So, um. This is gonna sound stupid? Probably because it is. But does anyone have any tips for how to--how to flirt? 'Cause I don't know how. Like, at all.

Why not? I'd ask yourself what it is you're afraid of.

Failure? Rejection? Losing the friendship?

You can't fail at something you never try, rejection is a risk no matter how you approach it, and if they're a good friend it'll work out one way or another. But you won't know for sure if you're not honest.

How close are you two?

[she makes a groaning noise]

Pretty close. At least I think so?

Even I realize you're cute, George. So, you know, if she has eyes she probably knows that too.

That would make you the second person to tell me so. Haven't had a lot of compliments on my looks. Or compliments in general.

I feel like most people aren't showered with them, honestly. But that doesn't mean others don't realize.

[ Maybe, hmm? Pell shrugs -- there are a lot of people here, after all. ]

It just seems like flirting will make things more complicated than they need to be, if you're already close. Adding another variable in that she'll have to notice and take it the right way. It'd be much easier to bring it up honestly.

I wish that people would. Mention it? 'Cause most of the comments I've gotten about my looks haven't been too great.

If that's what you're comfortable with. I don't actually know the first thing about dating, but if that's where both your cultures start? Why not.

My mom. She'd always tell me to slouch less, to smile more, that nobody liked a girl who didn't try to be, you know. Pretty. Approachable.

Well, usually you kind of have to work it in there. Something between the "hi" and the "I like you."

I can see how being unapproachable could be a problem if you were trying to make friends? But that's contradictory and you've never struck me as that.

[ Unapproachable, to Pell, is the person who sulks in the corner sharpening his knife and glaring at anyone who dares look his way. He doesn't know how George was back home, but here she engages with others all the time. ]

[George was the queen of unapproachable before she died. she had her walls up and her defense mechanisms finely tuned. but then she died. and she found herself actually wanting to reach out a little more, try to bond with people. it worked with Betty, but then she left. she tried with Charlotte, only for Charlotte to turn out to be more interested in her father than she was in George. here has been a shock to her system in many ways, but she's gotten better at making connections. it's been hard work, though]

Um. Something about how her day's going? If she found anything cool in the stores, maybe?

[ Pell shakes his head a little, not exactly shooting it down but thinking it needs more relation to the topic at hand. ]

That's not really much of a lead in. Still a major jump from the usual small talk to 'I like you,' don't you think?

[George finds a nearby pillow and buries her face in it. her voice comes out muffled]

I don't know. I don't know what I'm gonna do and I'm gonna suck if I try.
