[So, it's been about a day. It felt like a lot longer, especially during the night, and by now he's not just scared but incredibly bored. Sleeping isn't really a thing that's an option for lots of reasons, so he's had a lot of time to both think and reread a lot of conversations on the network; there's something that stood out to him in that time, and it lead to this post.]

Okay, so a lot of people are here without any of their friends from home, and this whole thing going on is a pretty bad time to be on your own.

[He can't imagine what it would be like being in this situation while thinking there's no one looking for and caring about you specifically. It isn't just the actual rescue that's the issue, though--especially since who gets found when is pretty unpredictable--it's that there might be people that don't have anyone to reach out to. There might be people who are totally alone in this.

So I was thinking that anyone who doesn't have anyone to talk to can just join in conversation here? People who do already have friends to talk to can too. Meeting new people is at least distracting even if everyone's probably not feeling all that friendly.

I guess just talk about whatever. What's it like back in whatever world you're from, any cool skills (if they involve getting out of being buried that's a plus,) anyone in college before they ended up here? Whatever topic is going to be better than nothing.

I mean I dunno about you guys but I definitely don't have anything better to be doing.

Well, not a lot a lot? Like, the news never reports on it or anything.

But it depends on where you live, really.

I grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, though, where everyone teaches their kids not to give their full names first, even if they don't really believe in the supernatural.

I guess that's not so for where you come from?

Yeah, no. I mean I've heard of the whole superstition about names but it was always a fantasy novel sort of thing.

[Though he wouldn't be surprised if it was a custom in New Orleans; he actually wouldn't be too surprised if there's a real risk of someone casting a spell on you in his world in general, now. Not after finding out there are real monsters there.]

It's cool to hear from someone who's from a place I actually recognize, though. I live in LA.

Haha, I've been to LA more than a few times! It's a cool place.

I travel a lot for my job, so I've been almost all over the world by now. :3

Oh yeah? What's your job?

Depends. When I'm traveling, mostly glorified courier. When I'm not, I'm the personal assistant to a prominent businesswoman in Japan.

[Which is a very nice way of saying he's the personal assistant of the leader of Japan's third-largest yakuza, her personal errand-runner, bully-boy, blackmailer, spy, and occasionally assassin. Amos grins a little, because he's always liked Kameko.]

I like the travel, I get to see a lot of people. What about you?

That sounds really awesome. Do you get to go to Japan?

[He thinks nothing of it; sounds legit to him okay.]

I'm pretty boring on the job or whatever front; I'm a college student.

[Or was, anyway. If he ever gets out of this place he's not sure if he'll be able to just go back to school like before, but that's not a problem to worry about right now.]

Yup. When I'm not travelling, I stay in Japan, mostly in Kyoto.

College? Pretty neat. I barely finished high-school, myself. What were you majoring in?

Cool, do you like it there? I have a friend who's family is from Japan but I don't know if she's ever been there herself.

I was going for computer science.

I like it a lot! But sometimes it does get too busy for me. It's a big city.

I'll always like New Orleans better, but hey, I grew up there.

Computer Science? So you're a smart person, then! :D We need more brains around here.

Yeah, sounds like it could get to be too much if you're not like a big city person.

[Chris really likes living in the city, even more so now that his last vacation into the wilderness nearly ended in horrific death. He'll just stay in his nice hometown full of people and working cellphones and--hopefully--no ancient monster spirits, thanks.]

Yeah. It seems like there's a lot of smart people here in general.

[Or at least people with a wide range of skills and knowledge. He's met very few people here that seem a little slow on the uptake.]

Yup! But I'm not one of them. Never been a very brainy sort.

[It's not a lie: he's never been very academically brilliant. Clever and good with languages, but not exactly traditionally smart.]

Well there's lots of kinds of smart, right?

I guess? Never thought about it that way.

My grandmother - who raised me - was always so disappointed I wasn't a straight-A student, so I guess I just kinda think about smarts as being good in school and with computers and science stuff.

Yeah, definitely. Like being smart is pretty much just about learning and understanding things, and figuring stuff out, right? There's a whole lot of things you can be smart about that won't show up on your grades.
