[Maketh's face is all business. If her authority has been questioned, then obviously the solution is to prove that she is doing everything possible to make the Guard as strong and efficient as it can be. She holds up a large rifle to the screen. Some of you might recognize it as Lilith's sniper rifle. Others might simply note that it's the gun that Maketh tends to tote around everywhere.]

I am looking for someone with training in long-range weaponry who would be willing to assist me in mastering this weapon. I never had official sniper training in my world. I would like this error to be corrected.

You could have just asked. [Not that Rey actively advertises her experience in sniping. But still.]

[Maketh brightens.]

I hadn't realized you were trained in this as well. Would you be willing to help me?

Are there suitable facilities for that kind of training here?

[Lee's of course aware of the guard and the armory but was not aware there was anything akin to a gun range]

No, but there is space for training in the caves.

Is that safe? What about the risk of ricochet?

It can be minimized by placing sandbags and scouting the area carefully beforehand. I would certainly not practice anywhere near the city.

Uh, just gonna jump in for a sec and say you better have some earplugs or something if you're gonna shoot in a cave. Speaking from experience here.

[She gives him a little smile.]

That's a good point. Do you know where I could find any?

[He gives a grin back and a small wave, even if he has to answer no.]

No idea, but they can't be that hard to make. Find anything made of foam or something similar and just cut it the right shape.

I was actually concerned with your own safety, Maketh. I of course assumed you would take any and all precautions to not endanger anyone else.

I will speak with Emily. I imagine she will have something suitable in the sewing shop.

[A pause.]

How have you been? We haven't spoken for a while.

[Maketh isn't sure what to make of that.]

Why?

Yeah, probably; you might also be able to find some broken headphones or something that'll be good enough.

[He gives a small shrug at the question and another smile.]

I dunno; good, I guess. Kind of settled, finally. How about you?

Of course. Are you looking to master sniper tactics as well, or just the use of the gun? How is your vision, by the way? You're not color blind, are you?

I'm a doctor. I've made a career of worrying about potential injury.

[It is also in his general disposition to care. But he doesn't like being so forward about that fact.]

I know how to use the weapon adequately. [Maketh lifts her chin.] Adequate is no longer sufficient. I have not had my eyes tested for quite some time. Fair. I am not color blind.

That's...good, I suppose. Even under the circumstances.

[She pauses.]

I'm worried. Things are becoming--uncertain. I don't like not knowing what we face.

Oh. I see.

[Maketh considers him for a moment.]

You don't need to worry about me.

[Lance is not pleased in the slightest about this post, and he can't help but wonder--and worry--that it has something to do with his clashes with Maketh recently. He might have majorly screwed up, and that thought makes him incredibly unsettled.

He takes some time before he responds, both to make sure he chooses the right thing to say and because he's watching other conversations. He's very aware that these discussions have an audience, but he's noticed that not everyone seems to keep that in mind; that could--and has--worked to his advantage.

So he decides carefully on what to say, sounding conversational and mild when he does so.]

I have a friend who's a sniper. It's not a skill that can be mastered easily.

[And he doesn't at all like that it's one she's interested in, especially since the thing that had made him nervous about her in the first place was a similarity in outlook to Broadsky, who had used his sniping skills to become a serial killer doling out what he believed to be justice.]

Perhaps I don't need to. But would you allow me the indulgence of continuing to do so?

Its in my hardwiring, I'm afraid.

Mm, shouldn't be hard to make one. It'll be easier to judge your field adaptability based on your range of vision. Most rifles come with scopes, but some of the best snipers don't even need one.

[She huffs. There's something in Doctor Sweets' expression that she doesn't like. The judgement there. As if what she's suggesting is entirely unreasonable, though he's too polite to say it outright.]

Are you suggesting I am incapable of learning it?

[It takes Maketh a moment to decide how to respond. Finally she nods.]

All right, Doctor Rosen.

This one has automatic targeting software. It's helped me utilize the weapon. [Maketh lowers her eyes briefly. Stars, she misses Lilith.] I cannot rely on that crutch any longer.

Now, can I ask what brought on your sudden interest in long-range weapons? Do you feel there might be a new threat?
