[It's been a while since Alphys was on the network just on her own- she doesn't tend to get on video in front of a bunch of people except for emergency situations (like when the Null flooded the city last year). But now the feed starts with her hands pressed over the camera as she arranges her phone, pulling back after a few seconds to show her more in frame. Seems she was still setting up the recording. She's sitting at her desk in the Lab, the chalkboard behind her blank, giving a little wave.]

So uh, h-hey there, Hadriel! This is Alphys. Or well, I'm Alphys. Dr. Alphys, but just Alphys is fine, uh--

[She pulls at some papers on her desk to try and make herself look busy. Why is doing announcements so hard?]

Anyway! So some of you might, uh, know me in that I run the lab here. Kind of. I help run it with a lot of people! But uh, m-my specialty is actually in mechanical engineering, and uh, more specifically robotics. And uh, I've noticed recently there are actually a lot of robots here? All of a sudden?

[She waves her hands in front of her, palms out from her chest.]

Not that it's a bad thing! And I, uh, totally want to help- I've done repairs on plenty of robots here before and I have some, uh, s-spare parts and stuff like that, but... I was wondering if anyone else has experience in, uh, that sort of thing? I used to know a couple of people, but I think, uh... just about everyone's gone home.

[Alphys looks down for just a moment, her head spines wilting, before she perks back up with her trademarked lopsided smile.]

So uh! If anyone knows anything or just wants to lend a hand or is a new robot and needs something just let me know!! I'm down at the lab! So! Yeah! Bye!!!

[And then there's a few more seconds of her grabbing her phone and just kind of squeezing it until the feed cuts. Might've been nice to know where the lab is, but. She tried.]

O-- Oh! Ohmygosh.

[Okay maybe this is more than she thought,,,]

I, uh-- well, if you know technology at all, t-that might work! I've, uh, never even heard of that stuff and I've been helping. Though sometimes the tech here can be, uhm, v-very different.

[she smiles warmly]

I know some technology? I'm from the 30th century, so probably your tech and my tech won't be the same. I'm a fast learner, though, and I'd like to help you out.

Ohmygosh yeah, that's uh. Far ahead.

[But y'know, they need that variety.]

It's okay, though! I mean, the more we know... I don't really know the worlds that, uhm, m-most of them come from. I just sort of try to figure it out. So, uh, I'm sure we can get something together!

Yeah, it is a little. I've seen phones like these in museums.

[a wide spectrum of experience and knowledge should be helpful?]

You must be very good to have been able to take care of problems all by yourself before. And I'm sure we can, too.

[She blushes, ducking her head.]

I, I don't know about very good or anything, I just-- t-they needed help, you know? I couldn't just say no. And there have been... well... difficulties.

[Let's nnnnot talk about that month with Rey! Huh!]

Of course you couldn't say no. Not when someone's in need.

[At that, she smiles.]

Okay! I'll do my best to, uhm, point you in the right direction. Have you gotten to see the Lab yet? Since you've, uhm, been here?

[she smiles warmly back]

Thank you! And no, I haven't been. I can come over right now if you're there?

Oh! Yeah, I'm h-here. We're by the Coliseum, in those shops on that island, uh-- near the Clinic! If that helps.

[She's gonna have to tidy up like, real quick. It's fine.]

[she smiles warmly]

It does help! I'll fly right on over.

[And she'll set off just making sure the Lab doesn't look like a total disaster area. She's got some stuff on her desk that just gets shoved into a drawer- like one of the Door shards, and some Null pieces. Probably not good for someone's first time in here. But she'll be waiting for when the other girl arrives.]

[Tinya flies over to the Lab. it's not far as she lives in one of the Spires on the same island the Lab is located on. she's wearing her Legion uniform and is smiling brightly when she enters the lab and sees Alphys]

Hello! It's good to meet you in person.

[She squeaks in surprise when Tinya comes in, her eyes going wide.]

Ohmygosh a-are you a superhero??

[Only superheroes have capes, it's basically science. And also: oh my goddddd that looks amazing.

So much for being professional about this.]

[Tinya smiles brightly and nods]

I am! Codename Apparition of the Legion of Super-Heroes. But most people call me Tinya.

[she fought hard to keep her cape, along with the gold and garnet brooch at her throat. and she's be so flattered if she knew!

[Her eyes are practically sparkling irl at this point.]

Ohhhhmygodddd that's amazing! Do you have magic powers? Like I know you have an outfit but do you have a transformation sequence or a theme song are you a magical girl???

[she grins, delighted by her enthusiasm]

It's not magic, it's science. I'm from a planet in perfect orbital and rotational sync with Earth, only it's in another dimension. I can "phase," or become intangible. See?

[she phases and walks so she's standing in the middle of a table, her upper body above the table and her lower beneath]

[She just looks so excited, tapping her clawed hands together as she watches the display.]

I mean, it-- it c-could be both! I mean, I'm magic but I'm also a scientist, there's, I mean, I study magic a lot! And all that still works here?

[d'awww, her reaction is so cute!]

I've never heard of magic and science working together! Where I'm from, magic died out in the 28th century. And yes, I can still phase here! I was so relieved, I can't even tell you.

[She loves this sort of thing okay!! This is all of the things that make her up! It's great!]

Magic-- died out? That's-- okay, t-that's. Wow. That's a lot. But uh, no, I'm made of magic, but I study science and the science of well, uhm, magic! Like how it interacts with the universe and all that. Just because magic moves differently from science doesn't mean it doesn't have rules.

[she's happy to provide as much information as she can!]

Mm-hmm. There was a master sorcerer called Mordru the Merciless. He subjugated a bunch of different star systems until they all banded together to defeat him and seal him away. But what you study sounds really interesting! I'd never thought about magic having rules, I always assumed that magic meant you could do whatever you wanted.

[Oh, so is she.]

Oh, wow. That sounds like, uhm, human magic then. Not like monster magic. Not that human magic is bad, it's just-- d-different. But it has to have rules, it's sort of like, uhm...

[She rolls her hands over one another, twisting her wrists as she tries to explain.]

It's sort of like, if science explains the structure of the universe, magic is what fills it and changes it. It sort of fills in the, uh, rest of it.

I never knew there was a difference before. Of course, nobody's considered a monster where I'm from. There are humanoids and nonhumaniods, but most people don't discriminate.

[emphasis on "most"]

I know two people who I wish could hear that. One of them would be fascinated and want to learn all he could about it and the other would probably have an aneurysm.

Oh, it's not discriminatory! Monster is the t-technical name for our species. I think it's, uhm, humans who decided it was more of a... bad word.

[So... maybe that's why it's implied as an insult or something terrible from them. But she is a monster! And she doesn't want to lose that.]

A lot of people here have a hard time with, uhm, how magic works. Or at least how I've observed magic works. I, uhm, I d-don't blame them. Worlds are really different, so it's-- you know! Everyone has seen different things.

Oh, it's not? Then, wow, I'm sorry. And humans can make any word into a bad word.

[humans can turn anything into an insult. she'd know, she's spent a lot of time around humans in her mother's United Planets negotiations]

Well, now I have to ask, how have you seen magic work? I've never seen it at all, so I'm really curious.

[That's just kind of how humans are, tbh. But thankfully the magic talk is a draw away from all that.]

All kinds of ways! Monster magic involves mostly bullet patterns or signature moves, like- l-like how skeletons make bone bullets or Undyne's cool energy spears. And then there's colored magic, like how some will only interact when you're moving or some can hold you still or-- there's a lot of kinds. And that's just the stuff from my world, I've seen SO many other cool ones w-while I'm here. Like Lup's fireballs or Rosie's ice ki. It's amazing.
