i'm aware i asked this a few months ago, but now i actually have materials to get started, so i'm asking again:
does anyone know how to sew? hand stitching, specifically. i now have really nice cotton (thank you, delight!!!) that we can make clothes with
right now, we have a bolt of white cotton fabric. if you want a different color, tell delight a happy memory, and she'll give us more fabric. but don't, like, dogpile her or anything. be nice, for fuck's sake
[Emily, who are you to talk about being nice...................]
if you're interested in sewing, meet me here: [and she attaches an image of a map with one of the shops circled]

[Comes with the territory of having to alter his own clothes for years.]

[Looks like Hope knows what he's doing after all. Kind of.]
[text] → [action]
[Despite the fact he still wants to correct her on it's a tabard and vestment, not a robe and he's already preparing himself to regret this decision, he does show up at the spot marked on the map. He even managed to procure his own needles, thread, scissors and chalk.]

But whatever, it's his life.
Emily looks up from her sketch when he walks in, then nods to where the fabric is.]
Go for it. Let me know when you're ready so I can learn what you know.
no subject
Only one problem.]
Well, we could start right now, in that case. I cannot wear white, so perhaps I could make something for you instead.
no subject
[Don't clerics wear white by default? ...like she knows anything about religion, though.]
no subject
It's complicated.
[Yes, because that explains a lot and will surely sate her questions. That's why he moves onto the next suggestion immediately.]
Perhaps I could make a bag for you, or a cloak. Or anything I could draft up, really. It's not hard, once you get the basics down.
no subject
Show me how to make a bag.
[It sounds a lot less like a command and more like there's a 'please' somewhere in there. Right now, with such nice fabric at her disposal, it's hard to be in too bossy a mood.]
no subject
[He beelines for the fabric, taking it in hand to study the quality.]
This is where I'd normally suggest taking to paper your idea for a bag, or tunic, or whatever garment you'd be drafting, but as this is a demonstration, we'll just go straight for the throat, shall we?
[He pulls the fabric across a bare countertop.]
Now, what do you know about sewing? Any part of it?
no subject
What I know, I know in theory. So like, I know about different kinds of fabrics, cuts, needles, garment construction. Stuff like that. And I can hem pants and all of that.
[She must sound like such an idiot.]
I learn fast, though.

[Okay, so not like hemming, but from the sound of it, she already knows plenty. Setting his own bag aside, Carlisle gets his piece of chalk and taps it against his free hand -- the white chalk dusts up some powder from seemingly nowhere in his palm, and turns a light blue. Satisfied he'll now be able to see the lines on white, he sketches two tall rectangles onto the fabric. Down the side of the fabric he goes for a long strip: that'll be the strap.]
There. Nothing magnificent, but it'll be easy to sew and of practical use when finished. Personally, I'd use sturdier fabric for the outside, but I suppose beggars can't be choosers.
no subject
[And sure, sure, he can talk all he wants about hemming versus sewing, but right now, Emily has just one question.]
What did you just do to that chalk?
no subject
Well, white wasn't going to show up on white, now was it?
no subject
[Look man if you can dye stuff with magic, she needs to know.]
no subject
[That was a lot more words than he probably needed for that answer.]
no subject
People where I'm from talk about magic and spells and all of that, but you can never really be sure it's real. It's pretty cool that it's actually real where you're from.
[She's sure that if she were from a world like his, she'd want to learn. Hell, she would learn, and she'd be great at it.]
no subject
no subject
And then, fuck it, she just goes for it.] Can you teach me magic?
no subject
I... honestly don't know?
[He says that as though the thought itself is incredulous.]
I don't know if the magical energy I know to manipulate is intrinsic to my world or not. Learning to harness it is usually started at a young age, but I don't see why an adult couldn't learn glyphcrafting or alchemy.
no subject
Emily can work with that.]
You won't know until you try, so you may as well. Do you need, like, a specific time or place or something, or can you just do magic whenever you want?
Now that I kind of have an answer on this!
[He pauses for a second, thinking.]
I already know what he hard part will be: finding reagents.
no subject
[She won't get overly excited about it, in case it doesn't work, but it's still cool.]
Wait, did you find that book an alchemy here? [Can he read whatever language so many of the books in the library are in?]
no subject
[He says that with the proudest grin as he starts cutting the fabric.]
