So, uh, I was kind of wondering. How many people here died before they came here? And how many are now immortal?

My case was a little. . . weird. Okay, a lot weird.

The Quendi live as long as the world exists- so long as nothing unfortunate befalls us, of course.

Oh, man. So it's immortality with a catch?

No, it's not rude, I mean I was the one being rude in the first place by asking, right?

So I'm eighteen years old. On my lunch break from a crappy job I hated. And this guy comes on up to me asking all of this personal stuff about me. And he touches me. Which was weird.

Next thing I know, I'm getting blown up by a flying toilet seat from space and getting the news that I just got drafted into becoming a Grim Reaper.

The same catch as everyone else has. It's very difficult to live without a head, or with a blade embedded in your bowels.

[A flat WHAT seems like a reasonable response to that]

Oh yeah. I've seen those things happen. Not pretty.

[she looks awkward, but then again when doesn't she?]

Uh-huh. It was in space, so it kind of had a lot of velocity. So I couldn't get out of the way in time.

[it's a very reasonable response to that. her death was weird]

Not at all. Though the singers do try.

[He may not have the specifics, but velocity- that he can imagine.]

Ah- I am sorry. But you were given another form of life after the fact?

They try, but it doesn't work with people who know better.

Yeah. As a Grim Reaper.

It depends on the person, I suppose. Some can appreciate the aesthetic without believing too committed in it.

[A moment's pause as he tries to work out what that might be.]

I fear I do not know what that is, my lady.

I guess. I just had a hard time watching movies that showed death after I died. It was all too fake.

[that's okay, a lot of people don't seem to know]

It's a--a person who takes the souls of people who are going to die. And I'm no lady. I'm just George.
