...It can’t be…
...a nightmare…failed...
...couldn’t have… died…

[He’s muttering to himself, so only a few stray words are clear enough to be heard, at first. He hadn't intended those to be heard, necessarily, as he's checking that the phone is even on. Then, he clears his throat and speaks normally.]

Kain Highwind of the Guard reporting in. What is the current situation with the demons? I can… [He pauses, more mentally disoriented than anything. The reality of the situation is still sinking in, the memories of being possessed are… deeply unsettling. Not again. He can’t believe he’s lost himself again.] I can go anywhere I’m needed to continue our fight.

[Sigh. Well, there it is. He's in a bit of denial over what happened, but he knows deep down the truth of the matter. He'd been possessed, and... killed. Shadow, that hedgehog had ended his suffering. For now, he’ll throw himself into fighting, a warrior above all else. Mental distress will just have to get shoved deep down inside. But there is… something else bothering him. He belongs to the air, to the wind. He wants to feel that breeze on his face, to see the sky change in color. He’ll even take overcast if he could just see clouds again. The withdrawal is real.]

This is unrelated, but… How can everyone withstand a place without a sky for so long, anyway? Does anyone know if there's some way to see it again, even for a few moments?

[That's... pretty weird, and he's from a world of pretty weird things.]

Ah, all right, so you've at least seen images of it. [The books make sense. He has no idea what movies or cartoons are, but that's beside the point.] Would you ever want to see it, if given a chance?

Sure I would.

[He lifts his shoulders in an incremental shrug. He already has, in some respects. There's a photo sequestered away in his pocket that's proof to that precise conclusion, even if he can't remember it.

It ain't ever gonna happen in any permanent sense, though.]

Maybe someday you'll get a chance. We can't possibly stay in this cave forever... Right? There must be a surface to this place. Though it sounds like no one has seen it... Yet.

[He's still not been here long enough to fully lose his resolve about that, though the more time that passes, he is getting... concerned.]

Your guess is as good as mine, pal. For all we know, we could be in our very own pocket dimension.

[He sounds pretty unperturbed, all things considered.]

That almost wouldn't surprise me, considering the world I just came from and how it was arranged. At least that world had a sky, though.

[And ok, it's not quite on topic but he's gotten curious enough to ask.]

So... Are talking skeletons very common where you're from?

[Aaaaaand there it is. He should start timin' it and calculate the average for how long people can go before bringin' it up. Sans has long since learned to roll with it, and so he does, lifting a shoulder in an easy shrug.]

Everybody's a monster where I come from, but the only skeletons around are me and my bro.

It seems as if there ought to be more skeletons than that...

[At least it had taken Kain some time to get around to asking. But hm, that's interesting he says that...]

I may have met someone else from your world... another monster, she likes to collect stuff.

[She acquired quite the heap of "stuff" when all manner of "stuff" was fallin' in from the Door. Includin' a whole mess of pages he don't feel much like gettin' into.]

Yeah, she's a friend of mine. She's cool.

Yes... she seems friendly. I found one of my items from home among that pile of things...

[But this brings up an interesting fact, one he'd not really though of as possible.]

So it's possible for more than one person to be drawn here from the same world, then?

[The idea that multiple people from the same world couldn't all end up here hadn't really occurred to him. Though he hadn't banked on people stemmin' from different points in time.]

My bro's here too. Couple kids we know. Not all of 'em remember the same things, but we all know who's who.

[Kain has yet to see anyone he recognizes, and just kind of figured it was... very random, whatever the gods chose to do. It's interesting to know that this is possible... In the war he was just in, there were typically a couple of people from the same world.]

That must ease the uncertainty of being in an unfamiliar place, having people that you know here... But have some of you lost your memories?

[That's always a great concern, really.]

But if you must know, yes, I am speaking from experience. I've recovered the most important of my memories, but some, I'm sure are lost for good.

Memory loss is no joke.

[Heh. That one actually is somethin' of a joke. He's certainly grinning enough for it to count as one, though that could just be his face. (Spoilers: it's definitely just his face.)]

But - nah. We just all got picked up from different times.

[Sorta, anyway. Close enough.]

It can be very troubling, especially to lose all memories of your home world, not knowing where you came from, or the names of anyone you knew... It's not easy regaining them, but I'd rather know than not.

[Because vaguely knowing he'd done bad things, but not knowing what, exactly, had been very frustrating. He's glad he's not going through all of that again.]

Ah, I see... that still must pose its own difficulties. Has it caused much trouble among all of you?

[He's not so sure he'd want to hear of the future at all, if someone came from such a time. And it would be hard dealing with someone from the past, not aware of what would happen...]

[That's about as elaborate an answer as you're gonna get Kain, sorry. Sans ain't really one for sharing personal stories. Besides, talkin' to amnestic members of the guard is much more intriguing all around.]

Might wanna talk to the people 'round here. Some of 'em have magic that might help you out some.

[Kain sighs, not sure how he feels about that. The memories he does have aren't exactly the most pleasant.]

I don't know that I'd want to tamper with my mind like that. The memories would be of a near-endless war, anyway... so perhaps they're better forgotten.

[He don't confirm or deny it. Sure, he's adjusted. He's spent most of his life adjustin' to something or another. No point in refutin' or confirmin' it either which way.]

Well, just puttin' it out there. You got options, if you end up missin' whatever it is you're missin'.

[Does he even really miss it that much? It's... really hard for him to say. Kain would probably have to spend a while thinking it over to decide.]

Options are always worth having. I'm not sure if some of them are even things I'd want to remember... but I'll keep it in mind, anyway.

Well, y'never know. Lots of things are possible here in Hadriel. I'm guessin' it's part of the city's charm.

[Kain is definitely wary of regaining long lost war memories. Though it's still... worth knowing that something could be done, if he needed it.]

I have yet to see any charm to this place, so I'll have to take your word for it. What else is possible, anyway? I've seen dragons and demons so far...

Zombies, once. That was a fun time.

[He's certainly smilin' enough to hint as such, even if it really weren't much of a good time at all.]

But hey, sometimes you get some nice stuff. The whole place was full of rainbows and lollipops for a few days.

Zombies are a nuisance... I'm not sure I'd ever be able to consider them fun...

[He stares with uncertainty about the other thing. It's true, he'd at least received some items from home, which was... mostly good.]

Are you serious? That would have been... different. Colorful. Not terrible, though, I suppose.

Got kinda loud after a while, but a guy like me learns pretty quick how to sleep through anything.

I could imagine... I could see that you have to get used to a lot of disruptions very quickly in a place like this.

[Nah, he usually gets it ~~but this mun is dense at 3 am sorry~~ so chalk it up to him just not knowing WHAT THE HELL to expect, seriously, it's disorienting and weird and he's willing to believe anything is possible.]
