[video] as sun tzu once said, light 'em up
There are a bunch of new people around, so...hey, I'm Nate.
[ It's been a while since he posted to the network, but things are starting to get sticky - and not even in the comparatively fun, sweaty jungle way - around these parts and tension feels like it's ramping higher. Crackling in the air. It makes the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He's not in the city, as evidenced by the dense, green foliage at his back. His sketchbook is out, open, but he's talking with both his hands. ]
I realize we're kind of running the gauntlet right now in terms of what's being thrown at us, and we're basically getting ready for an inevitable showdown, and there are already a lot of efforts being made toward preparing.
[ Sonya - a woman he doesn't know - was proposing escape routes and manageable cover strategies for civilian types. It's a good idea to have those routes mapped sooner rather than later. ]
But I've spent a lot of time since we got here getting to know this landscape, the topography. What I'm looking for are people with actual combat experience, whether that's strategic, logistical, or something similar. Fight's gonna come to us whether we want it to or not, and weaponizing the environment is one of the best chances we have at mitigating the risks. Guerrilla warfare isn't pretty, but we have the resources for it.
[ For a moment he looks distracted, thinking of something, writing it down and talking over the act as he does so. ]
So just, um. Call in if you've got the know-how. Thanks.

You and John.
[ God, he's tired. He shouldn't be this tired. He's had a whole year in Riverview, a relaxing one when compared to home. Another six in Hadriel, he realizes suddenly. Another six of living with the oppression of a situation that hits so close to home. Another six, filled with the victims of Null experiments and the influence of gods he barely understood, wringing people out emotionally every chance they got, dragging people into the danger zone so they could survive themselves. ]
Son of a bitch.
[ The tiredness doesn't disappear, not by any means, but something hot and angry rises up to at least push it back toward the dark. ]
Okay. All right. I'm good.
[ He's fine. He'll be fine. And maybe when this is all over... maybe he'll get to go home knowing sometimes these things work out. Maybe.
Maybe. ]

You sure?
[ Even Nate can't suspend his disbelief for a claim so utterly lacking in its persuasion. ]
I'm not running on hope, Poe. I think at this point the only fuel we have in the tank is defiance, and that's gotta be enough.
no subject
He can get behind that. ]
I'm sure. [ It sounds steadier this time.
He's trying. He is. The anger is still there, and he clings to it.
Live to shove one foot up the enemy's ass and save the other to kick the gods in the face. Poe knows which force he hates more, but it's a near thing at this point. He knows which one needs his primary attention, though, and maybe that's the more important thing.
A soft exhalation. ] Let's fuck 'em up.

That's the spirit.
[ Better than nothing, and better to channel anger into something more constructive. Christ knows Nate has done it more times than he can count.
He isn't good at pep talks. Despite this he's been unwillingly conscripted to do so these days, through no one's fault but his own - it seems like everyone in a mile radius has problems, and he's apparently become the receptacle for them. Maybe it's because he's seen so much of himself in the concerns that are raised. Maybe it's experience, that he's been there before and somehow come out the other side still kicking.
He tries. ]
None of this defeatist, kamikaze shit, okay? You're a member of a rebellion and you're needed, so act like it.
no subject
Yeah. Yeah. And--
[ Wait. ]
Kamikaze shit.
[ He's having one of those moments you have sometimes Nate, just. Just hold on, he'll get to the point. ]
Aerial defenses. Do we have anything remotely like aerial defenses? How did they come at you before?

[ Nate doesn't even need to process further explanation. He picks up on the tone and, knowing Poe's profession, the intent behind the question. ]
They have drop ships. Nothing armed, more like supply chains. Transports. They carry troops but don't have any kind of weapons system that I remember.
[ In fairness, Nate was a little preoccupied with not having his face burned off by the Null lasers. ]
Are you thinking sabotage or commandeering?

[ He hums thoughtfully, the lead feeling around his heart lightening a little. He knows that won't last forever--he knows the heaviness will slink back in when he's not planning, not doing something. But if he can keep it at bay for a little while and be useful in the process, well. That's something. ]
We'd need a way to get on board, a subtle way, if we're going for theft instead of explosions. Even though I am a fan of explosions.

[ Or incentive to stop. While the Null don't have the emotional range to care about losses, they do have the sharp practicality to understand the statistics and percentages of risk and success. ]
I don't know that we have the resources to hack any ship we can board, but lucky for you I can read their codes. Identify where they're keeping stuff, what we can get our hands on.

[ Stating the facts, because he's historically worked well under tremendous pressure. ]
Besides, you owe me an invite.
