( It's been a while, not only since Kate's addressed the city by video, but since the city's seen her in full, vibrant pink haired glory. God, she misses paying for hair dye with money like a normal person. God favours are a pain. But that did happen, and her hair returned to its customary hue sometime before everyone's limbs got chopped off or their senses disappeared.

But she appears calm, collected, and just a smidgen over this city divided in four nonsense when she speaks. )

First things first - Clinic's on the island with the Colosseum. Supplies are alright. Gonna get transported to other islands soon as possible. Anyone who can heal or do first aid who isn't part of the clinic let us know your location if anyone needs help.

( But most importantly: ) Don't be stupid. Our assistance is limited for now.

It has been a long time since such skills were needful, but although I am no healer, battle-field first aid I can do.

I will, thank you milady. I think my brother Curufin is also working on a small boat - it should hopefully not be that long before we have transport between the islands.

So he said. ( Thank fuck for Curufin honestly. She wouldn't have the first clue on where to start building one. Maybe she could build a raft, but who wants to try that on this sea? )

The scattered nature of the place? Aye, probably, but I suppose it never occurred to them that it might be a problem. Well, 'tis an inconvenience relatively easily worked around, at least. The distances are not so far that small boats will not cross them easily, although if we have bad storms that might be a problem.

( And why would it. Imagine if they'd had gods who were remotely competent at this whole thing.

... Actually, maybe don't, because their events would probably be a lot worse. )

Law mentioned in his own world he had a ship that could go under the waves. If not for... whatever might lurk in the waters here, I might suggest we look to that as an option but...

I could also try and sing the storms to peace, I suppose. [ he says doubtfully ] But this world doesn't know me. Such things would be very difficult.

( Sing the storms to peace? She's known people who can summon fire from their veins and seen people manipulate water with a touch, but never quite like that. No one she's met back home could control the weather, by song or any other means.

How's that work?

( Call a power analyst curious. Hadriel always throws interesting things her way. )

[ He frowns thoughtfully, groping for words to describe concepts he knows more by instinct than any acutal practice ]

We... my folk can hear the song of the world, and in the hearing, we can speak to it in turn. Sometimes, we can convince it to listen.

( So... nothing like what she expected. The song of the world. Sounds like vague nonsense, the same way souls do, to her. But souls are real somewhere - something which she knows too clearly, too well, from having watched Carlisle's powers, having seen the way his being spills into the ether - and therefore, there's no reason to doubt the explanation.

It's still strange to consider, though. )

( Maybe there is some form of song they don't know, but no one has ever heard it. )

I'm not the best to explain. [ He says apologetically ]

But I do know that Men have always struggled to hear the Song - and I use the word for lack of a better one, you understand - as we do. It may be that every world has a Song, but not every world has folk who can hear it.

( She doesn't seem put out by the lacking explanation. It's hard to explain some things. )

Never know what people might perceive that you don't.

( Not as philosophical as it sounds, when you consider that it comes from someone who can easily see far more than her currently unremarkable brown eyes suggest. )

[ He nods ]

Even amongst my folk, we all have... different specialities? [ He hazards ] There are things that answer easily to my brother that won't for me.

( A nod, short and swift, at the explanation. )

Strengths and weaknesses. ( Like she was good at moving, or controlling her power. Marc was good at thinking, great at sudden bursts of power but took so much longer to learn the control she had figured out. )

Water for me, Fire and Metal for Curufin, Maedhros commands, Caranthir Weaves and Celegorm could speak the tongues of bird and beast. My youngest brothers were too young to know what they might have been, but they were hunters, and I suspect they spoke to Wood.

( There's a brief expression that flickers over Kate's face when he mentions Curufin's strength, as though she can quite easily believe that he aligns with fire.

It fits, much like fire fits Faith, bright and passionate and all consuming.

Then he mentions the last part and her amusement fades, replaced by a tilt of the head, a curiosity lighting her eyes. )

You needed to be a certain age?

( Interesting. Nothing that she's heard before. Back home, you're born that way. It might take longer for certain powers to come out, for those who are Named to display each talent which earns them their title, but it's there from the start. )

[ He waggles his hand in a 'sort of' ]

For a formal apprenticeship, aye. We... left before they ever completed more than the bare bones of such things. Although the true workings of such things are beyond any of us save my Arafinwean cousins.

( Okay, that makes sense. In a different way to anything she's used to, but it makes sense. )

They're not a mystery. Might not know how to use them, but most people'll know. Comes from their parents. Doctors usually confirm it. Most people train 'em by themselves if they decide to use them.

( There are those who don't. Her own parents didn't really bother, beyond the occasional use of telepathy, or explaining her ability to sense powers. )

Ah, it runs in families then? Why are healers involved?

( Even now, Kate has to resist the urge to ask why wouldn't they be. But she knows, from every bewildered look that she gets when she explains her job and her power, that most worlds don't see powers the way hers do. )

Powers're a biological thing. Gettin' 'em looked at is part of any check up. Make sure nothing's wrong with 'em.

I see - that is very interesting, and I beg you forgive my curiosity. Can they be treated then, your powers, if something goes wrong, as if it were an illness?
