Much as I would have preferred not to be pulled unceremoniously from my own world, it has occurred to me that this is a rare opportunity to learn about worlds I was previously unaware of.

[In other words, this is her polite way of saying "I'm bored, entertain me".]

How many are from worlds were magic exists? How many are from worlds where the technology is highly advanced?

[She's more interested in the magic portion, really, but she is curious about people's answers regardless.]

What is the government structure like in your world?

Inquiring minds want to know. Or this one does, at least.

[Well, that's...considerably less detailed. But still, Ikaruga can have a pleasant chat.]

Are there laws that govern the use of magic in your world?

[ Oh. Well. At least he can be some help here. ]

It's limited.

Mostly to someone in the royal line, passed down through lineage. There's an option to pass on magic to someone else. Like a guard or soldier.

But they're essentially borrowing it.

Oh, that's quite a difference from magic in my world. So only the royal family is born with magic?

Pretty much.

Luna made a good point about how it's contained and used. It's pretty malleable and versatile to those who can use it. Can be put in a bottle, mixed with other elements. Give it a high enough potency, and it's more powerful than most weapons.

In my world, magic comes from particles called ethernano. It's in every living thing and the planet itself, although only a smaller percentage of people is actually able to harness it. Mages usually manifest their abilities in childhood while emotionally distressed.

Sounds kind of... Devastating, actually. I can't imagine being a kid discovering powers by accidentally lighting everything on fire. Or something.

How do you cast?

Fortunately, children's magic is weak at first, so the property damage is minimal. Basic control is fairly easily achieved, too.

[A pause.]

It varies greatly, mage by mage. Most of mine is wielded through my sword. Or a bladed weapon if my sword is unavailable.

That's a relief.

[ He sounds genuinely interested. ]

It's close to what we've got, save for it not being limited to a royal line. Sounds like it might make room for that kind of power falling in the wrong hands if so many have a chance to have it.

Ah, but other forms of power can fall into the wrong hands too. Wealth, information, social influence...

[Magic certainly helped a person become dangerous, but there were other routes.]

The magic council has all four, and their fair share of corruption.

[ Noctis laughs. Scoffing, even. ]

[ Don't need to tell him about abuse of power. He could go on for days. ]

Not sure how relieving or disturbing it is to know that kind of crap is universal.

It gives us all something to commiserate over drinks, does it not? We might as well see the positive side to an unfortunate truth.

Guess you're right.

[ He still sounds interested; amused, even. ]

Not much of a drinker, but as of the last week or so? My mind's changing.

[ A pause. ]
