I know you asked about this out of a desire to help, but you have to talk to your friend about these sorts of things first. What they're dealing with is difficult enough without other people taking actions on their behalf that they may not approve of, no matter how good the intentions are.

But just asking about potential options without their permission is an issue; a sense agency is incredibly vital in dealing with something like a terminal illness, or something similar to it, and so being able to choose what actions to take regarding it is something you need to allow your friend to have.
