[Maketh's face is all business. If her authority has been questioned, then obviously the solution is to prove that she is doing everything possible to make the Guard as strong and efficient as it can be. She holds up a large rifle to the screen. Some of you might recognize it as Lilith's sniper rifle. Others might simply note that it's the gun that Maketh tends to tote around everywhere.]

I am looking for someone with training in long-range weaponry who would be willing to assist me in mastering this weapon. I never had official sniper training in my world. I would like this error to be corrected.

Is that safe? What about the risk of ricochet?

It can be minimized by placing sandbags and scouting the area carefully beforehand. I would certainly not practice anywhere near the city.

Uh, just gonna jump in for a sec and say you better have some earplugs or something if you're gonna shoot in a cave. Speaking from experience here.

Oh, hello, Chris.

[She gives him a little smile.]

That's a good point. Do you know where I could find any?

[He gives a grin back and a small wave, even if he has to answer no.]

No idea, but they can't be that hard to make. Find anything made of foam or something similar and just cut it the right shape.

I will speak with Emily. I imagine she will have something suitable in the sewing shop.

[A pause.]

How have you been? We haven't spoken for a while.

Yeah, probably; you might also be able to find some broken headphones or something that'll be good enough.

[He gives a small shrug at the question and another smile.]

I dunno; good, I guess. Kind of settled, finally. How about you?

That's...good, I suppose. Even under the circumstances.

[She pauses.]

I'm worried. Things are becoming--uncertain. I don't like not knowing what we face.

Isn't it always kind of an unpredictable mess here?

[He's guessing she means something a lot more specific than just the general uncertainty of Hadriel, though.]

Is there something going on? Or just like, the whole thing with the gods' adventuring party decision?

The gods cannot be trusted. If they bring something back with them or simply decide they need more power, then we will have to defend ourselves.

[Maketh sighs.]

I am being--thorough.

You still don't trust the gods by now? I mean sure, not liking them's one thing, but by now I think it's pretty clear they don't actually want anything permanently bad to happen to us. Not even Fear or Rage.

[Chris has decided at this point that they've proven themselves, and all of them--the people here and the gods--have a lot better chance of dealing with everything if they're working together.]

Of course I don't. We are a power source to them. Nothing more and nothing less.

[She says it quite simply.]

They'll say whatever they want to gain our cooperation. It means nothing. Their actions speak for themselves.

Their actions have been pretty not-terrible recently.

[But he shrugs a little; he's not going to try to convince her otherwise. She has plenty of good reasons to feel how she does.]

But I mean, being prepared's not a bad thing either way, so... I wish I could help on the shooting thing, but I so haven't even touched a sniper rifle. I was pretty good with a hunting rifle, though.

[And a shotgun, and his handgun, and probably any other gun he happens to touch, but still.]

You and I both know that won't last.
