So, I can't be the only one who's been smacked in the face with culture shock, right? Or technology-shock, because a lot of the shit that's here I've never seen or heard of and have no idea how it works. I've figured out a couple of things through trial and error, but I'm not too proud to admit most of my reaction is still 'no fucking clue'. For those in the same boat, how long did it take you to adjust? What's the craziest discovery you've made? And for those that aren't, care to lend some advice? I'll pay you in drinks or other stuff; if you've the patience to endure all my questions, you've earned it.

I've said it elsewhere, but just repeating myself now: if you're on that hit list and not that great at defending yourself, let me know. I'm pretty damn good at that, and so is the large war dog at my side. [Said war dog lets out an eager bark.]

Oh, you'll learn. We all have. I only flooded our home a few times before I learned how to do the wash.

I wanted to say, Warden, that you're always welcome here with Cole and I if you're still living on your own and would prefer not to. I think Pup would love the company, too.

[ Of another dog, that is. Somewhere, Pup barks. ]

As long as you don't mind, sure. Given the crap that's going on, there's safety in numbers...and Barkspawn would absolutely be thrilled to have a four-legged playmate.

I've been doing the wash in the sink. Isn't running water amazing?? And running hot water, too! Barkspawn especially loves that water bowl in the bathroom, he'll play with that handle just to make more.

Of course we don't. We had so many people living here that are gone now that it's been overly-empty for months. I know that I'd appreciate the company.

[ Cole is vanished fairly often, after all. ]

That it is. The water, the heat... it's all incredible. I never really tire of the novelty. And, as you've said, it's apparently very fun for the dogs.

[ She's never been a huge dog person, but it's. Endearing to see Pup get his head stuck in the toilet. ]

Barkspawn still hates baths, but I'm hoping the novelty of running water will at least get him to calm the fuck down instead of instantly running off. He hates that little box that heats things up, though that might be because I ruined mine.

[Look, she didn't know how use the microwave so that it doesn't belch smoke, it's amazing there weren't flames everywhere.]

As long as you're sure, I'll claim a room for us. Let me see about finishing up here so that we're not reeking of smoke when we get there.

The oven? One of the heaters?

[ She's forgotten entirely about the microwave. Probably because it's been crisply on the inside for some time now. ]

Our home is yours, et cetera. [ beat ] ... What's that about reeking of smoke?

It's like a tiny oven? I don't know what it's called, but I left something in there too long and smoke started pouring out. All the windows are open now, so it's not as bad as it was, but the smell still lingers a bit.

I've been here two months now and I've yet to fully adjust. I think the most amazing discovery I've made so far was the can opener.

...there's a way to open cans without stabbing it with a knife??

Yes! They have it in the shop. How to describe it . . . it's like a little clamp with a turning knob and a blade on one side.

Ingenious. I'll have to look for one. Any other good kitchen stuff, while I'm at it?

[bright laugh] Honestly, I wouldn't be the one to ask. I still burn everything I try to cook.

At some point, it might just be better to go lazy and do sandwiches or something, but it's also fun to experiment with all the gadgets, you know?

One adjusts as one's needs demand. Hadriel's many devices shall become familiar to you.

[Henry almost leaves it there, so there is a pause before he adds:]

Have you yet tried Tranquility's scooters?

They'd become familiar faster if people explained them to me.

What are scooters?

Open-topped carriages for a single person which move themselves forward when one steps on a pedal. They are inferior to horses, but they possess the advantage of being made of metal, and having no will of their own. They are also named “mopeds” — you shall hear both used to refer to them.

...I might have crashed one already. I didn't know what thing did what, and went faster than I meant to. It's not seriously damaged, though.

Yes, I just wish that more of them came with lists of simple instructions.

I know! I've ruined too many things just guessing.

And what about all the little holes in the wall? I poked at one and it zapped me!

Did you find out? [To be honest, he doesn't really bother with most of them.]

I think the little holes in the wall are for different electronic devices. At least I followed the line leading from my [her voice turns uncertain for a moment] lamp to a set of holes. I pulled at the line, it came out of the holes, and the lamp stopped working. I put the line back in the holes and it worked again.

[There's a pause as she goes to test this out, then chuckles as Barkspawn yelps in surprise.]

Okay, that's way more useful and fun than getting zapped. I can see myself getting way too amused by this.

[Tug it out, light goes off, push it back in, light goes on. Magic!]

Some things! I learned about a can opener, and the fact that those little holes in the wall have a better purpose than just zapping people.

Cecily said I could live over at the house. Is that cool with you, too?

It's her house. I don't mind.

[Marg waits. and is that a doggie in the background?]

Very much so! I haven't been to the shops lately, but perhaps they've included more devices we can use with the holes.

Barkspawn and I will have to look. It'll be like a treasure hurt, sorta.

Man, if the craftsman back at Orzammar could see all this, they'd shit themselves.
