I have a project in mind. We have a city guard and a city clinic, and I was thinking we need some city firefighters, too. Then we'll have a trio of emergency services.
[ He's had it in mind since the ceiling of Guard HQ fell in on him while the building was burning at the end of the Doubles event. But also, there was talk of other incendiary incidents -- such as the one Sato was involved in? And Curufin himself had, erm, something to do with a few of the Colosseum walls being demolished by explosives while he was under the influence of Rage. And then there was the tragic demise of Delight's Bar. ]
In Hadriel, we are not strangers to the dangers of fire. Moreover, we could potentially see worse events than those that have occurred so far. And yet, here we are with no better ideas for dealing with fire than the traditional bucket brigade, and we have no real organization even for that!
So, I propose that we organize, recruit, build our own equipment, and train ourselves. I would welcome volunteers, ideas, and expertise. We will need people who will be firefighters, and we will also need people who will work in a support capacity (fire engine drivers, mechanics, electricians, and anything else we can think of).
If you would like totake insane risks, and don't mind ending up as toast, or at least dealing with a fair number of ouchies on a regular basis fight fires, or if you would prefer to work in a support role, then you are welcome to join the Hadriel Fire Brigade!
Respond here if you have questions, comments, or want to volunteer. (Or hit me up at my voicemail.)

[That all sorted out, even if the subject will weigh on him later, he brightens a little more.]
So what gave you the idea for the firefighting thing?
Re: [Video--Private]

What do you mean?
[Is he sure he wants to know?]
Suffice it to say that every member of my family has had a run-in with fire, in the form of Morgoth, the Vala of Fire and Darkness -- one of the great Powers of our world. Or in the form of his favorite henchman, Sauron, who is a Maia of fire -- one of the many demigods. Or in the form of a Balrog, the corrupted flame spirits who serve the aforementioned deities. Or in the form of the volcanic eruption that Morgoth commanded the mountains he had claimed for his own to spew forth -- that one destroyed a thousand square miles of our territory and killed a lot of our people. Oh, and I forgot the dragons.
I have been dreaming of fire, lately. It gives me pause. I was foresighted in my own world, though not on all occasions. It is an erratic faculty, even amongst the most visionary of Elves. I can't be sure that my dreams are just dreams. This might be a warning. Or maybe it's just an intuition. Fire in this place could be catastrophic.

It's also a testament to how quickly Lance has gotten used to Hadriel and the weirdness that goes along with it that he not only doesn't question any of that, but doesn't even blink at the idea of Curufin having premonitions. That's actually one of the less strange things, especially having known Avalon and realizing that maybe she was telling the truth the whole time after all.]
As strange as it is to say, that makes sense. Generally, anyway.
[The specifics not as much--Vala? Maia?--but that's okay.]
It's definitely a valid concern, and it's better to be prepared even if nothing ever happens.
[So he thinks the people complaining about this have some issues with their priorities, but he won't say that. It's not like that's been an uncommon problem here.]
Generally. [ He laughs. ]
[ It is always tricky to explain the gods and the demigods, when Curufin is talking to people who are not from god-infested universes. He himself takes their presence for granted, and he is never sure what the world looks like to a person whose universe doesn't have such blatantly active and visible deities, or doesn't have any at all, not even of the behind-the-scenes type. It must be very different! ]
I most fervently agree! Better to put in the effort and never have to make use of the team or equipment than to do nothing and later wish we had made another choice.
[ LIving in Hadriel is enough to give a person issues with their priorities and everything else! Curufin doesn't worry about people complaining. He knows the best way to get reluctant people on board with a idea is to be patient and let them have their say. ]
[It's a joke; obviously he can't figure out other worlds' details that way, and doesn't believe for a moment Curufin expects him to.
He nods in agreement.]
It isn't as though there's always enough to do here anyway.
[The boredom is a problem, and people might as well put their time toward something that has the potential to be useful even if it never ends up being so.]
The boredom would be dreadful if it weren't for special projects. I'm even grateful for the dire beasts in the tunnels and caves. They give me something to do. What would it be like if we were trapped here as we are but our existence was completely humdrum?
[It's also said lightly, but he means it; he's not sure he can take any more sad stories right now.
As far as the boredom thing goes, he doesn't even want to think about it.]
I don't know. Some people here are bad enough even with things to do to occupy their time, let alone without them.
[It'd probably go all Hunger Games pretty fast in here.]
True enough. And even good people are not at their best when confined, oppressed, and bored. [ Hunger Games or worse! ]
[Then it'd definitely be worse.]
But I wonder. . . sometimes when things become really terrible, people band together instead of fighting one another. They do the exact opposite of what you might expect. And here in Hadriel, if worst ever came to worst, I wonder which approach would prevail? -- competition or cooperation?
[Depending on individual personalities, past experiences, the current situation; it'd be a mess, though, that's for sure.]
Wasn't there an event a few months ago where something like that happened? The city itself was split?
[He's heard about it from Rosen, though it had been right before Lance had arrived.]
It was terrible for all of us, but especially those of us who had friends, relatives, or loved ones left behind with Fear. They eventually worked it out. Fear got his energy, and he brought his half of the city here and united the halves.
And yes, people cooperated with each other and with the gods. I think everyone did. All of our lives depended on it.
That explains a lot, thank you. I'd heard the event was particularly bad, but I arrived just after it ended.
[Although he supposes that if the gods didn't do it on purpose to gain energy it doesn't really count as an event, but whatever. Though actually, another thought occurs to him--]
I wonder if that had anything to do with there being no monsters in the arena the month I arrived? I heard that's never happened before.
I heard that, too. I wonder if the gods just didn't have enough energy left to scavenge the multiverse for new creatures? We sure had plenty of tunnel predators left; they could have used some of those. [ A little bit of sarcasm. ] But I guess they thought that would be kind of tacky. They usually display much more panache in their Colosseum selections!
Yeah, you can't reuse monsters. Repeats aren't very frightening.
No, we've seen this movie already! Booooo! Hiss! [ Miming a dissatisfied moviegoer razzing the film. ]
{{ OOC: Oops, Curufin got the story wrong. His player didn't go back and check her facts before writing. XD Hope, Fear, Rage and Delight were on the A Side. It was Fear who moved the halves of the city, but I think it was Hope who was really concerned about the fate of the A Side Hadrielites. }}
