Create with the heart, build with the mind, and don't hammer your thumb! [Video/Action]
[ On the south shore of North Island, Ignis Scientia and Curufin Fëanorion stand in front of a stack of boards. The construction of the North Island pier has commenced. It will be a low, narrow, and simple structure, but solidly built. Shovels, picks, hand-crank drills, and sledgehammers are leaned against the embankment, where it is obvious that some earth-moving is already taking place in order to accommodate the structure as it goes up. The logs that will stand upright to uphold the walkway are already cut and shaped and are ready to be driven into the muck at the bottom of the water. Saws, hammers, pliers, and other tools are stacked neatly in their bins near the lumber, and cans of nails and fasteners. Gleams of sunlight break through the clouds occasionally, although a faint mist lies on the water, and the breeze is slight. It's a great day to work, not too hot and not too cold. ]
Welcome to our humble construction site! We intend to make life easier for anybody who uses a boat. Now you won't have to moor offshore and wade to get to the beach, just tie up at the pier and stroll along the walkway. When we're finished here, we'll move on to the other islands and do the same, so that everybody has a place to dock. We have some highly skilled people lined up to work with us already, but everybody who can dig or wield a hammer is welcome. We'll find you something meaningful to do!
[ They also won't mind if you show up just to cheer them on or serve the food. There are some tables with sandwiches and drinks, but the workers won't object if you bring more. ]
[ OOC: Ignis or Curufin or both will respond, and of course feel free to mingle! ]
[ And the post title is a quote that I mangled, from Criss Jami's Killosophy. ]

Later as the water becomes deeper, it'll get harder to shoo the water out of the way, and they'll have to rely more on mechanical solutions. Curufin has people working on a box-shaped wooden frame that can be sunk so that the bottom of the frame rests on the sand at the bottom of the water, and it will be weighted so that it stays down, by either stones or cement blocks attached to the bottom of the frame. The top will include a railing and secure footing for those who must stand on it and use it as a point of leverage and rely on it to stay in place while they pound the posts deep into the muck at the bottom. ]
[ And of course Curufin meant to please! ] Well. . . you didn't make the stars, you just sang to them. I think you made them sparkle the brighter, for pleasure in your song. I'm not sure Lady Varda would object to my praising you for that! [ Chuckle ]

My brother with a silver tongue. [ Maglor laughs, a pleased sound ] Well, I'll have to write something suitable for the day you succeed then!
action
I thought I had a crow's or a raven's tongue, not a silver tongue. Remember? [ Grin. Thinking of Maglor's adorable nickname for his beady-eyed little brother, little crow or little raven. ]
action
Can my little raven not sing sweetly also? [ Maglor teases ]
action
Of course I can. [ Makes raven sounds. ] KRAAA! KRAAAA!!!
action
Ai, my ears! Stop making that racket.
action
You want me to sing a sweet song instead?
action
I think I would definitely prefer that!
action
Oh, the summertime is coming,
and the leaves are sweetly blooming,
and the wild mountain thyme
blows around the purple heather.
Will you go, lassie, go?
And we'll all go together
to pick wild mountain thyme
all around the purple heather!
Will you go, lassie, go?
I will build my love a bower
near yon pure crystal fountain,
and on it I will build
all the flowers of the mountain.
Will you go, lassie, go?
And we'll all go together
to pluck wild mountain thyme
all around the purple heather!
Will you go, lassie, go?
If my true love she were gone,
I would surely find another,
where the wild mountain thyme
grow around the purple heather.
Will you go, lassie, go?
And we'll all go together
to pluck wild mountain thyme
all around the purple heather!
Will you go, lassie, go?
[ This is a song of the Dorthonion highlands. Maglor will probably remember hearing it in the villages in Himlad, as the Elves there were close neighbors of Dorthonion and very quick to pick up the sweetest of mortal tunes. ]
[ OOC: Scottish traditional, of course. XD ]
action
[ Maglor smiles to hear the song, eyes distant with fond rememberance - it has been a long, long time. But his voice picks up the tune, winding a soft counterpoint to Curufin's own ]
Thank you, Curvo. I hadn't heard that since...
action
. . . since the old days on the Marches? When we had time to hear musicians and to sing. I remember.
[ His eyes are warm with that memory. ]
action
Aye. Hard days, but they had joy to them too.
action
It's true, there was joy in those days. It has long been a comfort to me to remember that.
[ And he winks at Maglor as he lifts his sledgehammer again. ] How about something snappier, something to help us get this post in? Any favorite tunes for that?
[ Because working to a sung rhythm is an old standby of craftsmen, laborers, sailors, etc. The Elves knew this of old. ]
action
I, also.
[ Maglor agrees and laughs softly, humming thoughtfully before picking out one that must have begun as a dwarf song, long ago, the rhythm of the hammer and pick ]
Hark! Now, the hammer blow,
Strike! true, the pick and hoe,
Lift the lantern, scan the dark
Look for veins of gold.
Deep! Go the shafts that run
East of moon and West of sun
Seek we now that truest gift
Blood of mountains deep
High! rise the pillared halls
of Durin's kin in mountains tall
Carved and forged by many hands
Here the mithril sleeps!
action
Is that a Dwarf song or is that yours? I don't remember hearing it at Belegost.
[ Thud! The great iron hammerhead strikes again. ]
action
[ Maglor admits ]
You know they don't like outsiders learning Khuzdul. But they always underestimated how much we could actually hear. The tune is theirs. The words are mine.
action
making a nuisance of myselfentertaining them and crafting jewels for them, before they deigned to teach me the language![ He chuckles. ] But I'm pleased to know you got something out of those expeditions yourself. Indeed, Makalaurë, we have sharp ears, and you especially. It's a charming tune, and your lyrics are lovely!

action
You know how easily offended they can be!
action
I do like your lyrics, brother. They so capture the heart of the crafts we Noldor and the Dwarves practiced for so long -- and still do, those of us who survive. Including the art of poetry. You are a wonderful songwriter!
action
[ Maglor preens, pleased ] I'm glad you think so, brother.
action
[ And who has a better right to preen than Maglor! ] There is a reason they called you the Bard of Valinor. . . and then the Bard of Middle-earth.
action
[ he ducks ]
Daeron is better.
action
[ Older brother is too fast and avoids the swat aimed at him! XD ]
We have had this discussion before. Daeron is not better!
