No...it's not like that. They were killed by the ones called the Null - massacred, en masse. I've never found out whether they were dumped in the lake or that was just where they happened to be when they died.
They're machines. Entirely, there is no living body in them. They're the...species, I guess, that obliterated the people who originally lived here as well as the gods, all except Hope and Fear. They regard emotions as a virus and would rather eradicate the source than find a humane and logical way to deal with it.
