably an understatement, really. Close is for people who talk to their family regularly, who have lives independent of one another. For people who don't grow up with access to one another's minds as though they were their own. All of which is too much to express in any verbal way, so all she says is; )

Aye. Used to live together.

As adults? Must have been a terror sometimes. Seth and I can't [Seth's not here but goddammit he's not dead. Richie will use the present tense.] go a week without getting in a fistfight.

( Oh there were plenty of reasons that it was a terror, but fistfights weren't a big part of that. )

Had moments. ( Who put the empty milk carton back in the fridge, get out I have a girl coming over, that kind of thing. ) What's he like?

He's a real talker. Likes people. [Richie gives a small, hollow laugh.] Short.

A lot of shit I'm not. My uncle used to say we were a perfect hand.

[There's both melancholy and pride in his voice.]

Isn't everyone to you? ( Jesus, Katherine. If she actually knew how to inflect, it'd actually sound like the joke it was meant to be. )

Yin and yang or summat?

( she knows a thing or two about that. )

[The beginning of a smile forms on Richie's face yet never quite finishes. He's always enjoyed being tall, and as long as no one calls him a yeti he's good.]

In terms of balancing each other out, yeah. But there's nothing exactly spiritual about it.

( One day, maybe. You'll have to be covered in snow first.

For a moment, Kate considers pretending she doesn't know what he means, but that would only draw things out unnecessarily. )

Were smart. Friendly. ( A lot of things she wasn't. ) Good at smiling. ( Okay, all the things she wasn't. )

[The last attribute in turn makes what started as a smile grow. Or well, as close to smiling as he's going to get at the moment. It's only a small movement of the mouth, but it's there. Yet the expression stirs something inside of him that he can't quite place, lying somewhere between empathy and regret.]

He sounds cool.

[Present tense.]

You're smart though. With the clinic and all that. Wouldn't want a stupid person poking me with stuff.

( He was cool. Very cool. A bit of a twat at times, too obsessed with their parents' murders, but she wouldn't have traded him for the world, still thinks she should have died in his place. )

Just worked hard. ( She never did take to academics in the same way. But- ) Seemed like the right way to remember him.

( Do something that would probably have suited him far more, really. )

[It's not easy to talk about the past sometimes, Richie knows that firsthand. He's okay with letting the conversation falter between them, but there seems to be one more important thing to do.]
