What... do you need help with, exactly? Being able to see is quite the vague requirement...

I need someone who can help me identify and sort my tools and building bits. I can only do so much with my fingers.

[Actually he can determine a lot about his collection of wires, cogs, and techno-scrap with just his fingers, but building things is finicky work and requires 100% accuracy if a thing is gonna work once built. Back home Karl would help, but now its just him]

I wish I could help but technology is really.. not something I'm familiar with.

I suppose I could offer... basicar help, thought?

What kind of 'experience with tech' are we talking about?

The kind that would help someone know the difference between an input and an output cable

[He could even make due if someone could just describe something to him in detail]

I know a thing or two about hooking up machines, if you want me to swing by while I'm out on patrol.

[It's about half an hour later, but knock he does, rapping on the door with his metal hand. As he waits for an answer, he wonders idly if this Whistler fellow will be able to tell what his hand is made of from sound alone. Nick doesn't have confirmation yet, but given some of the things Whistler has said on the network, he gets a feeling he knows why the man would be asking for help from someone who can see.]

[The sound of metal is one of those sounds thats hard to mistake for anything else. Where human knuckles, an odd combination of soft flesh and hard bone, knock on a door they knock with a lower, dulled rap against. Meanwhile metal is inescapably higher in pitch and the sound is clearer, sharper, with none of the muting effect of skin. As such, Whistler's curiosity is piqued when he hears the sound at his door.

That was a new one.

Following the little guides he's set up for himself, objects turned certain ways so they act as a sort of compass to let him traverse his apartment with ease, he makes his way to the door and tugs it open]

Hello?

[And though he is staring straight at Nick, he only has a guess about who could be standing in front of him]

That you, Nick?

[Well, that confirms that. While it's nice every once in a while for someone to see him as more than a glorified toaster, it's different when this is one of those rare occasions where someone can't see him at all. Even so, Nick offers Whistler a smile, one that colors the tone of his voice.]

It's me. I told you if you needed help, all you had to do was ask, so here I am.

[The familiar voice puts his confusion to rest and his mouth drops into its usual lopsided grin. ]

That you did and that you are

[He steps to the side to make way for him]

Come on in.

[Sure, he has questions. 'Why does Nick sound like metal?' for starters, but its not exactly polite to interrogate someone who has come to help. So for the moment he is content to leave it.]

[Nick steps inside, waiting politely for Whistler to shut the door.]

Close, but not quite

[He shuts the door and begins shuffling past. His counters and his kitchen table are covered with bits of wire, gears, screws, whatever he's managed to collect over the two months he's been here. While it is an impressive collection, it is all laid out fairly neatly. There is a sense of organization]

I want to start building. But until I have a better idea of my inventory, I'm not building anything.

[Nick can't help but be impressed by how well organized things are, given the circumstances. He nods approvingly, knowing Whistler can't see it.]

So you need someone to help you figure out what's what.

[Whistler reaches up and puts a finger to the tip of his nose]

There should be other requirements besides only being able to see, don't you think? No one wants a job that anyone could do.

Well I'm not exactly setting up shop here so its less a 'should' thing than a 'what I need' thing. Yeah?

A little more information would still be helpful. What do you need, and what are you setting up? Having eyes and tech experience could mean a lot of things to many different people.

Now that is a fair question.

[He hums]

I'm working on building some things, and I've gathered a lot of stock for building, wires, screws, gears, cords, what-have-you, but my hands can only tell me so much and before I start building any sort of final product I need to know exactly what it is i'm building with.

So in essence this is a identify and catalogue project.

It's the only kind I try to ask.

[That's a lie. Not that anyone here would know. L's been too quiet, too careful. Very nearly to a fault.]

I take it you're unable to see yourself, then.

[There's a pleased chuckle at that]

Either you're the first person who has actually managed to put that together without seeing me in person, or you are at least the first who realizes it isn't going to hurt my feelings to point it out.

[A beat before he he adds]

Or you are the first who doesn't care.

[But really if everyone has been walking on eggshells over the issue he finds that over-the-top and unnecessary]

It's just that I see no point in tiptoeing around the truth. If I didn't point it out for fear of hurting your feelings, it wouldn't change the fact that you're blind. The fact that you can take the comment in stride and talk about it with ease also suggests that you've been blind for a long time.

It happens that I'm good with computers and familiar with their components. Anything related wouldn't be any particular trouble.

That assumption would be correct. I actually have excellent vision, which is especially impressive, considering how much time I've spent starting at screens.

It can be. The rule is generally that too much strain wears out any instrument more quickly.

I suppose that we should actually meet, and then I am sure that I'll return the sentiment.

[Ah. Luke is a very serious person, it would seem. Whistler lets that slide. His humor is hit or miss at best]

Do you have a preferred meeting place? Or would you be ok with coming to mine?

I have no qualms about coming to you.

[As serious as the day is long, and usually as cautious... but Hadriel has battered a lot of the suspicious paranoia out of him. He'll go where he's asked because he learned a long time ago that demanding for others to jump through hoops to appease him doesn't go well when he could just be any guy.]
