[Just audio from Cal this time. Short, sweet, and to the point. He's not up to much else after the conversation he just had with Flick. But he has a question, and he needs an answer. At least he's trying.]

If I had a question, how responsive are these so-called gods?

[A few moments later, he sends another audio message, directly to Pell and no one else.]

I won’t be coming home for the next few days. Ask Flick why. He needs me to not be there for a while. He probably needs you too.

I've uh, talked to Hope and Delight a lot, and Fear and Confusion some too. As a general rule they're all pretty okay to talk to as long as you're not a total jerk, but it kinda' depends what you want to talk to them about for like... How successful you might be.

[And he definitely suggests the former two for any requests, for several reasons.]

How interesting that everyone is suggesting different gods to speak to.

Well, I mean, we all probably have kind of... Different experiences with them, I guess.

I'm sure you do. Most of them seem to like the other less hopeful ones. I wonder what that says.

[He gives a small grin that isn't quite amused, but there's some humor though.]

Yeah, I've uh, noticed a lot of people here seem to not be too into the whole hope and delight thing. For some reason.

[He's never quite gotten the disdain for Hope in particular, but that's not really the point here.]

Did you um, have something specific you needed to talk to one of the gods about, though? Some of them are kind of better for some things than others.

It certainly must say something about them. [Or something about the gods who'd brought them here.]

Yes, I do. [He's not sharing what it is, though.]

[He can read that hint loud and clear, so he won't pry. Instead--]

Okay, well, um... If there's something you need or want, you'd probably have to make a deal and I'd definitely suggest Hope or Delight for that. They're both really fair and it's not like what they'd want you to do would hurt anyone.

If you're more like, looking for information or need to ask a question or something, it's worth a shot to ask Fear. Just be careful and, you know. Think twice about agreeing to anything or whatever.

I wouldn't um, personally ask any of the other gods anything, but I've heard Tranquility's easy to get along with and I know people trade with Rage a lot. Confusion's kind of hard to deal with and I haven't talked to Sorrow much.

[But hopefully that'll help.]

I think that's the most helpful anyone's been so far.

What sort of things do they ask for?

[He laughs a little at that.]

Cool, awesome. I aspire to be helpful.

[He's saying it jokingly, but he means it.]

Uh, well, I know Hope usually asks for people to like... Make other people feel hopeful. Delight usually wants people to be happy so she's pretty easy to negotiate with; she traded us coffee in return for us making and serving it, since people would be happy enough getting coffee that it'd be worth it to her. I know Em trades telling her about happy memories to get fabric.

Rage's got a deal in place where you trade her dead monsters for bullets, and she's also given out stuff in exchange for pissing people off. I don't um, know any details about deals with the others, but it's pretty safe to guess they'd want you to do something that makes you or other people feel the emotion they like so they get energy.

[Which is a lot of why he doesn't suggest trading with Fear or Rage especially, even if he gets along fine with Fear in conversation.]

It shows. [That's the closest Cal is going to get to actually saying "thank you."]

About what I expected, I suppose. And somehow still surprising. The place is much fairer than I'm used to. [In a way even better than fair, maybe.] What are they using that energy for, I wonder? When will the coup begin and who will rule them then? And what will the new king do with us?

[He'll totally take it.]

Nooooo idea on that last part, but um, I think they need at least a baseline of energy just to stay alive. And then if they want to do their magic they need more.

Fitting, I suppose. But I don't appreciate being used.

Yeah, not gonna argue with you on that.

[He doesn't mind it so much from some of the gods, especially those he gets along with or whose emotions aren't negative, but others he's really not that happy about being a battery for.]

I didn't think so. It seems to be the common sentiment in most places.

[A pause]

What's your name?

Yeah, I think it is, but uh... Kind of to varying extremes.

[To put it delicately.]

Chris. What's yours?

Isn't that the same everywhere?

[Chris. That sounds familiar.]

Cal. [Sigh] You don't happen to know Pell, do you? [Everyone does, this is hardly a stretch.]

I guess generally, yeah. Though the kind of uh, extremes people can go to here aren't exactly the sort of thing that happens in my world.

[He smiles a little at the question.]

Yeah, I've known him for awhile. Is he a friend of yours?

What is the sort of thing that happens in yours?

[Pell makes everyone smile. It's magical, really.]

Friend is close enough, I suppose. He was quite distraught when you left.

Well um, no magic, I guess is a big one. Though there probably is magic and it's just like, super rare, but that's a whole different thing.

[He winces a bit at that next comment, though.]

As uh, much as it's nice that people cared when I disappeared for awhile, I'm um... Really sorry it upset him that much.

[And that goes for other people too; he does feel pretty loved, but also pretty guilty about distressing anyone even though it wasn't something he could control.]

There's always magic somewhere. Even if it might not seem like it.

[Uncomfortable, but whether or not it was necessary, at least he knew how Chris felt about it now. Not that he expected one of Pell's friends would be th type to hurt people, but, well. Cal was, and Pell loved him.]

It isn't your fault. And he doesn't blame you, I'm sure. He couldn't blame anyone for anything.
