nonscriptum: and I'm freaking Lewis & Clark out here (one day in the woods)
[personal profile] nonscriptum
There are a bunch of new people around, so...hey, I'm Nate.

[ It's been a while since he posted to the network, but things are starting to get sticky - and not even in the comparatively fun, sweaty jungle way - around these parts and tension feels like it's ramping higher. Crackling in the air. It makes the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He's not in the city, as evidenced by the dense, green foliage at his back. His sketchbook is out, open, but he's talking with both his hands. ]

I realize we're kind of running the gauntlet right now in terms of what's being thrown at us, and we're basically getting ready for an inevitable showdown, and there are already a lot of efforts being made toward preparing.

[ Sonya - a woman he doesn't know - was proposing escape routes and manageable cover strategies for civilian types. It's a good idea to have those routes mapped sooner rather than later. ]

But I've spent a lot of time since we got here getting to know this landscape, the topography. What I'm looking for are people with actual combat experience, whether that's strategic, logistical, or something similar. Fight's gonna come to us whether we want it to or not, and weaponizing the environment is one of the best chances we have at mitigating the risks. Guerrilla warfare isn't pretty, but we have the resources for it.

[ For a moment he looks distracted, thinking of something, writing it down and talking over the act as he does so. ]

So just, um. Call in if you've got the know-how. Thanks.

Hey, guys.

[Tranquility sounds tired, worn out, a little defeated.]

Thanks for coming for me. That's not how I would've wanted it to go down, but... well, I'm here now. And at least Delight started fighting for us again there at the end. Everything she did, as bad as some of it was, was to try to keep us safe in her own misguided way.

I'm gonna miss her.

Anyway, we're kind of in a crappy position now. The Null are almost certainly gonna track her essence, the parts that ended up here. So we've gotta move, but we're running out of options and time. They've killed one of us already, and they were going to kill me. We've gotta decide how we want to play this. Your lives are on the line here, too, just as much as ours. Maybe more.

Wherever we go, the Null are gonna find us sooner or later. It kinda comes down to whether we want to try to strike against them first, or whether we want to find a more defensive location and shore up, wait for them to come to us. We have a few different options in terms of locations, some of which we've been to before and some we haven't. Thanks to a bunch of you guys, I have a lot of information about where the Null forces are, which places will be less safe or more safe, so take that into consideration.

There's a file attached to this with the info I've collected from you, and from what we already knew. Take a look at it - or don't, I'm not the boss of you - and let us know where you want to go.

Right. Okay. We need to get in front of this and make a plan. I'm the one who has to put my neck out there so I'm the one who has to talk about options.

If they've got Tranquility, they're probably using him in their machines as a power source until we get there. Now, if we can forget that this is all Sorrow's fault for a minute here, we've got to come up with a plan and he has some pretty good ones, so- here goes I guess.

First option is do nothing. We sit on our thumbs and probably let Tranquility die, but it means that we won't be handing over their ally and it means that we won't be playing into whatever trap they're setting for us. As much as I don't want to advocate for this one... well, if they're setting a trap and they want me there, I don't like my chances of walking away from it. This is probably the safest option, but- damn.

Second option is to go ahead with the transfer. I go with some of you, we give them Delight, we hope that they don't trap or kill us during the whole ordeal and get three gods for the price of one. I don't like this at all, but this is probably the best way to get Tranquility back safely- if we don't do this one then I can't guarantee that he'll make it out of there.

And the third was presented by Rage herself. If we assume that they're going to trap us, we go there and trap them instead. Rage can disguise herself to look like Delight and we go through with the transfer. They'll be expecting Delight to work with them- I hope- and so we'll launch a surprise attack during the exchange with Rage's help. We take them out, save Tranquility, keep Delight. If they're expecting this then we lose, big time- but if they're not, then we could win out more here than otherwise.

I don't... I don't really like any of these options. There's risking myself and then there's being stupid- but what other option do we have? I'll hear your concerns or alternate ideas if you have them, as well as any volunteers to go with me.

It doesn't need to be said that if we die at the meeting point... well, Hope won't be able to gather our essences or your bodies for a resurrection when it's so deep into the Null territory. For all intents and purposes, a death there would be permanent. Keep that in mind while you make your choice.

[Just ignore the fact this dingdong is clearly outside and just sort of perched on whatever bench he could manage to find. With a violin pretty clearly strapped to his back.]

Been... sort of lurking on this whole thing, I guess. But I have a question about this place in general and the people here? Is being dead and now... not being dead sort of a thing that happens here a lot or do you get attacked by whatever death squad to drag you back to the afterlife or whatever for being a fluke in the system?

Just asking... for... a friend?

[He's pausing for a brief moment, not quite sure if he should add more after this or what. But there's no reason not to, right?]

Anyone happen to have a use for a musician around here or I guess a bard in general? Been sitting around for far too long and I don't have to anymore.

Hey everyone, this is Peter. I'm, uh... Just lemmie-- Okay, I'm gonna preface this with "I'm fine", which... probably still sounds concerning to anyone who knows me. Uh, with good reason, but I promise that I really am fine.

Okay? Okay.

So... okay, you know those freaky tentacle snails that attacked those guys a little while ago? Yeah, they're still around. I ran into a few of them outside the city, and by 'ran into' I mean 'was totally ambushed by'. Like, I was just minding my own business and they jumped out all "Blahhhhgh!" and I was like "oh snap!!", so yeah, we fought a little and I got bit and, y'know, it hurt. And I know the one guy was all "hey call for back up if you see any" and I totally would have if I'd had a chance, but I didn't? I mean, not because I didn't want to, it's just like, in the moment I was a little distracted by trying to get away from the things, and I didn't have my web shooters on me because they're possessed by demons right now? So I wasn't gonna even try to catch one of those guys without my gear, so I left. My toothbrush tried to stab me this morning, I'm not dealin' with this on top of that today. I'm done, I'm tapping out!

Anyway, if anyone else ends up fighting these guys, go for the eyes if you can. They're kind of hard to hit because of all the tentacles, but if you can take their eyes out it slows them down. They're still dangerous, though, like, they will absolutely still try to fight you, so just like, don't stick around if you can help it. In fact, just don't go outside the city by yourself. Don't go anywhere by yourself. Y'know, buddy system up if you can. I don't know how many of these dudes are still out there, but I have a feeling that they're not going away any time soon.

Oh right, I did manage to break a chunk off one of their shells. I don't know how helpful that's gonna be? But I've got it at the lab if anyone wants to see it, assuming you can pry it away from Newt. I also got a photo! It's... not a very good one, but uh, I'll put this somewhere, I guess.

I'll get right to the point.

Anyone who didn't see my conversation with Hope, he recognized Harlan's picture of the creatures that attacked during the stampede. They may be the former inhabitants of this city, or their descendants, or just a species related to the one that the gods called hosts. Maybe they escaped the Null's genocide, maybe they defected, we have no way of knowing unless we can communicate with one. And the gods can speak to them.

That means if they come back, I think we should try to contain one. Take them alive but try not to get slaughtered in the process -- it sounded to me like they were scouting, and usually that means the enemy comes back in numbers and we already know their shells are very sturdy. We'll need to be ready. If anyone has ideas, now's the time. I'm really more used to killing things that don't surrender but we'll need both containment and defense.

Oh and if anyone's managed to get into those bunker-looking doors out on the way to the mountains, let me know? I'm curious if there are clues about whether or not the hosts were using them to hide from the Null. Hopefully our not being invaded means these guys aren't allied with them, but more information never hurts.

[Along with the shift in terrain comes a transmission, one hitting the network within minutes of the move.]

This is Nick Valentine. Guard, report in with your whereabouts and what you're seeing on your end. Let's get this place scoped out as quick as we can. The sooner we know what we're dealing with on this planet, the better we can adjust.

[Last time, they ended up on completely separate islands, everything having been split in ways he hadn't expected. From what he can tell, things have been rearranged again, though the setup around the Speakeasy definitely rings familiar in the back of his mind.]

For anyone else looking to help, the Guard can always use extra hands. People who don't mind sweeping the streets every now and then, who'll keep an eye on the Colosseum once a month, who can handle themselves and protect others in an emergency. We're not the cops, but someone has to keep the city safe from whatever comes in with the new arrivals, and if that's up your alley, then give me a call.

[That'll do. Time to see what this new world is like for himself. Click.]

I fell victim to one of the classic blunders- do I seriously have to read this?

[You may recognize the guy on your screen as local parkour enthusiast and history nerd Nathan Drake. What he is wearing, however, differs so resolutely from his typical "jeans and a Henley" aesthetic that the broadcast appears to be hosted by a man whose sartorial sensibilities make him look like the quintessential Harvard professor: tweed vest, bow tie and all.

He gives a pleading expression to someone out of frame, who appears to have no mercy. Nate takes a fortifying breath and continues his recitation with approximately zero enthusiasm.
]

...the most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "never challenge an FBI psychologist to deliver a line with a straight face."

[ Floki was furious. Never had he felt so passionately insulted before! It was as if everyone on these stupid Islands had been brainwashed!

He had heard several peoples views on the Gods most just called them that for ease as no one truly believe them to be deities at all, yet here everyone was, joining forces with them like loyal little followers!

No, he had had enough! Something had to be done about it. Unbeknownst to Floki, he himself would end up being a puppet to a false God here too. ]

May all your ships sink! Your sails be struck by Thor's mighty thunder and tore asunder from the pounding storms and howling winds! I dare you to cross Floki! Come, come to me so that I might shower upon you my burning rage! False Gods and false people are one in the same, you're all going to die in your quest of lies and unholy adventure!

[ He spat off to the side. Oh, he was enraged! Never before had he seen so many people willing to engage in blasphemy, it was enough to send him into a fit of rage-fueled murder!

Gods help anyone who crossed him and his homemade boat today, he was in no mood to tolerate anyone's bullshit. Especially if it had to do with the current activities of the City. ]

[For those who frequent the tops of the various climbable buildings in Hadriel, they might recognize that this broadcast is from the roof of one of them due to the angle; otherwise it's just a rapidly darkening cloudy sky for a backdrop, sun setting and rain clearly threatening to roll in at any time.

It's pretty, and that may or may not be the reason why Connor is out on a roof in the first place, but it's definitely not the point of this impromptu broadcast. He's just been wondering some things, and it's in his nature to actively search out answers rather than waiting for them to come to him, so he's decided to just go for it.]

Hello everyone; my name is Connor, and I just arrived a few days ago.

[Always good to start with introductions, and also to avoid saying exactly how many days or hours it's been since a given time when pretending to be human. He's getting a little better at this.]

I've been catching up on the situation at hand, and although the context is somewhat different, there are parallels to current events in my world that are difficult to ignore. Before I arrived, we were dealing with what might be the beginning of a civil war between humans and machines.

[He's trying to tread carefully, projecting enough genuine interest without sounding over-invested. He's just asking, after all, nothing more; there's definitely no personal reason why he wants to know.]

So I'm curious; I'm aware that what the Null have done is enough reason to be against them, but does what they are play any role in your feelings toward them?

Who has technological expertise here? Mechanical or chemical engineering, electronics, programming, more than a rudimentary grasp of mathematics or physics?

I'm also looking for anything that can be broken down for parts. If you have anything that you're not using any more or that has broken, please let me know.
