hadriel | Video One: The Play's the Thing (backdated to August 12th)

[the video opens on a young woman sitting sideways on a large, overstuffed armchair. legs crossed and slung over one arm, head resting on the other. she's got an anticipatory smile on her face, like someone who has a secret]

First thing is, I don't know most of you and most of you don't know me, so Alice? This is Hadriel. Hadriel? This is Alice. Moving on.

Okay, I think we're all in agreement that the entertainment options around here? Suck. [she waves a hand] With the exception of the Speakeasy because who doesn't love booze? But anyway, entertainment!

We have no TVs. No movies. No internet. Not even books. [she rolls her eyes to show what she thinks about that option] But there's one thing we do have and that's people.

And what can you do with people, I can hear you all asking. And the answer to that is plays. Acting! And I even have an idea for the play: the history of Hadriel. 'Cause not all of us have been here five million years.

First act can be a drama, the story of when it was just you guys, Fear and Hope. Second act is a comedy, the weird shit that happened when the rest of the gods came back. Third act? The Null attack. Which will be a musical. And you can't talk me out of that one, so don't even bother trying.

So I'm looking for volunteers! Actors, stagehands, costumers, set painters, shit like that. So fucking volunteer. And those of you going out to sea, don't worry. It's gonna take some time to get things organized, so you can get in on this, too.

[she snaps her fingers] I was on that planet for all of like two days before we were moved here. It sucked.

[Moving to the desert from the caves had meant a lot of sunburns, even though Jo was careful. It didn't make it feel nice.]

The GPS didn't help. We didn't know how to get where we wanted. [Jo's tone remains serious. She's had it happen twice at this point. Neither time was it comedy gold.]

[she waves a hand idly]

Yeah, but then it's like the journey, not the destination, and the friends you make along the way.

[Jo shakes her head, in a little bit of disbelief.]

That doesn't make any sense.

[sounds completely unconcerned about her comment] Of course it does. When you're going somewhere specific, you don't bother to notice the little things along the way. When you're wandering, you do.

There's a difference between wandering and being so lost you can't even tell where you came from.

[It was awful.]

[flings herself back against the chair and groans dramatically]

Are you determined to suck the fun out of everything?

[Drama queen.]

[she rolls back over on her side and props her head up again]

Then here's a free tip: don't go to the play. Pretend that it's not even happening. You'll be a lot happier that way, assuming you can be happy.

[That's exactly what Jo had been planning, but now that she's been told to stay away, it's the last thing she's going to do.]

It's kind of rude to tell someone to stay away.

[she points]

And it's also kinda rude to go to something, planning on shitting all over it.

I didn't want to go until you told me not to. [So, there.]

You're sure it's going to be so awful I'll hate it?

[she rolls her eyes] Then go back to not wanting to go. Easy.

No, I'm sure that you're gonna hate it because you're no fun at all and this is supposed to be about having a little fun.

I'm a lot of fun. I just don't like doing it like this.

[she points at her again] Yeah, I'm calling bullshit on the you being a lot of fun thing.

I'm not going to apologize for not meeting your big city standards of fun.

[she falls back against the chair again]

Fuck me, is that what this is all about?

[Jo almost looks offended.]

No.

Hey, you're the one who started it with the whole "big city standards of fun" thing. Don't blame me for calling you out on it.

[Jo looks away to hide a quick roll of her eyes.]

The attitude is the problem. It doesn't matter where you're from.

[she doesn't bother to hide rolling her eyes] My attitude is great. I'm getting advice from locals, I'm not using the names of anyone here. You're the one who came in to crap all over everything.

I came to ask a question. [It went downhill from there.]

[she shrugs against the arm of the chair]
