[For those familiar with Clinic, it can be recognized to be the backdrop for this broadcast; it's also probably easy enough to guess that Lance has just arrived there, because he's obviously drenched. It doesn't seem to bother him any, though, except for that his slightly ridiculous hair is now definitely long enough to fall into his eyes when wet, so he has to shove some of it out of the way before he can actually see the screen.

Despite being soaked he looks a little more vibrant and relaxed than usual, although in contrast his tone is quiet and sedate for the most part.]

Is the 'raining underground' thing strange even for here, or...?

[Because he hasn't been here that long and he's heard that it's snowed before, so maybe not? But the rain is totally not the point of this post, so he continues.]

But rain aside, I'd actually wanted to ask about the caves that branch off from the main cavern. I know they're supposedly difficult to navigate and filled with monsters, but have there been any coordinated efforts to explore them? And what sort of monsters exist in them?

[He does remember Maketh telling them there are paper records on some of the monsters at the Guard post, but as far as he's concerned that's really not too helpful. Besides, he'd rather hear that the general populace has to say, and talk to them individually on this.]

[It's okay; Lance remembers meeting him back at the party when they bonded over how glorious muffins are, so although it's been awhile he's not too surprised.]

That's pretty cool. Were there clouds and everything?

[Or does water just fall from the ceiling? Because, you know, if it's raining underground there really is no reason to expect there to need to be clouds because magic.]

[Muffins. Right. Human faces all blend together after a while; 's hard to keep track of who he's introduced himself to and who he hasn't.]

Nah. No sky. Just water leakin' in through the ceiling.

That actually makes a lot of sense. A rain-like effect can be created in caves close to the surface by water filtering down through the ceiling of the cavern.

[Although it's not usually so dramatic. Also doesn't account for the wind or hail or lightning, but who knows if that's a thing where Sans is from too.]

I guess the storming would have to be new. It ain't rainbows, but I guess it's a change in pace.

The storming is pretty strange.

[But welcome strange; he likes thunderstorms.]

Has it happened here before?

We've gotten changes in the weather. All temporary. Once we had a day at the beach and everything.

[As long as you didn't squint too hard at the ceiling, watching the illusion warp away.]

That's... Actually a whole lot weirder than it storming.

[The beach? In a cave? Really?]

Eh. It wasn't real. Looked real nice as long as you didn't concentrate. [Maybe a bit more dismissive than the anomaly merits, but he's used to seeing things that he ain't really meant to.]

To celebrate Tranquility's arrival, I suppose.

What happened if you did concentrate?

[He also notes that last part, though doesn't comment on it; he's more interested in how anyone wouldn't think hard about the fact that there's suddenly a beach in the cave.]

The illusion went away.

[He's frank about it. 'Specially since, well, he doubts Lance is the type to couch himself in denial about what's really there. Don't seem like his style.]

That's interesting. You could see through it entirely, or just realize it wasn't real?

[He's definitely not; he tried that when he first got here, mostly because he had a lot to lose if this place weren't the dream he was hoping it to be, but it didn't take long before he gave up on that in order to face facts.]

Depended on how far you were willin' to suspend your disbelief. Sure, none of it was real. But you could fake it 'till it felt real.

[It had been obvious that it was an illusion from the start. None of the gods, however powerful, could tear them from the cave in which they were rooted entirely. Not against the Door's wishes.]

[Lance may be drawing a strange conclusion from this, but what's standing out to him is that--]

It seems a little weird that they can create all the things they do, like the buildings and the everything necessary for both parties, but couldn't bother with some water and sand.

Well, I got buried in sand for a little bit. [He hesitates for a moment. Yeah, there's still photographic evidence of that floating around. Then he adds, as though it's only just now occurred to him:]

Still not sure what it actually was, under the glamour.

So there might've been something physically there, but it wasn't sand?

[That's even weirder.]

[Sans spreads his arms wide in a helpless what-can-you-do gesture.]

You got me. Picture says it's sand, but it sure wasn't sand by the time the week was up.

[...Huh.]

Have other events been the same way, in that they rely heavily on belief?

[He's wondering how much of the gods' events are real, and how much are psychological. Is there some mental element to them that could potentially be overcome?]

Some of 'em do. When you got your backs to the wall with somethin' aiming to chow down on your marrow, 's a little hard to picture it being anything but real.

[Not to say that's, uh, happened.

(It's happened. Not fun.)]

But I think the belief's all the gods're really runnin' on. Enough illusion to make you feel what they need you to.

That's good to know. I did notice that some of the mental effects themselves can be... Ignored, at least for the most part, with enough effort.

[Such as the influence of Rage toward the end of the party. Also now he's getting ideas; someone stop him.]

Sometimes, yeah. Don't think for a second the gods can't pull a physical threat off if they like, 'cause it's happened.

[And boy, do they still all pay for it.]

I've read about the past events. Maybe a physical change, whether it's a beach or a real threat, is just more work for the gods and they avoid them if they can get away with something more illusionary instead.

Yeah. There was the whole thing with the... [He trails off, making a vague gesture with one bony hand, phalanges forming into claws.]

Things jumpin' out at us, only they weren't real. Guess Fear needed somethin' from us.

[Yeah, about that--]

There's still glitter in my apartment.

[That had been his first--and only, so far--real event, other than the parties, and it sure was... Something.]

What, y'don't like it? You don't think it spruces things up?

[He's...joking, probably, though he looks and sounds a little too cheerful about it.]

I guess it does allow for designating different rooms based on the colour of glitter in them.

[Looking on the bright side here, even though he can't muster up enough fake enthusiasm to match Sans'.]
