Oh, also, my iPhone was up and working for a bit thanks to Pell, and I managed to get some music off it. I'll share on the condition no one makes fun of my taste.

[The last comment is a joke--he's really not going to be too hurt by jabs about his choice in music--but the offer is serious, and attached is a download of the music he's copied off so far. It's kind of a slow process, so there's still more on the phone that he can transfer later.]

Yeah, this place is uh... Full of challenges.

Seriously. Has anyone told you about uh, the kind of events that have happened here before? You're a pretty new arrival, right?

Giant eyeballs were mentioned and, unfortunately, that was about it.

[It takes several seconds before recognition shows in his eyes.]

Oh, right, one of the types of monsters. Yeah, there's those and a whole bunch of others, but uh... The events are things that the gods cause to happen whenever they want us to feel more of whatever specific emotion they need.

Aren't there only three or so gods? How often do they need to make us feel hopeful or what have you?

There's uh, five now: Hope, Fear, Rage, Delight, and Sorrow. And I don't know, exactly, but since there's more of them I think they're all getting less power unless they do combined events.

[Which are... Interesting, to say the least.]

But usually at least one of two of them do something per month.

Combined events? Someone feeling Hope and Rage?

More like Fear and Rage, but yeah. And then there was the dream thing where they all go into it and kind of alternated, except Sorrow since he wasn't around yet, and I guess Hope, Fear, and Rage all benefited from another event way early on too.

That sounds... [ like a clusterfuck ] ...truly confusing. To go from Fear to Rage, to have your emotions toyed with by the gods? One might end up with whiplash.

Yeah, though I think it's more like... They were situations that made you kind of feel everything. There was um... One event where half the people in the city were buried alive, and the other half had three days to find them all. Hope gave coordinates for where to look, but not who was were.

[And so feeling all three emotions of the gods who were present at the time--Fear, Hope, and Rage--had been pretty natural.]

Are all events so morbid?

[Yeah it kind of sucked.]

When Fear and Rage are involved, usually yeah. But Hope and Delight have had some nicer ones; when Delight was resurrected she threw like, this giant party. It got super annoying after awhile but it was still way better than the bad events.

[Some trouble sleeping and a headache were way better than being buried alive or turning into a monster or having people in your dreams, for sure.]

A city-wide party certainly sounds...exciting. [ his tone of voice implies it will not be exciting at all. ]

Don't sound too excited there.

[But he says it with a grin.]

I'm brimming at the scenes with excitement. [ and sarcasm. ]

I can feel it radiating from you, even through the screen.

[His own tone is perfectly dry, which makes it really clear he's also sarcastic.]

It uh, definitely got pretty old pretty fast.

[Despite having attended a ridiculous amount of parties in high school and college, Chris is not actually the party type himself either.]
