[ In light of recent events and the overall nature of life in Hadriel - what with death and the Door making everything extremely unpredictable - Emily decides to Do Right by everyone who helped her with her deal with Hope. ]

thanks to everybody who pitched in, we now have a coffee cart again

[ victoryfanfare.mp3 ]

if i die or disappear or whatever, or if there's a battle or a city split again, it could get lost or destroyed. so in the interest of making sure everyone with good taste has coffee for however long we're here, at least one other person should have coffee cart responsibilities

it's not hard. you can go whatever route you want, just make sure everyone gets a chance to have some so that hope keeps getting power and the cart keeps getting restocked. no prior experience required, though im pretty sure everyone can appreciate a skilled barista

anyway, i'm starting my route tomorrow at the sewing shop. if you're interested, lmk here or tag along or whatever, just let me know somehow

you're welcome

Right. Okay. We need to get in front of this and make a plan. I'm the one who has to put my neck out there so I'm the one who has to talk about options.

If they've got Tranquility, they're probably using him in their machines as a power source until we get there. Now, if we can forget that this is all Sorrow's fault for a minute here, we've got to come up with a plan and he has some pretty good ones, so- here goes I guess.

First option is do nothing. We sit on our thumbs and probably let Tranquility die, but it means that we won't be handing over their ally and it means that we won't be playing into whatever trap they're setting for us. As much as I don't want to advocate for this one... well, if they're setting a trap and they want me there, I don't like my chances of walking away from it. This is probably the safest option, but- damn.

Second option is to go ahead with the transfer. I go with some of you, we give them Delight, we hope that they don't trap or kill us during the whole ordeal and get three gods for the price of one. I don't like this at all, but this is probably the best way to get Tranquility back safely- if we don't do this one then I can't guarantee that he'll make it out of there.

And the third was presented by Rage herself. If we assume that they're going to trap us, we go there and trap them instead. Rage can disguise herself to look like Delight and we go through with the transfer. They'll be expecting Delight to work with them- I hope- and so we'll launch a surprise attack during the exchange with Rage's help. We take them out, save Tranquility, keep Delight. If they're expecting this then we lose, big time- but if they're not, then we could win out more here than otherwise.

I don't... I don't really like any of these options. There's risking myself and then there's being stupid- but what other option do we have? I'll hear your concerns or alternate ideas if you have them, as well as any volunteers to go with me.

It doesn't need to be said that if we die at the meeting point... well, Hope won't be able to gather our essences or your bodies for a resurrection when it's so deep into the Null territory. For all intents and purposes, a death there would be permanent. Keep that in mind while you make your choice.

Hey everyone, this is Peter. I'm, uh... Just lemmie-- Okay, I'm gonna preface this with "I'm fine", which... probably still sounds concerning to anyone who knows me. Uh, with good reason, but I promise that I really am fine.

Okay? Okay.

So... okay, you know those freaky tentacle snails that attacked those guys a little while ago? Yeah, they're still around. I ran into a few of them outside the city, and by 'ran into' I mean 'was totally ambushed by'. Like, I was just minding my own business and they jumped out all "Blahhhhgh!" and I was like "oh snap!!", so yeah, we fought a little and I got bit and, y'know, it hurt. And I know the one guy was all "hey call for back up if you see any" and I totally would have if I'd had a chance, but I didn't? I mean, not because I didn't want to, it's just like, in the moment I was a little distracted by trying to get away from the things, and I didn't have my web shooters on me because they're possessed by demons right now? So I wasn't gonna even try to catch one of those guys without my gear, so I left. My toothbrush tried to stab me this morning, I'm not dealin' with this on top of that today. I'm done, I'm tapping out!

Anyway, if anyone else ends up fighting these guys, go for the eyes if you can. They're kind of hard to hit because of all the tentacles, but if you can take their eyes out it slows them down. They're still dangerous, though, like, they will absolutely still try to fight you, so just like, don't stick around if you can help it. In fact, just don't go outside the city by yourself. Don't go anywhere by yourself. Y'know, buddy system up if you can. I don't know how many of these dudes are still out there, but I have a feeling that they're not going away any time soon.

Oh right, I did manage to break a chunk off one of their shells. I don't know how helpful that's gonna be? But I've got it at the lab if anyone wants to see it, assuming you can pry it away from Newt. I also got a photo! It's... not a very good one, but uh, I'll put this somewhere, I guess.

[Connor is normally all 'important business' when he talks to the network, and to be fair that's going to be a part of this broadcast. However, there's something much more important to address first.

So the broadcast starts off by showing a clear bin--some sort of small tupperware or plastic container with damaged edges and no lid--filled with water, in which sits a glass shark. But it only sits for a few seconds, then gives a little wiggle like it's doing its best to swim, bumping its glass nose gently into the side of the container. It continues this still, then little swim, then still again pattern for a few repetitions until Connor picks up the phone to address the network properly.

As usual he has a hat covering his LED, but he's back to the beanie he'd bedazzled a few months ago; it has a big dipper on it, and it's awesome. Connor looks a little brighter than usual, even if it might be hard to tell, because he loves this event so far omg.]

Has anyone else noticed strange behavior from objects around them?

[And has it been this cute for anyone else, because this is cute and he wants the shark to stay this way forever please. Not really having many possessions or even furniture is working out for him this event.

But more seriously--]

It's been a few months since I last addressed the network about acquiring medical supplies for those who aren't human or near-human, and it seems we've had several new arrivals in that time who may need them. However, because these needs might be very individualized, those with specific requirements should make them known in advance so we can try to get any necessary supplies in stock.

If you're concerned about privacy you could respond anonymously, or leave a note or message at the Lab. Otherwise, just contact me with details of what you might need.

[That all said, broadcast over; Connor has to go come up with a name for his temporarily animate shark.]

[He supposes this is as good a time as any considering the events of the past few days and Rosen's recent post, so...

Lance is looking more put together than he has recently, although he hasn't completely returned to the formal look; he has bothered with a suit but not with a tie, and his hair's getting slightly out of control and distinctly curly. He also looks a bit like he's either gotten too little sleep or too much, although his voice is steady and even and he certainly sounds more professional than he did in his last post.]

Due to recent events, and in followup to Dr. Rosen's announcement, I think this is a good time to reiterate that should anyone be in need of someone to speak to about anything that may be bothering them, I'm always available for counseling or just to talk.

[He's gotten the impression this is something a whole lot of people here probably need, and it's important to make sure they're aware of the option and don't have to go hunting for information on who to contact.]

My name is Dr. Lance Sweets and I'm a clinical psychologist, which, for those whose worlds don't have such a profession, means that I work with helping individuals work through any mental or emotional issues they might be having. Although I've counseled patients on a range of subjects, my primary work has been with the FBI and therefore often in the area of coping with witnessing or experiencing traumatic events.

[Which is fortunate, since there seems to be a lot of that here. Which, itself, is unfortunate.]

Meetings can be as formal or informal as you're comfortable with, and where we speak can also be decided upon on an individual basis. I'm also willing to answer any questions you might have before making any agreements or arrangements.

[Because he's very aware that a whole lot of people don't get the idea of psychology at all, and he's also expecting at least a few 'aren't you twelve?' comments.]

So it's a tie.

[Delight sighs, not sounding quite her usual, delightful self. There's a scuffle, like someone pushing back a chair, and then Sorrow's voice echoes into the speaker, further off, like he's standing on the other side of the room.

'Then I decide. You all know my thoughts on the matter.']

No, [Delight counters, her voice wavering slightly. Arguing with Sorrow is always a little intimidating.] We all decide together. Tranquility doesn't want to go, and everyone else here is keeping something in place- everyone except for me.

[There's a brief silence. When Delight speaks again, her voice is hardened, resolute.]

I'm volunteering to go. They picked me. Send me alone or-

['You aren't going alone,' comes Rage's voice, protective and sure- from closer to the mic than Sorrow's had been. It's silent on Sorrow's end, something is decided without words, and Delight speaks a moment later.]

-alright, then it's settled.

[There's a slight pause, before Delight speaks directly into the mic again, her voice changing suddenly to be the cheerful and pleasant goddess that all some of you know and love.]

Did you hear that, guys? Looks like I'll be one of the ones going out! I want you all to be super happy for me the next few days, alright? I can do this for you- for all of us. And Rage is coming with me, and we're really tough! We'll be safe.

I won't let you down!

[Sato looks very serious when he appears on the screen, and at first he's close enough to the camera that it's hard to tell exactly where he is. What is clear is that although he seems uninjured, there's a bit of fairly fresh looking blood on the collar of his shirt.]

Hello again, everyone. Sadly, I have sobering news to relay. You see, for several months now, I've been followed. Wanting to assume the best, I had hoped that whoever was simply too shy to approach. Or curious, perhaps.

Unfortunately, today the creature following me decided to make his move. I was viciously attacked in the streets of this very city. Of course... he was not successful.

[Sato changes the angle of the camera enough that the scenery is familiar to those who've been to Rage's temple to trade bodies for bullets. Except this time there's a small (and also familiar to some) figure dumped in an unceremonious heap of black and red spiky fur - and blood - on Rage's altar. Shadow is, quite certainly, dead.]

I would like to say simply that the Guard should spend more effort on trying to protect the citizens from dangerous creatures like the one I fought off today. I really would.

But I can't, because from the few words I heard, he was clearly sent by the Guard.

Is this fine with you, fellow citizens of this city? That you could be followed, attacked, perhaps even held hostage or killed, at the whims of a terrible organization like this? [He shakes his head sadly.] Please, tell me what you think of this. And be sure to tell them as well. For all of our sakes.

Is anyone in Hadriel familiar with the bowyer's art?

I did not have my bow with me when I've passed through the Door, and I've spent the past few days on the hunt for a replacement. There are a few in the Armory which may suffice, but if we shall see battle I'd prefer one suited for my hand.

I can make it myself given the right tools and components, so I was simply wondering whether there was a way to obtain them. I would need certain types of wood, and animal horn and sinew would be preferable if I could lay hands on them. I'd even take some from the monsters of the caves, if any would be suitable for the task.

 [Private, to the Feanorians]

On a related subject, I was hoping to get an expert opinion on salvaging my armor. I suppose the helm's a loss, but I think the rest of it can be repaired.

Are any of you free to take a look?

[Private, to Maedhros]

Would you accompany me out if a lead looks promising? Or if not, in truth, I'm going mad from inaction.

[It's been a while since Mello's addressed the network with anything but cold, impersonal text (well, except for that one time he was possessed by a demon, but let's not dwell on that, he wasn't exactly himself), and the fact that he is now choosing this method of communication is significant - Mello does nothing without purpose. He's been here an entire year, and he has begun to slowly pull himself out of the mindset of a man with one day left to live and not much to lose. Near was right; he is better at dealing with people than he has been, and it's well past time he took steps to rectify that. He's stuck here, perhaps indefinitely, and he has, in spite of his various missteps over the past year, become a part of this community.

So when he speaks now, his tone is a measure less haughty and condescending than you might be used to seeing from him. This is, believe it or not, what an attempt at teamwork looks like.]

I've revised the introductory guide, and I've included a new attachment with a summarized history of the events that have transpired here. Please take time to review it. If anything of importance is missing, I'd like to know.

[Look at that, Hadriel. He even said please.]

I think we need better documentation of what happens to us here - not just so that we aren't forced to keep explaining things to the newcomers ad nauseam, but because our history informs who we are, collectively. And I can't help thinking that if the gods here or their so-called previous host population had left better records of what happened before, we might have been better prepared for what happened when we were attacked not long ago by the things that killed them off. Now, I'm good at collecting information, but I'm only one person, and as we've seen, the Door is unpredictable about who comes and goes. If only one person is collecting this sort of information and that person disappears, we all lose that record.

[He falls silent for a moment, thinking of Near's recent disappearance. As much as he dislikes to admit it, even to himself, it's something that has left a deep impact - deep enough, perhaps, to prompt this shift in his attitude.]

I guess ... I'm asking for your help. All of you.

[Don't make this weird, Hadriel. It takes a lot for Mello to ask for help with anything.]

So yeah, any requests? I was thinking Tetris, and maybe like, a chess game or something? I dunno. I'm open to suggestions.

Hadriel.

[His address begins in a straightforward tone. The issues of the past few months are behind them, and they've eked out survival for awhile longer. Sorrow isn't optimistic, but he's not inclined to give up, either. He makes plans, he executes them, he lets things fall into place.

Which is the reason for this.]

Now that most of you know the truth, and now that it has been shown that these creatures will truly follow us to the ends of creation, I have decided to send two of us to scout the location we left behind and intercept with the forces of the machines there. Their purpose would be to gather information- how these inorganics continue to find us, how we might be able to thwart their technology in an attempt to escape for good.

Of the eight of us, there are four pairs which work better together than others. Hope has asked me to let you decide who is to go, but I warn you to consider your options carefully. The gods who leave will not have any events until they return, so we'll throw a large one for their departure.

[Sorrow takes a deep breath. Onto the selection.]

Hope and myself could go. This would leave you without replenishing food and water, as well as limited methods of revival... Hope is valuable, and I would do everything in my power to protect him, and I can also ensure that we're not discovered.

Your second option would be Confusion and Tranquility. The two of them are our builders, and without them, the city will not be repaired and their various contributions will not be functional. Confusion would be adept at avoiding capture, though detection is another story.

Thirdly are Fear and Love. Fear... [He sighs.] Fear operates best in the shadows, though he's still weakened- however, if he leaves, it will mean that we'd be left vulnerable if attacked again, as none of the rest of us can move the city. Love themself is... well, perhaps they can be used as a distraction if Fear needs to escape.

[Sorry, Love.]

Finally, you have Delight and Rage. Since Delight is no longer maintaining the bar, your only significant losses with both of them would be the ongoing deals any of you may have with each of them. The two of them are our most accomplished fighters and would be able to wrestle themselves out of an unfavorable situation, given the power they'd take on from their final event.

[So that's that.]

I welcome any questions you may have.

[ This feels a little too similar to the post she'd made so many months ago, asking people not to enter the gods' temples as she tried to wreck havoc on the city and upon them, but now her reason is different and it feels wrong. The last thing she wants to really do is help most of the gods—the majority of them could die and she would celebrate with a wicked grin and a glass of whiskey—but not helping them out right now would also result in her own death, along with those she actually cares about.

The video that comes to life shows off one Sharon da Silva, dark circles beneath her eyes, and dark bruising visible along her brow bone, hidden only partially by bleached bangs. Her expression is tight and serious. ]

Hey, Sharon da Silva, Heather Mason, whatever the fuck you want to call me here. I know shit is kind of getting shittier but I'm going to need those of you not heading into the caves to blow shit to smithereens to start wandering and looking for foggy areas to sit your asses in. I'd recommend you take a weapon with you because it's not going to be a walk in the park. In fact, I suggest you learn to use the flashlight on your phone because once the fog goes away and the siren sounds, it gets dark as fuck and then you can't leave.

There are monsters in the fog, in the darkness, and they're not just something you're hallucinating. In fact, they likely exist because you did something horrible in your life and deserve a moment of suffering. But, that's not what this is about: you saw Fear's post and you know that if he doesn't get enough of his particular emotion, we're all probably toast.
