[There's something distinctly different about Fear when he turns the video on this time. He seems even less human than normal, not breathing, not blinking, as if he's forgotten how to manipulate his form so that it actually appears lifelike.

He manages to move his mouth as he speaks, but the motion doesn't quite sync up with the words echoed in through the mic.]

...so I've finally failed.

[His eyes are unfocused, but he looks downward, contemplative.]

I only got half the city out. It won't be enough- we can't start over, not without Hope. So it ends here, I suppose.

[He takes in his first breath since beginning the recording, letting it out in a long sigh.]

I'm sorry.

[He growls it out like a wounded animal.]

I tried to fix it and look where it got us. I've got nothing left.

We'll get you more power and try again. There's still time - they can't be here yet, and we've got the caves.

I'm not giving up now.

It takes three months to move it once. You think we'll gather- even half that, in the time we have left?

We won't gather anything at all if you give up now. We've still got people here - we'll just scare them extra. Besides, it's only half the city. Are you saying you're too weak to even do that?

[He actually manages a bit of a weak laugh at that.]

We've been clawing to life this whole time, as if this wasn't the inevitable end. We didn't stand a chance, Hope- don't you realize that yet?

They almost killed us all - you and I were the only ones left. Since then, we've gotten everyone back. Isn't that an obvious enough sign that we've got a chance? I refuse to lay down and die, and I'm not letting you do it either.

Shut up.

[Frustrated.]

I knew we'd be reviving them into death again- I knew we would, but you wouldn't listen. You're so stubborn and so stupid, like you believe that we can keep surviving if we try hard enough but we can't. We just can't, and we're going to die again, and there's nothing we can do-

[Fear cuts himself off midsentence and his anger leaves him as quickly as it had come. There's a quiet moment of reflection there, and then he shakes his head and speaks, his tone a little softer than before.]

...I know you want to believe. I just don't see it.

You've never tried to see things from my perspective anyway - you give up too fast, you always just want to run. So let's run, at least that's better than waiting to die.

[Hope is angry still.]

You don't need to see it my way, you just need to listen to me. We can get out of this. We'll get power from the ones on this side, Rage and Delight can protect us until then. I'll give you whatever power I can. I'm not going to let you die, I'm not going to let any of us die again.

Your perspective is naive.

[It's without the usual barbs though, and Fear is relenting, just a little.]

...but if I get the power, I'll use it. I can't spare anything to scare them- you'll need to work with me.

Of course I'll work with you, don't be stupid.

[His tone is sharp, but he looks relieved.]

I'll do everything that I can. There are things we can do, I think, and maybe some of them will help.

We can try.

[But he's not exactly hopeful about their chances.]

It depends on how long it takes them to find us. I won't even be able to attempt another movement for at least a few days.

We've got the caves. Without Confusion, they won't be as effective, but they're something. We've got Rage and Delight, and some of the people on this side of the city can fight. We'll hold out.

[He is determinedly hopeful.]

We'll get you the power.

Um. I guess... you're really scared that your friends are going to die again. And that is scary; I'm scared, too.

I tried. I used most of what I had to move just that much. Everyone is asking me for things that aren't possible with what I have now.

[Well see, that's the best part! And it's also the part that has them smiling, no matter how small it is.]

But for real, man. We all make mistakes. I get you, trust me. You just gotta let us help you out. You guys get your strength from our feelings, right?

So, if you look at it that way, we failed you.

Sorrow wants you and the others with you to keep the city safe. If we can make it out of this, we need a home to return to.

You did. But we'd been planning around that, and that plan fell through.

[Not easy from his side of the city, but he catches some of the conversation, and more importantly, he catches Frisk's contribution. The words are torn through with static, which don't make the grinning skull any easier to look at, for some.

But the sentiment's sincere.]

We're not giving up over here.

So don't give up wherever you are, okay?

[That's not quite the sentiment he was expecting and Fear is quiet for a moment in the wake of it, his mouth pressed tight in a thin line.

Finally, he relents, if just a little.]

...okay.

[Surprisingly, unexpectedly sincere - both from Sans, and from Fear. Nigh-omnipotent beings used to achieving what they want, when they want it...no wonder they ain't takin' failure lightly. They ain't used to it.

His words are steady, even with his face sliced through with static.]

No harm in trying.

I'll keep that in mind.
