(Newt's sitting cross-legged on the floor and has his phone set up to be set on him in a very steady image. He's got a sheet of paper with what looks like a map drawn on it next to another, slightly more different map. For anyone who bothers to look at the floor anyway. Newt, however, is not looking at the floor but at the camera itself.)

You know, I've been thinkin' bout the monsters here lately. Went explorin' out in the caves the other night and I kinda realized something. I know it's gonna sound bloody insane but hear me out.

I kind of feel for the monsters. I mean, think about it. They're being treated just as unfairly as all of us, aren't they? They were dragged outta their worlds too and thrown into this place. I know they're violent but they don't seem...that bad? Mostly they stick to the caves and yet we go on in there slaughtering them all of the time and not always for food. Maybe I'm wrong but...that doesn't feel right to me somehow. Throwing all these creatures into a small section of this place then just tearing them apart because the gods tell us they'll give us rewards for it.

And trust me, I'm no bloody saint there - I'm guilty of it too but now that I've taken a step back and really thought about it, I have no idea why I ever thought that was okay. They're not robots. They're living creatures. They feel pain too, don't they?

(Newt frowns, twisting at the ends of his sleeves.)

Half the time- no. More than half of the time they don't even do anything to us. So maybe we should stop killing them unless it's for food. I 'unno.

(He sighs, looking off to the side of his room. Maybe he doesn't understand the world enough to understand something like that. But then he looks as if he's remembered something and grabs the two pieces of paper and holds them up to the camera so that everyone can see. The maps are of the tunnels.

Except one is different.)

By the way, the tunnels change. Discovered that. I'm kind of disappointed. That's how our Maze was too so I can't say I'm all that shocked here. Our Maze would change every night and it turned out that if you aligned the patterns, they spelled out words. So if anyone cares about seeing why the tunnels change- there you go. Wish you luck.

(Annnnd that's about it actually. He flips the video off after that casual reveal.)

Mmhm. Mechanical creatures made to seem like they're sentient when really they're just given tasks to perform. They're a bit like your mutts, maybe, but made out of machine bits rather than flesh and blood. We had to deal with 'em a bit in my world.

I've seen a robot. [ thoughtfully, though she's had to consider it a moment. maybe not quite like his robots. ]

But they're all real here? Not robots?

Here or back home? (Maybe not, maybe so. Who knows? His robots were odd things.)

I haven't seen a single robot creature here. Everything bleeds its own kind of blood and seems to have some sort of...I don't know. Life force, I suppose. The only mechanical being I know here is a robotic man but he's not a monster. He's one of us.

In the Capitol. [ so, home, in a way. ]

So the gods want the monsters dead, then. But why?

Somewhere distantly in the background on his end, another boy's voice can be softly heard saying "Oh, she's a clever one, Newt.")

Sorry, that was Peter. He's right though. That's sort of the point I'm making though I could have gone about it differently. I've no idea. It's odd that they should bring through both people and monsters but intentionally want for the monsters to die. I realize that people could argue the monsters can't give them the same emotions as people but at the same time...I keep wondering if they're just tools to fuel our feelings or...I don't know. It's bizarre that they want them dead if that's the case. I can't work it out myself.

[ she laughs good-naturedly. she doesn't feel very clever right now, what with the awful hangover, but she appreciates it. ]

Well they attack us sometimes. Maybe they get something out of it. [ she hums softly. that seems odd, though, since the monsters don't see to be very smart. ] Maybe the gods just bait them. I don't think I believe they come here on accident.

(Her reaction warrants a grin from Newt, though she can't see it. There's a muffled "Hey, Cash." from the other end of the phone and it's pretty clear Newt's at least told Peter a little bit about Cashmere.)

Perhaps. It could be any number of reasons. The gods have little logic on their side. I don't think it was accidental either. Maybe clumsily planned but planned all the same.

I wonder...I keep wondering if they reproduce. The monsters, I mean. If they can have offspring. I mean some, probably not, no, but things like the bears or those big cats. The jabberjays, even.

Jabberjays do. Kind of. Not with other jabberjays. They're all boys. The Capitol thought they would die out but they mated with mockingbirds. Then they're mockingjays. They're nicer birds. Still chatty.

There can be animals of all one sex? (Now that struck him as extremely bizarre. But then he remembered the details of Cashmere's world and it's not quite as surprising.)

I haven't seen any other birds here, honestly. Not that I can think of anyway.

They bred they in labs. I guess - I think that's the only way. [ she's not... sure? it's not her place to know the science on this. ]

It's kind of weird, isn't it? How there's no birds.
