This is long overdue, but Tranquility's post and some of the responses to it made it apparent that we needed a new summary of what's going on, especially for anyone who's arrived in only the last few months. I've put together a brief history here, specifically for the conflict between the Null and the gods, the issue of the rogue Null in the city, and the Door.

[Also hi, everyone. Lance is serious business at the moment, but it's just 'focused' serious rather than 'everything is awful' serious. Which is a nice change for him, honestly.]

Hopefully that'll kind of help a little, and feel free to ask questions or make corrections, especially if you've been here longer or know more than I do about this; it's also a pretty brief summary, so if I left out anything you think is important just say so. Remember, though, that this is supposed to be facts, not editorializing about who's telling the truth or what side to be on.

It's also been awhile since I mentioned it, so for everyone new, I'm Dr. Lance Sweets; I'm a clinical psychologist. Adjusting to being here--as well as dealing with everything that can happen in this place--can be kind of difficult, especially when you don't know anyone, so I just wanted to mention that it's always okay to call or send me a message, even if we've never met. It also doesn't have to be an emergency; you're not wasting my time, so don't worry about anything like that.

[He won't mention it but he's usually not doing anything important; it would be hard to waste his time even if he were the type to call it such a thing.]

[[ooc: Just a brief mention here that although Lance is totally willing to meet with people for therapy sessions, I'd prefer to start handwaving these meetings unless we do prior planning for them, mostly because I'm absolutely not a psychologist and so threading them out is not easy. However, I'm definitely still interested in oocly discussing what they might've talked about and what Lance might've suggested, so just send me a PM!]]

things are good, been practicing some rusty cartography on a sloop i found not long after we first got here. definitely not sea voyage-worthy but it's gotten me around the island chain.

Good. And yeah, of course; I think Nick's going to attach it to the newcomer guide as well.

[Though he needs to add a little to it after Kate's info, but it'll be fine.]

What's a sloop? Besides a boat, obviously.

[He knows nothing about boats larger than a kayak okay.]

it's a kind of sailboat, with a mast and a boom and a rudder, but nothing fancy. sort of got half a cabin in it.

[Nate attaches a photograph.]

easier than waiting on a ferry, and pretty maneuverable. you never been on one?

[Oh, that's smaller than he expected, but nice. Probably a lot more stable than a kayak, but not too huge.

But as for the question--]

No; my experience with boats is limited to kayaking and the time Booth and Brennan used me to get invited on a cougar cruise.

[Nate, who has lost the ability to text because he's laughing too goddamn hard, switches the format.]

You were used as cougar bait?

[Lance is trying and failing to hide that he's pretty amused by this entire response.]

Don't sound so shocked.

[He says it was as much mock offense as he can, which isn't a lot at the moment.]

I was actually there to assist in questioning a suspect that was more likely to be cooperative toward me than toward Booth, but I did get several free drinks out of it.

[Oh, Nate isn't shocked. He can absolutely see it. Lance has a kind of guileless baby-face that Nate suffered from for a few good years in his twenties.]

I'm sure you did.

[He says in a stage whisper, waggling his eyebrows.]

[Lance makes a show of rolling his eyes, although he's still smiling.]

Brennan did too.

[And the implication that Booth did not is pretty clear.]

Double trouble.

[Nate laughs, because he definitely picks up on the fact that their third party wasn't nearly as successful in the endeavor. In fairness, though, Nate knows that he himself would not pass muster at a cougar convention. It's about fifteen years too late for that.]

I'm guessing you got what you needed, though.

[He grins a bit more again at the comment, because yes, Lance and Brennan could definitely be double trouble, especially for Booth. He has a lot of fond memories of ganging up on Booth about pointless things while he was living with them, enjoying tag-teaming with Brennan in contrast to his normal partnership with Booth.]

We did. We were actually there to talk to the bartender, not any of the patrons. He gave us some useful information and we did end up solving the case.

And yet you didn't come out of it with a sugar mama. I'm shocked.

[He's grinning, now, so he's obviously being a shithead.]

I'm sure you're totally shocked.

[He says it in a deadpan tone of sincerity, not buying it in the slightest, although that reminds him--]

We still have a bet to settle, you know.

[Nate's grin sobers almost immediately, which is a dead giveaway that he'd hoped Lance had forgotten. He recovers quickly, as always, a cat falling and landing on all four paws.]

Yeah, we do. Elena's out, but I guess I could just trust you'll be, uh, sincere.

[He takes great amusement in that reaction, because you as so in for it Nate.]

We can always record it and let her judge when she gets back. I wouldn't want you to feel cheated in hindsight.

No, I trust you.

[Which is a whole lot, crammed into a small statement.]

Should I, uh...walk two floors down, or...?

I can just come up there, and that way we can get right to looking through what clothes you already own when you lose.

[He loves you bro but you've made a terrible mistake.]

Nate pulls a grimace, because as decent a con man as he can be when it comes to people who don't know him well, with people who do there's no sense in being anything but blatantly honest.]

...I'm not gonna have anything you like, so I'll just head over. See you soon.

[For someone who has experienced all varieties of physical pain, ripping off a pride-related Band-Aid is hard. He tries to look more chill than he really is when he knocks.]

[Lance is, of course, expecting him, so he's waiting near the door when Nate knocks and lets him in almost immediately.]

Now, because I'm a nice person, I'm going to give you a one time offer of taking back your challenge. I mean, obviously you'd be forfeiting by default, but the only casualty would be your pride.

[He doesn't expect Nate to take the deal, so he's really just being smug.]

I'm a man of my word!

[Nate says as he steps inside, and the statement is almost a protest. He isn't about to half-ass one thing when he can whole-ass everything.

They don't need to record this for posterity, anyway. He knows he's losing.]

But I appreciate the gesture.

[Lance shrugs, clearly a gesture of 'it's your funeral', shutting the door behind Nate and then leading the way to the living room.]

So it was just to tell you that you look distinguished, sincerely and with a straight face, right?

[Already he can tell that Lance is suppressing a smug face with placid calm: a calm so telling that it's best he just acknowledge his inevitable victory. Pretending only makes Nate feel worse.

He waves a hand impatiently.]

Yeah, okay, just get it over with.
