It had taken him a few days to recover himself after his murder and subsequent resurrection. He wasn't all there yet, it would take time. But he was well enough that he could put on a good front. [Seel repositions himself, folding his hands together to keep himself from fidgeting. He really wanted a fucking cigarette.]

Now, who around here would be the leading the Guard? As far as I can tell you are incompetent at best and willingly corrupt at worst. It was my understanding that you were supposed to keep law and order and protect the individuals here and those who cannot defend themselves.Clearly, your methods are not working. I suggest you find me before I have to go find you. At least make yourself look willing to change and accept help.

[Henry stands in his armour, his expression serious and faintly frowning. While he thinks the accusations unfair, he manages to keep his temper down and his tone even. Of course a victim would be angry, and the Guard are a convenient, safe target.]

We are not omnipotent. Nor do we proclaim our every action. Yet we keep the door to our headquarters open, should you want to discuss this in person.

[Still, he will say this much on the network, after a pause:]

...Pell has informed me of what happened. While we cannot avert the evil already committed against you, the Guard will do our utmost to prevent any further killings.

So you would be the individual Pell called then. Henry is it? I wasn't aware he was so friendly with the Guard.

[At least he seemed like he would genuinely take action if necessary. He knew Pell had a soft heart, and in B's case had been completely taken advantage of, but Seel had to hope that in Henry's case the trust was justified. Perhaps he'd have to see about that himself.]

Do you know of anyone else that's been killed?

[He nods.] Henry Percy. Pell has many friends.

[At that question, he thinks for a brief moment. Jill departed Hadriel without closing the case of Will's murder, but he's reviewed all her gathered evidence and it seems too far back and much too neat to be the work of the same killer.]

None but Sharon.

[That was something at least. Maybe this guy was too confused with what happened to him to cause too much mayhem.]

Keep a look out. He could be more unstable now.

[Seel paused, and then pushed through with his question.]

One of your guards told me you have a small cash of extra ammunition. I'm almost out. Given the circumstances, I'd prefer to have a fully loaded weapon. I'm sure you can understand that.

[That's... an unusual statement to make.]

[Henry considers Seel's request.]

We can spare a mere few bullets. But I must impose a strict condition. Resort not to murder yourself.

[He has no problems with defending oneself, including killing to defend oneself. And back home where the dead stay dead, he even believes in righteous vengeance. But here it does nothing but antagonise those who already have no qualms murdering.]

[That was a pain in the ass restriction. But Seel didn't need a bullet to be dangerous. And he still had three of his own if it came to that. He supposed Percy was also opposed to Seel shooting the guy in the leg and tying him up somewhere and leaving him to rot. He could see why Pell liked him.]

Very well. Self defense or the defense of others only.

And yes. More unstable. No doubt anyone willing to kill anyone randomly isn't a paragon of stability to begin with, but my blood, what he went through. He's changed physically. And he wasn't prepared for it.

[It's ironic that B killed the one person who actually knew what they were doing, who had helped others through the change before for years. Pell and Cal did what they could. But it wasn't like they had experience other than their own.]

[It still amazes him that Pell hasn't mentioned that to anyone, considering the time he's been there. Unbelievable.]

He was not prepared, and it can be hard for some to adjust. As for other
mental changes, he hasn't been trained on how to do anything. I'd be more concerned about the effect on his sense of self.

[For a moment Henry just gapes.

[His eyebrows draw in as a bemused expression crosses his face. Incredulously, he double-checks:]

[Honestly, Pell. What would happen if you got hurt enough that you weren't conscious and someone tried to help you?]

It's more likely that it just kills you, but yes. There are certain steps we can take to try and ensure survival, fasting, sterile conditions, that sort of thing.

Pell really didn't tell you.

He once told me that your kind possess magic and castes. While he mentioned that humans could be transformed, he implied that it was a purposeful act. Not an accident waiting to happen.

[Give the man a cookie, he figured it out. There was every chance that he could have survived anyway, both Seel and Cal had survived horrific conditions, but they were at least around the right age range.]

Correct. This new har has the ability but not the know how. As for transformation, it usually can only be purposeful. There are stories of one other inception--like what happened here, but I had once thought it a fairy tale. Either way, it's a more dangerous way. You have to be careful to transfuse the right amount of blood. This haphazard approach usually leaves to more deaths than necessary.

[Seel had always been so careful when they incepted boys in Saltrock. So damn careful. He didn't want to kill people or cause them any more suffering than they had too.]

It won't happen again. As long as no one tries to make a meal of me.

Yes, his blood is the same. I can't imagine that he'd want to do this to others, although I am not exactly privy to his inner thoughts or reasonings.
