Did someone lose this? [Nothing holds up a denim jacket, just his size, and probably a better choice than the dirty coat he has on at the moment.] It's not mine. This thing is awesome though so I bet one of you wants it back.

I'm not too far from the Spires. You can have it if you want. [Although if the way he's holding onto it suggests anything, it's that he doesn't want to give it up.]

Let's try the LSD first. [she can hear the overeagerness and it's weirdly endearing. does he not have friends he can do this kind of stuff with here?]

Nothing, huh? Okay. My name's Laura.

Okay. Have you tripped before? [He asks this casually as he tears one of the tabs off the paper.] What have you done before, by the way? [Druggie talk was easy. He'd made most of his high school friends over it.]

Hi Laura. I like your dress. [Although, after he considers it a moment, he adds:] Are you cold?

No, I can't say that I have. [honesty was probably the best policy in this case] I've done cocaine, mostly. I tried pot a few times. And does alcohol even count? [she says with a laugh. Laura had to keep her drug use largely hidden back home, it didn't fit in with the image of the beloved homecoming queen image she cultivated]

Thanks. And I'm fine, my blood has always run hot.

[He chuckled a bit at her choice of words but offered a tab of LSD to Laura.] Put it under your tongue and suck on it. It'll kick in a little after the tab dissolves. And if you freak out I"ll be right here.

Alcohol doesn't count, [He smiles.] And neither does pot. I've never tried coke, though. Is it worth it?

[she takes the tab from him] Okay, sounds good to me.

Didn't think so. [she smiles back] And . . . yes and no. It worked great in the beginning. I was feeling no pain. But as I kept using it, I started having to use more and more to get the same effect. And the withdrawal was awful.

[she puts the tab of acid under her tongue]

[Nothing pops a tab under his own tongue and sucks his tongue, letting the paper dissolve slowly.] Just suck on it. It probably won't make you hallucinate, but things will seem more alive.

[He listens to what Laura has to say about the drug, frowning a bit when she describes the extent of her experience.] Sounds like I'll keep away from it, then. I'd rather have pain than withdrawal.

Hey, where're you from? [The question sounds sudden even to his ears and Nothing amends it.] I mean, you look like you're from close to where I am and when I am.

[she grins at him] I like anything that'll make me feel more alive.

[she nods] At first, it deadened my pain, but in the long run all it did was cause more pain. And I'm stuck dealing with the things that made me start using in the first place.

Me? I'm from Twin Peaks, Washington in 1989. How about you?

[He smiles back.] Me too.

Well, you don't have to deal with them today. Today you get to be alive.

1992. And New Orleans, I guess.

[her smile widens] Which is why you've got the good stuff.

Here's to that. Too bad we don't have any drinks, we could've made a toast.

1992, huh? So were the phones as confusing to you as they were to me?

[He shrugs a little.] The truth doesn't have to be a toast. But drinks would be good.

Yeah, I don't like using them. They're not like real phones.

Yeah, they would be. Lucky for us they don't seem to care about the legal drinking age here.

They're weird. I don't like using mine, either. I'd rather see who I'm talking to in real life, not over some video camera.

Wouldn't matter even if they did. If we find drinks, we can steal them.

I don't know why they're called phones. They're walkie-talkies mixed with TVs.

[she laughs maybe a little too loudly--the LSD is kicking in] You're right. The alcohol is free, so why not steal it?

Tiny, tiny little TVs. Who'd wanna watch anything on a screen so tiny, anyway?

That way it's always free no matter what.
[It's starting to kick in for him too, he thinks. Things certainly seem brighter both literally and figuratively, but that may be the company.]

Who knows? I guess there's someone out there who can't stand to be away from a TV even when they go outside.

As it should be! I mean, there's nothing to do here. The Speakeasy's okay, but it's no Bang Bang Bar.

[she stares at the cave ceiling with its artificial stars and reaches out to trace a constellation only see knows]

Ugh. You know what I call those kinds of people, Nothing? Boring.

At least someone's growing weed here now. That'll help, not that it makes up for being stuck.
[Everything's tedious if you're stuck.

Nothing watches her, smiling a little. She seems to be taking well to the acid.]

I think you're right.

Oh, yes. I can't wait until it's ready to go. I'll be first in line.

[which they are. stuck. stuck. stuck. but he's cool, so that helps]

[Laura's confident. Nothing had struggled with that before his father died, so he can't help but admire her for it.]

I'm guessing you didn't watch much TV at home.

Really? That's cool of you.

[oh, Laura has her issues. mention her father and watch her fall apart. but for the most part, she's very comfortable in her own skin, despite presenting two very different Lauras depending on the circumstances]

Oh fuck no. There are so many better things to do. Like hanging out with friends. Or sex.

[He shrugs.] It's not as much fun to get fucked up by yourself.

[Nothing has the opposite issues. Mention his father, and watch the better-adjusted people in the room fall apart. He's never been fully comfortable in his own skin, although part of that has to do with so recently realizing what he was.]

Yeah. Or music. Friends and sex are great, but people stop really living when they don't have good music.

Ugh, I know. That was another shitty thing about doing coke. I could only do it around certain people.

[Laura will help him get more comfortable. not through sex in this case but positive reinforcement]

That's why I always liked going to the Bang Bang Bar. They always had live music.

Yeah... I try not to be around people I can't get high in front of. Maybe it's different for coke, I don't know.

[That's a much better idea for both of them. Nothing having sex with a girl wouldn't go so well.]

[she shrugs] I couldn't do it in front of my best friend. She didn't know about the drugs or the sex or the prostitution. [bitter laugh] Or she didn't know until recently.

No idea. I can't play anything. Can you?

Doesn't sound like much of a best friend. [Not that he's a great judge of this. Not after eating Laine.]

No. I want to learn, though.

[denies vehemently] No! Donna was great. She was the only good thing in my entire life and I--let her be taken advantage of.
