This is long overdue, but Tranquility's post and some of the responses to it made it apparent that we needed a new summary of what's going on, especially for anyone who's arrived in only the last few months. I've put together a brief history here, specifically for the conflict between the Null and the gods, the issue of the rogue Null in the city, and the Door.

[Also hi, everyone. Lance is serious business at the moment, but it's just 'focused' serious rather than 'everything is awful' serious. Which is a nice change for him, honestly.]

Hopefully that'll kind of help a little, and feel free to ask questions or make corrections, especially if you've been here longer or know more than I do about this; it's also a pretty brief summary, so if I left out anything you think is important just say so. Remember, though, that this is supposed to be facts, not editorializing about who's telling the truth or what side to be on.

It's also been awhile since I mentioned it, so for everyone new, I'm Dr. Lance Sweets; I'm a clinical psychologist. Adjusting to being here--as well as dealing with everything that can happen in this place--can be kind of difficult, especially when you don't know anyone, so I just wanted to mention that it's always okay to call or send me a message, even if we've never met. It also doesn't have to be an emergency; you're not wasting my time, so don't worry about anything like that.

[He won't mention it but he's usually not doing anything important; it would be hard to waste his time even if he were the type to call it such a thing.]

Null attacked a location we moved to after Love revived. Were you there for that? City was split over two planets.

( She's fuzzy on all the details, because they're muddled in amongst three years of being home, but she can't exactly forget being stuck in the cave without proper food or light, with the monsters unable to be held at bay. )

I think I arrived immediately after that; I remember hearing something from Rosen about the city being split.

[But honestly Lance doesn't remember much of anything from that first month aside from conversations here and there, so he's really hazy on it.]

That was the Null? Did we know that at the time?

[Because he's a little surprised he didn't know about this, actually.]

What made the gods explain what was going on, if I'm not mixing it up.

( She's pretty sure she's not, because it was that moment of everything sliding into place. )

That would make sense.

[He's still just marveling a little that he's never seen this mentioned before, though then again it's entirely possible he missed it. Even he can't stalk everything at all times, and if he'd found out at some point in the first or even second month it was totally possible he'd forgotten or never committed it to memory with how out of it he'd been at the time.]

I'll find somewhere to add that information in; is it possibly why the gods suspected there was an informant in the city to begin with?

What I could find.

Might be good to note that the Door is something much older than the gods here, alive and dangerous. Apparently the gods can't be near it for very long, and anything else with an iota of sentience risks being driven mad or worse. Something to keep in mind before people make any plans to start excavating the Colosseum.

[She pauses. Right. Most of this isn't very public knowledge so far, is it.]

This info was given to me by Sorrow himself, and he's been pretty honest so far.

It is complicated, but the more we know the more we can make sense of it, at least. It was worse knowing pretty much nothing about the situation.

He said that the fragments themselves won't be much use on their own, so he didn't seem to have any concerns about us retrieving them. He actually said that they could help to better control the Door.

( He does, and there's no real reason for Kate to shift to private - she's been quite clear on the network so far - but she does it anyway. )

We need to do it. Might not pay off but it's the best chance we've had since I got here first time. Need to understand the thing that brought us here.

( If it means they get some sort of leverage over the gods, that they don't feel so utterly tied to the gods' whims, isn't that worth the risk? )

( Though Kate says that bitterly. She's determined to get to the Door somehow, but it makes an unfortunate amount of sense. )

Thing's showing power levels I haven't seen before where it is. ( Underground, when only the most powerful flares of ability should even be a whisper through a wall, let alone 24 feet below. She still looks, a lot, but the headaches it causes are a pain and a half. ) Not always. But enough.

( Sometimes it disappears entirely, and she can't be sure if that's reassuring, if it's a chance they could use, or something far worse. )

What are you talking about? This have anything to do with the device Alphys engineered? [Rey's pretty attentive, but she doesn't keep track of everything as much as she'd like. That'd be Nick's job.]

Better controlling the Door seems like something that would be advantageous to both the gods and us. At the very least it wouldn't make our situation any worse.

[He actually thinks it'll be a huge benefit to them all, although probably only later on down the road. The idea of not pursuing the lead they have just seems like a terrible choice.]

Yes, pretty much every month. It's usually about ten people, give or take.

[He doesn't mind the switch to private; he doesn't think this needs to be hidden from the gods or anything, and who knows if it even would be on their own network, but there are all sorts of reasons why she might not want everyone reading the post to see it.]

I agree, especially for those who can't or don't want to return to their worlds. More control over the Door, even if the gods refuse to use it until we've handled the Null issue, can only help us.

[And of course, even better if the population here can get some control over it, yes.]

Agreed. His theory is that the fragments could help open the Door both ways, be able to give it more comprehensive tasks as it's been functioning on very basic instructions all this time. The pieces could allow them to adjust those operations without the risk of drawing more fucking synthetics to us.

[The way Sorrow described it, even Rey can't say that she is willing to give up this chance. She doesn't have to trust or like Name to figure that out.]

Tranquility seemed at least receptive to my suggestions. Sorrow said he has no problem with us retrieving the fragments, and Hope would want to make sure we are safe if we do go out there, so that's at least two of them that's sort of on our side.

No worries. Sorrow is the one who knows the most about the Door, so it seemed like he was the best source to double-check with after that synthetic was talking about it.

[Plus he more or less seems to trust Rey, so that helps.]
