[ Curufin is standing in the bay of the pumping station on the north bank of the reservoir. The firefighters finished building and testing the the second of two tanker trucks the day before, and it is ready to be filled with its 11,000 gallons of water. You can hear the noise of the machinery in the background. The first tanker is already filled and ready to go. Outside, the firehouse and the ladder truck beside it are visible. ]

Firefighters and supporting crew, report in! We'll allocate our resources as soon as we know who's available and where we are needed.

And as we're a bit shorthanded, anybody who wants to join us, you are welcome to do so. Post in, and we'll find you a job.

Ah, right... I guess you do already know that. It's not just myself, of course... this is for everyone who lives in that area.

[Though admittedly, he's not so fond of his one sense of stability going up in flames. Well... no... it hasn't all gone up in flames yet, he has to try not to get too down about this. It can still be saved.]

It's going to be a tough fight... tougher perhaps than a proper monster would be. [Kain is glad someone appreciates his occasional dramatics, when it comes to this sort of thing.] But I think we still have a chance... Possibly. The next few hours will determine that, for certain.

Of course. [ In Hadriel, there is no real distinction in Curufin's mind between what is for his family and friends and what is for himself. And so he already assumes that Kain is acting to protect others as well as trying to save something for himself. ]

[ Curufin absolutely believes this -- that what has not yet gone up in flames can be saved. He believes this even in much worse situations that this one is, though this is bad enough. ]

It is. I'd almost rather have a real monster. [ Dramatics are a good thing! Elves have a great admiration and appreciation for this kind of flair, especially in tough situations. ] We'll win this one, I think. It's a tough situation, but we are tough.

[Kain is a little less optimistic, but he's trying not to let that bring him down. He's a fighter, regardless of anything else, and he'll do just that, fight this fire as if it's an enemy to conquer.]

Yes... a monster could be defeated more easily. I'd know what I was up against then. But... I suppose for now all we can do is fight. We can't give in and assume it's a lost cause.

[ Fight! ]

But this monster, the monster of fire, is not entirely unknown. [ He thinks of the flames that from time to time swept the woods of his chosen homeland in his own world, the great forests on the hills and on the highlands nearest his own territory. He and his relatives and his allies had fought the fires and contained them, and they had come to comprehend this force of nature. The unnatural flames that originated in Morgoth's fortress and overwhelmed the adjoining plains at the start of two wars -- these were less understood, but known. Curufin would not balk at a Hadriel fire, though who knew if it was natural or not? ]

Indeed, we can't give in. [ And he knows Kain never will. He is proud to fight beside him. ]

Do you think it's some unnatural cause? Why am I even asking such a thing, here...

[Because of course it's unnatural, especially if the gods are behind it somehow. And even if not, there are plenty of strange creatures here, a lot of opportunities for something to go terribly wrong.]

It very well could be. We'll have to keep an eye out for any indication of the fire's source.

I don't know. There are plenty of flammable materials in the buildings here, and certainly a lot of possibilities for accidents. But the gods have been behind practically everything that has happened here since I arrived, so I suspect they had something to do with it. We'll just have to keep an eye out for causes, as you say.

I wonder what purpose they would have in setting a dangerous fire... do they mean to eradicate us entirely? [That's the first place his mind goes, unfortunately, as he thinks back to his own past experiences.] Or might this be a mistaken, a result of something else they meant to do?

Well... I guess speculation can wait. For now, we take action.
