[video] as sun tzu once said, light 'em up
There are a bunch of new people around, so...hey, I'm Nate.
[ It's been a while since he posted to the network, but things are starting to get sticky - and not even in the comparatively fun, sweaty jungle way - around these parts and tension feels like it's ramping higher. Crackling in the air. It makes the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He's not in the city, as evidenced by the dense, green foliage at his back. His sketchbook is out, open, but he's talking with both his hands. ]
I realize we're kind of running the gauntlet right now in terms of what's being thrown at us, and we're basically getting ready for an inevitable showdown, and there are already a lot of efforts being made toward preparing.
[ Sonya - a woman he doesn't know - was proposing escape routes and manageable cover strategies for civilian types. It's a good idea to have those routes mapped sooner rather than later. ]
But I've spent a lot of time since we got here getting to know this landscape, the topography. What I'm looking for are people with actual combat experience, whether that's strategic, logistical, or something similar. Fight's gonna come to us whether we want it to or not, and weaponizing the environment is one of the best chances we have at mitigating the risks. Guerrilla warfare isn't pretty, but we have the resources for it.
[ For a moment he looks distracted, thinking of something, writing it down and talking over the act as he does so. ]
So just, um. Call in if you've got the know-how. Thanks.

Yeah, well, here's hoping.
[ But more importantly- ]
Could use you in the city center where you've got a better view of what's going on. [ Nate attaches a file. ] If they advance too far and we can't drive them back off the cliffs to the west, I'm think we might need to destroy the bridges over the river and maintain the east side of the city.

He studies the map with a serious expression on his face.]
Is there a secondary exit to the city if we cut ourselves off like that? Not that I'm opposed to a final suicidal attack if our backs are pressed against the wall, but it's not my first choice either.

[ Bad news on top of bad news. ]
We don't have boats or we could use the river as an escape route, and we don't have any advantage outside of using higher ground against them. They're not known for dexterity on rough terrain, and I hate to call this a last stand, but...that's kind of what this is. I know you weren't here the last time they attacked, but they leveled the city.

[He sounds almost pleased at the thought of one last great and glorious battle to fight and kill in.]
Cheer up. If you die, maybe you'll go to Valhalla or FΓ³lkvangr with me.
[The only bummer is that he knows he likely won't see anyone else he has grown to care about in the city like Alfred again if that's the case. They've got two completely different religious outlooks and the English king will go to Heaven instead.]

[ That's a prerequisite for Valhalla, right? Killing people in absolutely insane circumstances? With piercing clarity Nate suddenly recalls the time his bullshit got a team of mercenaries sucked out of a plane after he set it on fire. He survived, but Nate chalks it up to luck.
More belatedly he realizes he just admitted to multiple homicides, but he's probably in the least judgmental company for that. ]
I think we're just gonna have to kick as many asses as possible and see where that gets us.

[He says this very solemnly. Getting to the Norse afterlife was no joke and Ivar feels it his duty to instruct people on the best way to get there.
There's a fierce, sharp grin at Nate's words.]
We shall. I intend to cause as much death as possible and let fate determine the rest.

[ If they're going somewhere after this nightmare, it might as well be an ancient hall of feasting and fighting. Better than darkness, and he feels like the Christian Heaven leaves something to be desired for people like Ivar. ]
Stay in touch with your little- the phone, communicator thing, okay? Things will get pretty hairy during the battle.

[He sounds positively delighted by it all and why shouldn't he be? Ivar's going to warrior heaven if he dies, so there's no possible downsides to this at all.]
